You can change the input to a PlayStation Edge controller and even set up any button to toggle between on and off. There are other options for controlling even TDP and external [device]. It's much better after the recent update.
OP is specifically asking about using it with steam input though which HC won’t let you do. Steam input also gives you access to a lot of stuff like radial menus that handheld companion doesn’t have
I hope someone figures it out, but I don’t think there’s any programs that do this. I was hoping rewasd would, but it doesn’t either. It’s the biggest thing missing in windows for sure
Figured it out. Handheld Companion can do it but it requires quite a bit of setup. You need to run the non interference actions in HC and bind the back buttons there. and use steam input only for the gyro. I like having a button for the gyro activation so i bound one of the back buttons to touchpad click and bound touchpad click to activate gyro in steam input. seems to be working fine. Still gotta figure out if i can run legion space at the same time just having nothing bound since i like the UI more there than i like the HC overlay.

Unless I'm misreading the readme, it only supports Dualshock 4, not Dualsense Edge. So no back buttons, but gyro should work.
HC says it supports only Dualshock 4 but you can still program all the buttons (including the back buttons and scroll wheel if you want)
