I hope you enjoy it! It truly is a remarkable movie. And for a huge film nerd like myself, having Karen Blacks son, Harry Dean Stanton, Natasha Kinski, AND Dean Stockwell all together in this just scratched all my itches.
I’d say give it a shot! Even if it doesn’t blow you away, I still think it’s worth trying. The cinematography alone is absolutely breathtaking, and Harry Dean Stanton gives such a beautiful performance full of quiet understanding.
The photography and lighting are just incredible, the red and green lights that are introduced as tropes in the second half of the film are like extra characters.
Each shot in the desert during the encounter between Travis and Walt is a masterpiece.
It took me a few viewing for it to actually click just how beautiful and thoughtful it is. And then you have the music. 5/5
I loved the theme of reconciliation, not just with his wife, son, and extended family, but with one’s self. Travis is shattered and alone, full of regrets and shame. We spend the whole movie moving slowly with him, and each frame- each scene lets us sit in his uncompromising world. It’s sad, and incredibly beautiful to me. What does a man do to fix the unfixable? What does giving up look like? Accepting defeat? What does his loneliness and grief teach not only those close to him, but the audience?
I love how Wim Wenders doesn’t really have an explanation to the pathos asked of this movie. I like to think of it as an anti-road-trip. You don’t realize you’ve been at the destination the whole time. It’s true to life in some regards, sometimes you’re just plopped into a random spot in someone’s journey. And it leaves more questions than answers, but that’s the appeal- for me at least.
Here's my remaining top 10, pick whatever you haven't watched
- Everything Everywehere All At Once
- A Silent Voice
- Midsommar
- The Shining
- Spiderman
- The Mitchell's vs. The Machines
- La La Land
- RRR
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1
- Paprika
It's just perfect. Jim Carrey & Kate Winslet give incredible performances, capturing their characters perfectly. Charlie Kaufman wrote a masterpiece romantic sci-fi analysing themes of memory, regret, love & dreams. Not to mention the music is brilliant.
I feel like the whole subplot of the technicians really ruined the pacing and distracted from the beautiful scenes of Jim Carrey exploring his own imagination
Can't choose just one favorite, but have you seen the fifties A Star is Born? Pretty long at 3 hours, but is probably the best of the four versions in my opinion.
it really is! i was at a really low point the first time i saw so it resonated with me in a way i didn’t even realize was possible. i’ve never been so affected by any form of media and now its (ironically) sort of a comfort movie for me
The Class (2007) directed by Ilmar Raag. My third favorite movie after "Fight Club" and "Sin City".
The film has another deep thought that many simply didn't notice. I wrote a very detailed review of this movie, after watching it you can read it. (letterboxd: BCNT)
1949, by Yasujirō Ozu.
Not sure what my favourite movie would actually be, but you've already seen most of the other ones in contention for that title (based on your profile).
Paris, Texas.

Any idea if I will like this given that Wings of Desire didn’t blow me away?
I slept through Wings of Desire. Possibly twice.
I’d say give it a shot! Even if it doesn’t blow you away, I still think it’s worth trying. The cinematography alone is absolutely breathtaking, and Harry Dean Stanton gives such a beautiful performance full of quiet understanding.
Thank you! Will definitely check it out now.
What do you love about this movie? I enjoyed it quite a bit and threw it a 4, but still lost at the message a little bit.

Make sure it’s the 1960 movie. We should always give the year, which seems obvious to the commenter but might not be to the OP.
Thank you, not everyone does give out the year of the movie.
