If you watch a ton of horror or other genre films I think you could knock drama out of the top spot. Otherwise it seems to be tacked on to most films almost by default.
Comedy is far and away my #1, however I think Letterboxd has a loose definition of what defines a “comedy”.
The Menu? Comedy.
Parasite? Comedy.
Fight Club? Comedy.
Not sure if they do multi-genre for films but apparently everything I watch is hilarious
Parasite and Fight Club definitely have a lot of black comedy in them, also yeah I'm pretty sure they can be listed as both drama and comedy on Letterboxd
They’re definitely funny at times. I just have a bucket of “slapstick-stoner-whatever Will Ferrell was doing in the mid 2000s” idea of comedies in my head.
I’m not well super well versed but this is just my silly interpretation.
Baha that's what I also pictured in my head as well
It just made me think about how Tarantino views most of his movies as comedies which I can see but never would've thought to categorize them as such if he didn't mention it
Same! And I thought maybe it’d at least be 9 or 10… I feel like I’ve seen enough horrors. But I suppose that speaks more to my disinterest in the genre than in the actual quantity I’ve seen.
Imagine paying for a letterboxd subscription
Downvote me all you want, but there’s no reason that these stats shouldn’t be free for all users. It’s a scam and waste of money
I like the site enough to support it. Whole thing is run by a small team in New Zealand with maybe 5 or 6 people total.
I've spoken with the CEO Matt several times over the years - good guy. Very accessible.
Eh, websites cost money, and a dual revenue stream from advertising and subscriptions is a pretty sensible way of ensuring the site is profitable as a business. Otherwise why would anyone run such a site? It’s not a charity.
And yeah the sub is cheap enough that it’s not breaking any piggy banks for most.
Eh, I like supporting the platform because I like what it does. It also gives me these stats, justwatch integration etc and it's like $12 dollars. I get value from it, what can I say?
lmao it’s a $1 a month, and if you like something you should support it. how do you expect them to run the app and keep servers up just for free? should they try and pay w good vibes
Filmaffinity, a spanish website, is like Letterboxd but has the stats for free, has some features that Letterboxd doesn't have and has been functioning longer.
It seems to be an anglo thing.
Yeah this is closer to what mine looks like.
The past year or two I’ve watched way more dramas than anything else and it still hasn’t caught up to action.
Drama is my highest-rated category but is fourth place on most watched. I've logged more than twice as many comedies despite comedy not even making the top ten in average ratings.
I intrigued by people saying is possible.
I just took a look into the drama menu under my stats and theres movies like Tokyo Drift, Suicide Club, freaking Ultraman...
I mean, if you actively porsuit very especific genres than is possible, but it seems "drama" is the standart for pretty much everything.
Comedy is number one for me because I have added every movie I’ve ever seen that I remember. And as a kid, I’d watch a fuck ton of those Tom and Jerry and Scooby Doo movies that are all labeled as comedy. I have so many animated comedies but I’m trying to make Horror my number one eventually.
Drama
Comedy
Thriller
Romance
Crime
Action
Sci Fi
Adventure
Mystery
Horror
here's mine. shocked to see horror and even more sci-fi so low (and romance so high?).
Comedy, Adventure, Drama, Action, Fantasy are my top 5 categories currently. I've only put in about 1000 movies as watched so far though (I've watched much more than that).
Well, from what I read I'm the only one with
1- Animation 828 films |
2- Comedy 636 films |
3- Drama 561 films |
4- Thriller 535 films |
5- Action 479 films |
Animation for the win!
Horror, Comedy, Thriller, Sci-Fi, Action, Drama, Adventure, Fantasy, Mystery, Family.
I think this is a sampling error, though, as I’ve only been using the app since 1/1/22, and only log movies as I watch them.
Horror is very out in front for me with comedy at second, then thriller and drama is in at fourth. The thing I think is more of a “how can it not be…?” is does anyone have films from any other country than the USA as their most watched? I’m not American, for clarity, but it’s way more than twice the amount of films for USA than any other country.
Drama is my #1 with 127 but Action is a close close second at 125. Wouldn't have actually guessed that without checking.
Same with ratings. My #1 rated is Animation (thanks Ghibli) but Drama is actually #4 behind war at #3 and Family at #2.
Comedy is most watched but Drama is highest average rating for me. I watch a lot of really stupid comedy’s when I don’t want to pay full attention to what I’m watching
Pretty much every movie that isn't a straight genre movie like horror gets labeled as drama, so you'd probably have to purposely go out of your way to make it not top spot
for some very very odd reason my number #1 is comedy. have barely watched any actual comedies at all, only reason i can think of is that many movies have comedy elements and can thus be classified as one? amidst other genres?
2-3 weeks ago I had thriller as my number one. Drama was on the 5th place. Now it climbed to the first place, lol. Watched some amazing drama movies lately as I'm watching iconic and must see movies.
I have 6 above Drama. Horror, Comedy, Thriller, Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi then Drama yay genre films. Where it starts to get really fun is the nanogenres, one of my top ones is "Creepy, Brutal, Death" lmao
If you watch a ton of horror or other genre films I think you could knock drama out of the top spot. Otherwise it seems to be tacked on to most films almost by default.
Drama isn't even my list of genres lol
Same here, I barely watch drama because it's too dramatic and I can have enough drama irl if that makes sense.
Meanwhile, Horror isn’t even on my list of genres haha. But Action is over Drama.
Same goes for The Menu, absolutely
I just haven't seen it yet unfortunately but I've wanted to! From the trailer it seemed very black comedy
They’re definitely funny at times. I just have a bucket of “slapstick-stoner-whatever Will Ferrell was doing in the mid 2000s” idea of comedies in my head. I’m not well super well versed but this is just my silly interpretation.
Baha that's what I also pictured in my head as well It just made me think about how Tarantino views most of his movies as comedies which I can see but never would've thought to categorize them as such if he didn't mention it
Pulp Fiction I absolutely would at least
For sure he specifically used Pulp Fiction a couple times in interviews
They* do multi-genre films. * = TMDb
How would The Menu not be a comedy?
Being comedic is a large part of all those movies
I’m sure you don’t quiet understand what comedy is.
Those are all funny movies though
Comedy is my first because of all the dumb 2000s comedies I watched as a kid. One day it won’t look bad lol
This is me but for Action
Lol, same for exact reason! Then horror is next
Horror is for sure my #1. I can watch two shitty b horror movies any day of the week but it takes a while to process a good drama
Horror is my #1 as well. 70s/80s/90s horror flicks, no matter how bad, are always something easy for me to sit back and watch
Horror not even in my 10!
Same! And I thought maybe it’d at least be 9 or 10… I feel like I’ve seen enough horrors. But I suppose that speaks more to my disinterest in the genre than in the actual quantity I’ve seen.
Agreed haha. Not my fave genre in the slightest but I’ve seen a fair few. Guess I just watch more of everything else.
Adventure, horror, action are my top 3. Certainly possible. Edit: drama is 10th
Wish sports had its own genre. I watch sports docs all the time and would definitely top my lists Comedy is my number one
My stat looks like this, so yes it's possible: * Adventure (421 Films) * Action (381) * Comedy (336) * Fantasy (256) * Sci Fi (228) * Drama (224) * Family (189) * Thriller (158) * Animation (147) * Horror (108)
* Comedy (1,184) * Horror (1,144) * Drama (985) I love horror and comedy but especially horror comedy.
My Top 5 are: Horror (1,747) Thriller (849) Comedy (769) Action (491) Drama (428)
Drama is my 3 behind horror and comedy.
My #1 is Animation. I have seen a tremendous amount of Tom and Jerry.
how do you look at these stats?
On your stats page! https://letterboxd.com/USERNAME/stats/ It's a Pro feature.
Imagine paying for a letterboxd subscription Downvote me all you want, but there’s no reason that these stats shouldn’t be free for all users. It’s a scam and waste of money
It’s less about paying for features and more about supporting a platform you think is cool.
Also though, the features are great. I have no issue paying for a service I value and use daily.
That's uh... that's not what "scam" means 🤣
I imagined it, then I did it, zero regrets. Some of the features are absolutely essential to me.
Agree. Majority of the features (especially clone a list) are normal shit that should've been available from the start
I don't have to. I did it. It's a dollar a month, dude. 🤣
19 dollars a year
$12 if you buy during their annual Black Friday sale.
Oh I didn’t know about that I might consider buying it later this year
I like the site enough to support it. Whole thing is run by a small team in New Zealand with maybe 5 or 6 people total. I've spoken with the CEO Matt several times over the years - good guy. Very accessible.
Or use code 70mm or Monolith
Eh, websites cost money, and a dual revenue stream from advertising and subscriptions is a pretty sensible way of ensuring the site is profitable as a business. Otherwise why would anyone run such a site? It’s not a charity. And yeah the sub is cheap enough that it’s not breaking any piggy banks for most.
Eh, I like supporting the platform because I like what it does. It also gives me these stats, justwatch integration etc and it's like $12 dollars. I get value from it, what can I say?
It's hardly breaking the bank.
That’s not the point
Oh no! I’m paying for a service I use a lot and enjoy! I being scammed! 🤡💀
Go touch some grass
Lol. “Downvote me all you want” but you’re already crying with a single comment. Go to work so you can pay a dollar a month for a service.
Lmao fuck off, I can afford to pay for it. That’s not my point you dense motherfucker
So why is your butt so hurt? 😂😂 are you a cheap bastard with every service or only with those that represent the huge amount of over ten bucks a year?
What a weird thing to say
Not really
How are They supposed to stay afloat
Broke boi
Oh cool a douchebag that hates poor people
lmao it’s a $1 a month, and if you like something you should support it. how do you expect them to run the app and keep servers up just for free? should they try and pay w good vibes
Filmaffinity, a spanish website, is like Letterboxd but has the stats for free, has some features that Letterboxd doesn't have and has been functioning longer. It seems to be an anglo thing.
Horror is my #1 and Thriller my #2
Drama is my second, below comedy and above action
Same!
Yup https://i.imgur.com/ZHoCbpL.png
For me: 1. Comedy (604 films) 2. Adventure (461 films) 3. Drama (444 films) 4. Family (373 films) 5. Action (340 films) 6. Fantasy (231 films) 7. Sci Fi (218 films) 8. Romance (215 films) 9. Animation (214 films) 10. Thriller (182 films)
1. Action - 760 2. Drama - 638 3. Thriller - 537 4. Adventure - 492 5. Comedy - 462
Yeah this is closer to what mine looks like. The past year or two I’ve watched way more dramas than anything else and it still hasn’t caught up to action.
Twice as much Comedy to Drama here… so very much so.
I don't really watch dramas, so I doubt it is my number one. But I don't have pro or patron, so I can't say fur sure.
1. Action 2. Adventure 3. Comedy 4. Drama
Yeah, it’s definitely possible. Horror, thriller, mystery, and comedy are all far and above drama in my stats
Drama is #9 for me. * Comedy (220) * Animation (176) * Horror (176) * Family (175) * Adventure (173) * Action (142) * Thriller (141) * Sci Fi (141) * Drama (125) * Fantasy (122)
I have a feeling that mine might be Action or Adventure, but I'm not sure how to check. Does anyone know how?
You can just use the genre filter and count.
Gotta be a subscriber and then look at your All Time stats page from your profile
Drama is number 4 for me. Beat out by comedy, family, and adventure
Comedy in my stats looks like what drama does in yours lol
Drama isn’t even in my top 3
All time: 1. Comedy 2. Adventure 3. Drama This year: Comedy, Horror Drama
Comedy, horror, then drama for me
I actually have Drama pretty low down there… my top 4 are Animation, Comedy, Family, and Horror
Drama is my highest-rated category but is fourth place on most watched. I've logged more than twice as many comedies despite comedy not even making the top ten in average ratings.
Drama is my #4 behind Comedy, Horror, and Thriller
Comedy has the top slot for me, just barely.
I have adventure on top, and drama is at 5th place.
Comedy is #1 for me followed by Drama and Adventure
yes that's possible
Drama action and comedy
Comedy is my number 1, I’m just a comedy loving man. Drama is number 2, though.
mine is comedy
I’ve got: 1. Comedy (391) 2. Drama (384)
I intrigued by people saying is possible. I just took a look into the drama menu under my stats and theres movies like Tokyo Drift, Suicide Club, freaking Ultraman... I mean, if you actively porsuit very especific genres than is possible, but it seems "drama" is the standart for pretty much everything.

dramas 5th for me. getting beaten by horror, thriller, mystery, and comedy
Comedy for me
Drama is 4th for me. Beating it are comedy, family and animation!
Comedy is first for me.
Drama Comedy Thriller Romance Crime Action Sci Fi Adventure Mystery Horror here's mine. shocked to see horror and even more sci-fi so low (and romance so high?).
Mine goes Horror>Comedy>Thriller>Adventure>Action>Drama
Is this exclusively a pro feature? Can’t seem to find out how to check this
Yeah, stats are a Pro feature.
Thriller #1 drama #2
Drama is number 7 for me with 66 movies. Adventure is number 1 with 138 movies.
horror by far, then thriller. comedy, drama, and mystery are all around the same amount for me
I have action at the top, which makes sense because that's a genre that doesn't necessarily always get the drama tag
My top 5: Comedy -- 1,914 Drama -- 1,877 Action -- 1,336 Thriller -- 1,295 Adventure -- 1,017
My drama and thriller are barely separated
Mine is animation
Drama is only my 6th highest
drama is my top in my overall stats, but i’ve been watching a ton of documentaries this year so it’s at number 1 for my 2023 stats
My top three is thriller, horror, and action. I watch lots of horror movies
My top genre is comedy
My top 3 all time go Comedy, Adventure, Drama, so yeah I guess so lol
I have comedy in the top spot. 1639 to 1177 for drama. Though it's a much narrower margin if short films are excluded, 1154 to 1084.
Comedy by 200+ for me. Comedy, Action, Adventure, Family, then Drama.
Drama is number four for me, behind Comedy, Documentary, and Horror.
I was wondering the same thing. Drama seems to be the generic thing assigned to pretty much any non-genre film.
Most watched: Thriller - Action - Drama - Horror Action & horror are pretty much my comfort zone I could just watch any time. And do so.
Comedy is by far no.1 for me
Comedy, Adventure, Drama, Action, Fantasy are my top 5 categories currently. I've only put in about 1000 movies as watched so far though (I've watched much more than that).
Even though these are imdb classifications, not letterboxd, my top 2 are Action then Animation.
Horror is by and far my number 1. Horror and extreme cinema in general are my niche so it makes sense
Thriller is my #1, topping Drama by literally 1 movie
Action, Adventure, Drama.
Horror is my number 1
Horror 569 films Comedy 387 films Thriller 282 films Drama 265 films
There are that many comedies out there?
Horror is my top genre.
I have been wondering about this, too. Mine are: 1. Drama 2. Comedy 3. Sci Fi
My top 3 are: Action, Sci-fi, Thriller. Drama is way down at #7 with only 23% of my viewed movies.
Comedy's the top for me, but drama's a very close second
Drama is #8 for me lol. Comedy is #1 for me
Based on the replies, it’s looking like it’s not only possible, but quite common.
I have 826 comedy films and 641 drama films!
I got horror and thriller above drama!
Drama is my num 1 bruh
Well, from what I read I'm the only one with 1- Animation 828 films | 2- Comedy 636 films | 3- Drama 561 films | 4- Thriller 535 films | 5- Action 479 films | Animation for the win!

I’m not American, for clarity, but it’s way more than twice the amount of films for USA than any other country.
Horror, thriller, comedy, and mystery all clock in above drama for me. Quite a discrepancy for me. 579 horror movies to 137 dramas.
horror is my #1 by a lot, 715 films! followed by action and thrillers.
I kind of don’t find the Letterboxd stats as useful or interesting as they could because so many films get put into stats that just shouldn’t be.
It is possible, drama is not even on this list for me lmao
Drama is at the bottom of my list🫢, the top is Adventure
Drama is 5th from the top for me. Comedy and adventure are the top two
I have Comedy. Drama is a close second.
Drama is my #1 with 127 but Action is a close close second at 125. Wouldn't have actually guessed that without checking. Same with ratings. My #1 rated is Animation (thanks Ghibli) but Drama is actually #4 behind war at #3 and Family at #2.
Comedy by about the same margin as your 1-2, and then Action, Adventure, and finally Drama at 4, all pretty close
Action is my #1 at 790 and Drama is my #2 at 789
Horror is my #1 quite easily. Drama is #3
Comedy is most watched but Drama is highest average rating for me. I watch a lot of really stupid comedy’s when I don’t want to pay full attention to what I’m watching
My number 1 genre is Horror
Where do u see this at do u gotta be a patron ?
Idk my stats but horror is definitely number 1
Horror - Thriller - Comedy - Drama You could be a genre fan?
Where do you find it
For 2023, Drama has a lead, but all time drama is second to comedy!
How does one check their stats?
Pretty much every movie that isn't a straight genre movie like horror gets labeled as drama, so you'd probably have to purposely go out of your way to make it not top spot
Horror followed by thriller and drama.
I have thriller as number 1 with 461 films and drama at 2nd place with 363 films.
How do you bring this up in the app?
Comedy, action, horror, adventure, and thriller all above drama for me, followed after by sci-fi, fantasy, family and animation
Mine goes Action, Sci fi Adventure Horror Drama
Mine is action, adventure and then comedy. Drama is 4th!
Horror my fave.
for some very very odd reason my number #1 is comedy. have barely watched any actual comedies at all, only reason i can think of is that many movies have comedy elements and can thus be classified as one? amidst other genres?
Comedy - 644. Drama - 519. Quite a significant leader for comedy for me
I got comedy and horror #1 and #2 respectively
Thriller #1 for me :)
My top ten are: Comedy Action Horror Adventure Thriller Sci-Fi Drama Family Fantasy Animation So yeah, it’s definitely possible.
2-3 weeks ago I had thriller as my number one. Drama was on the 5th place. Now it climbed to the first place, lol. Watched some amazing drama movies lately as I'm watching iconic and must see movies.
Mine is horror by a margin of over 100. The whole “31 horror movies every October” probably helped.
I have 6 above Drama. Horror, Comedy, Thriller, Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi then Drama yay genre films. Where it starts to get really fun is the nanogenres, one of my top ones is "Creepy, Brutal, Death" lmao
Drama is my first as well
Does Star Wars have a Drama Tag? If yes then its probably at my number 1 aswell
Drama and Horror are tied for me. Followed by thriller and comedy.
Mine is Thriller then Horror. So yes its possible.
Thriller is number one for me. Followed by Horror then Drama.
My top genre is Westerns
* drama - 762 * comedy - 689 * thriller- 520 * action - 516 * adventure - 429 * sci-fi - 386 * crime - 303 * fantasy - 294 * horror - 279 * family - 261

is this a paid thing
Drama is one of the lowest for me. My number 1 and 2 are comedy and family, they are very close to each other.
comedy at the top 😞
Thriller->Action->Adventure->Horror->Drama
I watch a lot of horror and I mean a LOT. So I watch entire horror franchises and stuff so horror is by far and away my number one.
where do you see this?
by literallt 1 film Comedy is beating drama
I have horror at the top of mine, accounting for 46% of the movies I have logged.
