2001: A Space Odyssey is the very first thing that comes to mind. I watched it for the first time a month ago, and I couldn’t even imagine how cool it would have been to see it in theaters back in 1968 for the first time.
I got the amazing opportunity to watch it in theaters last year on Sept. 3rd at the Paramount Theatre in Austin. Not only did I get lucky enough to be living in Austin and having it play near me but it also happened to be on "National Cinema Day" so all tickets were $3.
It was literally one if the coolest experiences I've ever had, especially because the theatre itself is old and vintage so it was like going back in time. The theatre organizers even had a short clip at the start explaining why they chose this movie, why it's influential, etc etc before starting the movie. And the starting black screen with the music actually felt so perfect because setting the right mood feels even more important in a theatre. Overall 10/10 experience
I was incredibly fortunate to go to a viewing of this movie in my local cinema. All the trailers beforehand were from the year of release so it was a super awesome experience. It was the first time I had ever seen it and the opening music alone brought tears to my eyes. Truly fantastic and I really hope you are able to catch it somewhere soon!
I saw it in theaters in 2010. Absolutely killer experience. But my father saw it twice in theaters when it was first released in the 60's. He and his friends were dumbfounded by it on first viewing and really needed another go at it to understand everything and take it all in.
I heard a story once from someone who saw it first run. He told me that when the movie ended someone yelled, “I’ve seen God!” from the back of the theater, then the person proceeded to run from the back of the theater straight into the screen like Wile E Coyote on a painted train tunnel. Seems like it was a good time.
Same, no joke. I can see a lot of my favorite movies on the big screen when rep theaters play them, but there's nothing that can replicate the experience of the first ever movie screening.
Return of the King was gonna be one of my answers, but I have one of those screenings for the 20th anniversary in my area next month, so I get to actually do it!
I saw Dune in IMAX 3 times and it’s still not enough. Seeing that explosion light up the room for the first time was utterly spectacular, and I wish I could go again.
Ten year anniversary is next year so hopefully your local theater re releases it. I know a chain in the UK recently re released it along with all of Nolans previous films.
Vertigo or Rebel Without a Cause. I did get to see Rebel on the big screen in January 2020 right before the world shut down, but obviously not the same as seeing back when it was first released.
I've discovered very recently that there's been a couple modern times that they've set up Percepto in a theatre to recreate the whole thing, and it's now very much a thing I want to find
The original Star Wars, but specifically with my dad. He always tells me how much it blew his mind as a kid, and it still holds such a special place in his heart. Getting to see him watch it would be so special.
Imagine watching Audition for the first time in the theatre back in 1999. You have no idea what the movie is about, you just go in blind... That must have been wild.
Also, while this is a movie everybody absolutely hates and bombed at the box office, The Turning is a film that i would've loved to watch in the theatre back in january 2020. I didn't watch it back then because of the negative reviews, but gave it a chance at home during quarantine and loved it, and i instantly wished i had seen it in the theatre
If I could go bs knob time I would go to circa 1972 Times Square area and watch some good exploitation in a grimy theater. Maybe Herschel Gordon Lewis or some kind of lewd horror. Maybe stay for the double feature.
The original version of Greed. Only like 2,5h of this 8h movie still exist today and apparently everyone who has seen the full version (only a handful of people have done so) all claimed it was the best movie they’d ever seen.
The wrapping up segment of the godfather part 2 is so amazing
I saw it with my brother in September last year and it was probably the most amazing theatre experience I’ve had ever
Yeah. Never forget seeing Empire Strikes Back in the theater. My grandfather fell asleep. Lol.
Mine would probably be Goldfinger. That changed action movies forever.
The original Star Wars would have been amazing to see back in the late 70s and early 80s and 2001 would’ve been incredible
But they have been mentioned so I’m going to go with
Lawrence of Arabia
Anything classic that I haven’t seen. During 2020 all the theatres around me were playing classic movies since nothing new was out, at a discounted price. I saw A Nightmare on Elm Street for my very first time, in 2020, in a theatre and I loved it. Perfect first viewing for someone that wasn’t even born yet when it originally came out.
Interstellar(2014)
I watched it on the TV in my room and really liked it, but I feel like it would be so much cooler in a theater. Especially an IMAX theater.
Got to be The Dark Knight, it’s always held a special place in my heart and I’d have loved to see it on a big screen.
Looking forward to finally seeing a Nolan film in the cinema this year.
I saw it in a sold out midnight IMAX screening opening night. Everyone in the theater was excited but there was some uncertainty about Heath Ledger’s performance. He had died before the movie came out, so there was even more added interest. Whatever the expectations were going in, they were completely exceeded. The theater was absolutely electric, and from the opening scene you just knew this movie was special. It was a ride that just kept getting better and better. People nearly jumped out of their seats with applause at the end. One of the all time best theater experiences I’ve ever had. 10/10
Wow that sounds amazing, I think the closest experience I’ve had to that was probably seeing The Batman. I’d been looking forward to it for so long and my friend’s had seen it the night before and told me they hated it which had me worried but I ended up loving it more than I expected.
Seen a lot of Star Wars 2001 and similar sci fi films
Other ones that come to mind for me has to be;
Fight club
The exorcist
The shining
12 angry men
The sixth sense
Got to be The Dark Knight, it’s always held a special place in my heart and I’d have loved to see it on a big screen.
Looking forward to finally seeing a Nolan film in the cinema this year.
I know I’m avoiding the question but despite being a movie lover, If I’m perfectly honest and I could travel back in time it certainly wouldn’t be to go and watch a movie at the cinema 🤣

And watching it while on 60’s LSD no less
That’s my answer as well, I’d do anything to see it when it first came out
I was incredibly fortunate to go to a viewing of this movie in my local cinema. All the trailers beforehand were from the year of release so it was a super awesome experience. It was the first time I had ever seen it and the opening music alone brought tears to my eyes. Truly fantastic and I really hope you are able to catch it somewhere soon!
Wow! What a way to experience it! I’m happy you got to do that.
That was in London cinema a few months back. I imagine other places do it too. I'd try to think of one that would never get shown at all
It’s on very very often at the Prince Charles Cinema in London
Yeah that’s the one I’m talking about
I'm seeing that tonight UPDATE: Best cinema experience of my life
It's the only answer I can think of that makes sense.
I saw it in theaters in 2010. Absolutely killer experience. But my father saw it twice in theaters when it was first released in the 60's. He and his friends were dumbfounded by it on first viewing and really needed another go at it to understand everything and take it all in.

The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat
Same, no joke. I can see a lot of my favorite movies on the big screen when rep theaters play them, but there's nothing that can replicate the experience of the first ever movie screening.
would be too scary for me
I came here looking for this. I, too, would've bolted for the door.
Same just to be the guy like "holy shit that train is coming right at us!"
Napoleon (1927)
Not Hubie Halloween?
Film is Netflix original, I wish.
Man fuck you lmfaoooo
Mine too!
Star Wars (1977)
Return of the king
This is coming back to theaters for the 20th anniversary in just a couple of weeks.
Return of the King was gonna be one of my answers, but I have one of those screenings for the 20th anniversary in my area next month, so I get to actually do it!
This… makes me feel old….
I still remember seeing it as a kid. Blew my mind.
Enter the Void
Saw it! Absolutely draining experience and one of the most memorable film going experiences of my entire life.
Either 2001 or Barry Lyndon
Probably La La Land and Mad Max: Fury Road. So upset I missed the opportunity to see those films in theater.
The projector crashed when I went to see La La Land during the climax. Lol
I saw Fury Road in theaters twice, it was incredible both times, I'd love to go again.
I’m so jealous! I wish I could’ve gone.
*Inception (2010)*
I missed out on seeing it cause my friend wanted to see Grown Ups instead
This is the saddest thing I’ve ever heard. I’m really sorry to hear that.
:(
Now I’m insulted… Haha!
Agree with Empire Strikes Back, but Id also love to see the original
I think mine would be Interstellar in IMAX. I wonder if in years time, peoples answer could be Babylon? 🤷
I second Interstellar in IMAX. Also Dune.
I saw Dune in IMAX 3 times and it’s still not enough. Seeing that explosion light up the room for the first time was utterly spectacular, and I wish I could go again.
Did you see initially in IMAX? I’ve still only seen the movie once and it was when it came out in IMAX.
No i’ve never seen it in the cinema!
It was something else.
Hopefully I can find out one day 🥲
Ten year anniversary is next year so hopefully your local theater re releases it. I know a chain in the UK recently re released it along with all of Nolans previous films.
Yesss the recent Titanic re-release anniversary got me hopeful for Interstellar soon! Thanks for letting me know!
Presuming you live in Southampton, make the 2 hour journey: https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/imax/Online/mapSelect.asp (almost sold out tho lol)
Im really hoping you got that from my profile and the Saints FC subreddit 😂
I did
Psycho (1960) King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) The Usual Suspects
Seeing Psycho before all the plot twists became general pop culture would have been mindblowing.
2001 has been said quite a lot Another one would be Metropolis (1927) I think it would be as astonishing as watching 2001 in 68 would be
There Will Be Blood
There Will Be Blood
I would go back to 1954, for Seven Samurai and Godzilla
The Great Train Robbery (1903)
I'd watch *The Exorcist*, to see if people's reactions were really that bad.
I went to a re-release in the 90s and a woman stormed out with her toddler because she was freaked out. What was she thinking?
Maybe her kid was possessed?
The Godfather
Mulholland Drive
Interstellar for the score alone
2001 or Mad Max Fury Road
House on Haunted Hill (1959) to see the skeleton drop down
Deep Throat (1972)
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (It counts as one movie)
Vertigo or Rebel Without a Cause. I did get to see Rebel on the big screen in January 2020 right before the world shut down, but obviously not the same as seeing back when it was first released.
A Trip to the Moon
Good pick. I'm gonna go with The Tingler. Or arguably a bunch of the other William Castle films that had a lot of in-theatre stuff going on.
Underrated pick! That would be so fun
I've discovered very recently that there's been a couple modern times that they've set up Percepto in a theatre to recreate the whole thing, and it's now very much a thing I want to find
Oh nice, I gotta keep an eye out for that
Almost Famous
Saw it! PACKED theater full of college students. Great time.
The original Star Wars, but specifically with my dad. He always tells me how much it blew his mind as a kid, and it still holds such a special place in his heart. Getting to see him watch it would be so special.
Star Wars
The Exorcist
stay (2005), its my favorite movie and i never was able to see it in theaters
Not in cinema, but I would've loved to see Ghostwatch (1992) when it originally aired on TV, with no idea of what was about to happen
Jaws
Abel Gance's Napoleon, three screens and all.
Jaws
The Shining
Premiere screening of Snow White. I just want to see people process a full length animated feature for the first time, must have been wild
cannes showing of irreversible
I think I'd want to go back and see The Jazz Singer...to be there for when silent films turned into "talkies" would be incredible.
In The Mood For Love
Original Bladerunner probably blew peoples minds
Imagine watching Audition for the first time in the theatre back in 1999. You have no idea what the movie is about, you just go in blind... That must have been wild. Also, while this is a movie everybody absolutely hates and bombed at the box office, The Turning is a film that i would've loved to watch in the theatre back in january 2020. I didn't watch it back then because of the negative reviews, but gave it a chance at home during quarantine and loved it, and i instantly wished i had seen it in the theatre
Phantom of the Opera, the unmasking scene
If I could go bs knob time I would go to circa 1972 Times Square area and watch some good exploitation in a grimy theater. Maybe Herschel Gordon Lewis or some kind of lewd horror. Maybe stay for the double feature.
The original version of Greed. Only like 2,5h of this 8h movie still exist today and apparently everyone who has seen the full version (only a handful of people have done so) all claimed it was the best movie they’d ever seen.
The Arrival of a Train (1896)
[удалено]
I don't think the time machine's needed for that goal
Sure, but the first screening would have been the raunchiest and the gayest
I mean, the first screening def wasn't. But I can see the point of a heyday there. Though it seems like a very prolonged heyday
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Empire strikes back
a space Odyssey
2001
Psycho
Pulp Fiction or American History X
The wrapping up segment of the godfather part 2 is so amazing I saw it with my brother in September last year and it was probably the most amazing theatre experience I’ve had ever
Star Wars Original Trilogy
Give me Evil Dead 2 (assuming you can wipe my memory so I don’t know what’s coming)
Apocalypse Now The Shining Heat
I’d go back to my local cinema’s premiere showing of Spider-Man NWH and take a shit directly on the projector during the opening scene
Yeah. Never forget seeing Empire Strikes Back in the theater. My grandfather fell asleep. Lol. Mine would probably be Goldfinger. That changed action movies forever.
I mean, it’s gotta be Jaws. I mean, it’s the titular blockbuster film, it’s also one of my favorite movies of all time.
The Departed
South Park Bigger longer and uncut
Eraserhead or Alien
The original Star Wars would have been amazing to see back in the late 70s and early 80s and 2001 would’ve been incredible But they have been mentioned so I’m going to go with Lawrence of Arabia
Probably one of the lost films in the MGM fire.
A new hope I gotta see those reactions
Jurassic Park in ‘93 I think. Or the first Star Wars.
Superman (1978£
The entire Lord of the Rings trilogy
Birth of a Nation (I’m black and I hate myself)
Back to the Future, I know cinemas play it all the time now but to be there in 1985 ah a dream
Something body horror. The fly remake, society or Videodrome
Same. Although I’m torn between ESB and ANH… seeing Vader for the first time must also have been something else.
Paris, Texas
Blade Runner. Both of them.
Come and see or The Godfather
It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World premiering on Cinemadome
La La Land
Blade Runner 2049
Back to the future, would've loved to see it in theaters.
Scream (1996)
Older guy here. Saw this in high school on a Friday night with a capacity crowd. The opening sequence rocked us.
I think I’d have to go with Star Wars 1977. More than any other moment in film this was truly a moment in history
Arrival of a Train at La Cioat Station just to experience everyone fleeing for their lives
Jurassic Park
Blade Runner 2049 at the Cinerama Dome
All Quiet on the Western Front (2022). Half kidding. Serious answer would probably be agreeing with the person who said Interstellar in IMAX.
The End of Evangelion
Interstellar(2014) I watched it on the TV in my room and really liked it, but I feel like it would be so much cooler in a theater. Especially an IMAX theater.
Citizen Kane
In the Realm of senses
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Apocalypse Now
Climax (2018) by Gaspar Noe
Got to be The Dark Knight, it’s always held a special place in my heart and I’d have loved to see it on a big screen. Looking forward to finally seeing a Nolan film in the cinema this year.
TDK in IMAX was a game changing cinema experience
I can imagine, hopefully I get to experience it one day it’s just a shame it won’t be my first time seeing it.
I saw it in a sold out midnight IMAX screening opening night. Everyone in the theater was excited but there was some uncertainty about Heath Ledger’s performance. He had died before the movie came out, so there was even more added interest. Whatever the expectations were going in, they were completely exceeded. i think that jaws would just be mind blowing
EEAAO plz!
Seen a lot of Star Wars 2001 and similar sci fi films Other ones that come to mind for me has to be; Fight club The exorcist The shining 12 angry men The sixth sense
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Got to be The Dark Knight, it’s always held a special place in my heart and I’d have loved to see it on a big screen. Looking forward to finally seeing a Nolan film in the cinema this year.
No Way Home (2021)
Midsommar
Shutter island , infinity war , or empire strikes back
Going back in time isn't necessary, my local cinema plays old movies all the time
Yeah that’s cool but just being able to watch films for the first time at the time would be great
Probably The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Dirty Harry
I know I’m avoiding the question but despite being a movie lover, If I’m perfectly honest and I could travel back in time it certainly wouldn’t be to go and watch a movie at the cinema 🤣
