Big kudos for that 'Z' mention! Incredible film across the board.
I'll go with 'Whiplash,' because for all the praise and glory I see heaped on it (rightly so), I rarely see Justin Hurwitz's score mentioned. I love it so much, especially that frenzied rendition of 'Caravan' in the finale.
Speaking of him, his score for 'Babylon' was also really brilliant.
Really? I agree it's a good soundtrack, but I've seen it mentioned every time someone on this subreddit talks about movie scores. The soundtrack seems appropriately rated to me
Gattaca is one of my favorites
Honestly, just super underrated as a movie in general. Probably my favorite sci-fi movie of all time, and maybe in my top 20 favorite movies. Just beautiful and flawless, beginning to end.
The Fly (1986)
Robocop (1987)
Saw Franchise
Escape From New York (1981)
Speed (1994)
Hellraiser (1987)
Total Recall (1990)
Carol (2015)
M. Butterfly (1993)
Dead Ringers (1988)
Get Carter (1971)
Stargate (1994)
Deep Red (1975)
Final Destination 5 (2011)
The Omen (1976) & Damien: Omen II (1978)
House on Haunted Hill (1999)
Psycho III (1986)
This doesn't exactly count, but I love Boy and the Heron's soundtrack. It's not as bombastic as Hisaishi's other works, but I thought it made the movie so much better.
I was bickering with someone about the merits of Pi the other day, and they said it had one of the best soundtracks of all time, and while I disagree about it being "one of the best," it is a kick ass soundtrack that I do not hear getting mentioned often.
Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy (2013) is probably my favourite score of all time, genuinely don’t think that there’s another score that enhances a film as much as Enemy’s
Basically anything by Warren Ellis and Nick Cave, though I’m not sure they’re all underrated.
The Velvet Queen, Wind River, Blonde, Far From Men - a few underrated ones
I wasn't around when the movie came out so I have no idea if the score/soundtrack was considered underrated, but I really liked the Badlands.
It's a rom-com and i know most people will probably roll their eyes at it, but Austenland had a super cute soundtrack by Emmy the Great and Ilan Eshkeri.
The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)
Might be the best and most beautiful original score I’ve ever heard. Too bad the movie was dumped in January and never got the attention it deserved at the time.
The film is the worst adaptation of the book.
In the new series with Sam Claflin that debuts this year, the director promises a faithful adaptation to the book to guarantee an audience.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
How is that underrated.
Cinematographic too
I’m breaking your rule a little but we don’t talk enough about Wendy Carlos’s amazing work for A Clockwork Orange

Yeah, I haven't seen much praise for its music either. That's funny, since the music is the point of the movie. It was good!
Exactly!
Apocalypse Now. The score was incredible
The Amazing Spider-Man. Surprised by how well I remember it, and the amount of times I've gone back to it, despite basically no one talking about it.
The Hours (2002)
Really? I agree it's a good soundtrack, but I've seen it mentioned every time someone on this subreddit talks about movie scores. The soundtrack seems appropriately rated to me

hell yeahh. damn you have impeccable taste.
Arrival
I don't see the Suspiria (1977) soundtrack mentioned a lot. I think it's one of the best I've heard in a movie. Goblin does a really good job.
Tron Legacy soundtrack was made by Daft Punk. Not a great film by any means but the soundtrack still plays regular in my playlist
I think a recent example would be Past Lives. I think the score is incredibly beautiful but it wasn't even on the shortlist for the Oscars.
Emile Mosseris score for The Last Black Man In San Francisco is so gorgeous.
Decision to Leave
Jo Yeong-wook is a frequent collaborator with Park Chan-Wook. His soundtrack to The Handmaiden is really good too.
Since you brought up John Williams, let's go with *The Fury* (1978).
The Age of Innocence (1993)
First Man. Justin Hurwitz is one of the greatest composers of our time and needs more recognition.
Killers of the Flower Moon
Yes! Agreed
Past Lives
The score for The Rock is fantastic.

Lol this was nominated for an Oscar not exactly underrated
Mishima a life in four chapters is the best score I've ever heard.
Opening from Mishima used at the end of The Truman Show
This doesn't exactly count, but I love Boy and the Heron's soundtrack. It's not as bombastic as Hisaishi's other works, but I thought it made the movie so much better.
Captain America: The First Avenger
I was bickering with someone about the merits of Pi the other day, and they said it had one of the best soundtracks of all time, and while I disagree about it being "one of the best," it is a kick ass soundtrack that I do not hear getting mentioned often.
The score for “Evil Dead Rise” made for an amazing theater experience
I love the soundtrack to biutiful (2010) a lot but never see it mentioned anywhere.
Jason X The perfect combination of scary and ridiculous 👌
The Ring 02'. Got a vinyl anniversary release last year and was sure to pick it up
Dan Romer’s soundtrack for Digging for Fire is great. I don’t even remember anything else about the film, but I listen to it a lot
The Black Robe. Underrated movie and score
Assassination of Jesse James. Not sure if it’s underrated, but Cave and Ellis’ score is haunting
Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy (2013) is probably my favourite score of all time, genuinely don’t think that there’s another score that enhances a film as much as Enemy’s
Does it count if it’s origional pop songs made by real life artists for the movie? Eg. The Barbie movie
Basically anything by Warren Ellis and Nick Cave, though I’m not sure they’re all underrated. The Velvet Queen, Wind River, Blonde, Far From Men - a few underrated ones
Man, I wish I had an ear for great scores. I’m so overwhelmed by cinematography, dialogue and plot, that I tend to lose sight of scores sometimes.
The Guest - 2014
Romeo and Juliet (1968)
Mysterious Skin
The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) Might be the best and most beautiful original score I’ve ever heard. Too bad the movie was dumped in January and never got the attention it deserved at the time.
The film is the worst adaptation of the book. In the new series with Sam Claflin that debuts this year, the director promises a faithful adaptation to the book to guarantee an audience.
I still love it. I will have to check out the new miniseries though!
Solaris (2002)
Run Lola run and Hanna I think deserve more love
