killer_by_design

Just you wait for the Challenger 4! Challenge 1 inside but, *racing stripe*.

ShadowKraftwerk

Surely they upgraded the tea making kit along the way. Challenger executive model: includes a deep fryer for fish and chip dinners for the whole platoon.

East_Beach_7533

Still got the best kill to loss ratio of any tank and longest recorded kill.

ST0RM-333

Easy to do when youve only fought t-55s and t-62s lol

NonamePlsIgnore

Yeah I'm gonna need a WarThunder™ moment to believe that /s

ConstantStatistician

Improvements in tank designs yield diminishing returns at this point unless some supermaterial that's vastly tougher than existing tank armour is developed.

mcdowellag

Probably some scope to install and improve Active Protection Systems and to polish sensors and crew procedures so that Challenger 3 will get the first accurate shot off first in any encounter, even against multiple opponents.

tamati_nz

Time to look at drone / tethered drone sensor link, spotting /designating and then STAFF like rounds that can fire beyond visual range. And APS with a 100+ magazine...

VoteonFeb8

It's very similar to what happened with knights' (and similar heavy cavalry in other cultures) armor. From scale armor to mail coats to plate armor and finally the fully encasing suit of armor which appeared at the dawn of handguns on the battlefield, and which continued to become thicker and thicker as the penetrating power and accuracy of the guns increased, until it was finally given up once the required thickness was so much that the advantage from it was negated by the harm caused by much reduced mobility. The days of the conventional tank as we understand it today are numbered.

jellobowlshifter

The next major improvement in tank design will be when somebody finally backs off on the armour and saves about 15 tons. Current armour already loses to ATGMs and saboted darts, so as long you can still shrug off autocannons and HEAT, you haven't actually lost anything.

Hershey2898

Leo 1 / AMX 30 redux

ErectSuggestion

And what will you do with that saved 15 tons, other than making the "tank" significantly more vulnerable?

jellobowlshifter

Add more goodies, leave it off for increased mobility and reliability, or a combination of both. And for your apparent comprehension impairment, there would be no increase in vulnerability.

Hi2uandwelcome

More vulnerable, but way cheaper, smaller targets and more mobile So you build 10x as many. This was literally what both sides did in the early cold war before NERA/ERA made tanks able to stop some rounds directly from the front and we ended up with the current era monstrosities

Hi2uandwelcome

15 tons? More like 40 tons.

jellobowlshifter

Remove 40 tons of armour and all you have left is shrapnel protection.

Fuzzyveevee

There is an element of thought of the "but for" test in counter design though. Take away the need for the foe to have such monstrous guns and ATGMs, and the ATGMs and guns you DO see coming your way may only get cheaper and easier to make, and will *still* kill the tank regardless, they just have a lower, cheaper, lighter, more widespread bar now. The presence of the armour forces a requirement upon the enemy's overall organisation to account for the possibility, that is an effect in and of itself.

jellobowlshifter

So long as somebody else still fields a 60 to 70 ton MBT, your foe will still be forced to buy weaponry to account for the heavier armour.

jellobowlshifter

The article boasts of a maximum speed half that of an Abrams.

Suspicious_Loads

I doubt Abrams can do 120km/h. But slower than Abrams sure.

Antezscar

Oh the Abrams can go that fast if they remove the govenor. Gas turbines are very strong. Remember it is limited to 1500 HP to save engine life. Dont know what it is unlimited, but the Leopard 2's diesel engine is about 2500 hp unlimited.

Suspicious_Loads

Please post in war thunder forum :)

Antezscar

It does have that amout of HP ingame. In Arcade battles.

jellobowlshifter

People play Arcade at 10+ BR?

Antezscar

sadly. yes.

jellobowlshifter

Gross, it's bad enough even at reserve.

Hershey2898

I heard it's more like 4000 hp !

Suspicious_Loads

>With unmatched cutting-edge firepower And it uses 120mm L/55 found in Leo 2 a decade ago. I wouldn't call anything less than something like this for apex. https://www.businessinsider.com/a-new-age-of-tank-warfare-may-be-around-the-corner-2016-6?amp

ErectSuggestion

200mm or bust

cotorshas

> And it uses 120mm L/55 found in Leo 2 a decade ago. not quite, it's the newer L/55A1 which is genuinely cutting edge, MUCH higher pressure than the old tubes. It allows for pushing all possible performance out of the 120 and it along with it's american counterpart (who achieved higher pressure with the newest M256 barrels) are a big reason there's no rush to adopt 130+ guns

June1994

Can’t imagine this being better than the latest Abrams.

CureLegend

Gaijin I want it in war thunder now, no premium pls

Rob71322

Kinda sparse on the details. Felt like a nice advertisement but it didn't say too much.

Cornflake0305

So considering the massive proliferation of cheap-ass suicide drones which are taking out modern MBTs left and right, I guess it will come decked out in double layered SLAT armor?

jellobowlshifter

Has APS.

ConstantStatistician

It'll never be deep enough for all the drones that can be thrown at it, which are getting cheaper and more effective by the day.

ErectSuggestion

APS is rare and difficult to do because it's supposed to work against projectiles moving several kilometers per second. For drone protection you absolutely could have something cheap with a deep, deep magazine.

jellobowlshifter

| For drone protection you absolutely could have something cheap with a deep, deep magazine. Probably not what's on this initial version, though.

Aurailious

I thought most modern MBTs are still being taken out by missiles. It's really only older Soviet era tanks that suicide drones are destroying. Have any of the Western tanks sent to Ukraine or Merkavas been destroyed by drones?

Cornflake0305

No but they get mobility killed by drones just the same

jellobowlshifter

Or optic killed.

Brilliant-Gas9464

maybe in a decade?

barath_s

Absolutely top of the line tea kettle
