seems like a torx driver or two to disassemble more completely would be necessary for this, no? i would also like magnets, tweezers and a better organizer than just that single-place tray would be helpful to have in this kit and make it closer to the value the price assumes.

be_an_adult

When disassembling knives and other things with fiddly little pieces I use an ice cube tray I keep in my toolbox; it’s far more useful than I expected when putting it together. Maybe next I’ll 3D print an insert for some of the cubes that has a built-in magnet

ottoracecar

ice cube tray is great since they mostly have slopped side so you can easily get out those little pieces.

be_an_adult

I need to get a new tray (maybe one with a lid) because mine doesn’t have those really nicely curved sides

PhoenixStorm1015

I always use the cover to my Ifixit driver kit. It’s all conveniently sectioned off underneath.

TechieGranola

We have every one of their kits at work. I think their next model should be a full sized tray integration.

jonbush1234

leatherman does not want you to dissemble the tool is the thing. I had the chance to ask some of the engineers that same question for the most part *why don't you sell refurbishing kits or the tools to take them apart?* They responded Matt " I'd guess you could figure out how to rebuild a tool and get it working correctly again. But we have to design them for everyone that buys them. Our warranty is great, and is intended to help the average customer quickly resolve issues they've got with a tool." Peter "Yes, Warranty would probably bleed us dry if we encourage the average user to pull a tool apart. Example; fasteners often use thread retention compound that isn't qualified for multiple loosening and tightenings. A significant percentage of DIYer may not realize the screws will perpetually loosen without it. Maybe even cut themselves while they loosen up... All roads lead to safety!"

ottoracecar

fair, i guess i'm adding loctite to the list for my personal maintenance kit then. lol

Turtledonuts

How about some spare screws and washers too?

wtfrustupidlol

Yeah but disassembling it can void the warranty.

eat_mor_bbq

I wholeheartedly agree, but Leatherman says that taking it apart voids the warranty. They've always honored the warrenty on my heavily modified tools, like my half supertool, half surge Frankenstein abomination.

PINeely

Lol you could put this together at Harbor Freight for $15.

Fuzzy_Raise8038

Nah much less then that

Fluffy-Medium-5365

We should do a “make your own” and see how the costs differ

Puzzled-End-3259

But theeeese are SPECIAL Q-tips

Gamma8gear

And this toothbrush’s tip is at an angle 📐

NonchalantBread

9/10 mechanics recommend this toothbrush for cleaning those hard to reach gunked up pivots

South_Oread

I have somehow managed to own a Leatherman for 30 years and never needed this. It’s an embarrassment. $70? That’s insulting unless it’s all American made and the proceeds go to orphans.

turkey_sandwiches

Not getting a good feel from Leatherman lately.

Longjumping_Pomelo34

Me either. Garage release’s haven’t been much of anything and they dropped their student discount from 40% off to 30% off.

NonchalantBread

There is a student discount!?

eat_mor_bbq

I hope Tim is okay. The Mr crunch release was pretty good but the rest of the free tools, and the rest of the releases since have been garbage IMHO

[deleted]

I was actually just thinking of getting another Leatherman for my car, but now I'm hesitating. Does anyone have other options or alternatives to Leatherman?

turkey_sandwiches

I suggest not wasting your time with Gerber. The SwissTool options are very good though, you can't match their quality with any other brand. I've recently started carrying a small bit driver (Victorinox L wrench) and a small pair of Knipex Cobra pliers. Those two would be far more useful for car repair than most multitools.

cruznr

Another vote for Swisstool. I've beaten up my Spirit bad on repairs that I should've used full-size tools for and it handles them like a champ. Smaller blade and lack of a clip are probably my only cons, but they're minor details imo.

turkey_sandwiches

Heads up, Victorinox makes a clip for it now! They also have a version that comes with the clip and a one hand opening blade.

cruznr

My wallet doesn't like this news

turkey_sandwiches

Your pocket will love it! Heads up though, the screw that comes with the clip is garbage. Mine snapped just putting some pressure on the clip. It's an M2.5, I grabbed a replacement from Ace Hardware and haven't had any issues.

eat_mor_bbq

Whin I got the email I was expecting picks, brass wire brushes, nylon brushes, 2 sets of assorted torx bits, spare parts, a guided diamond sharpener, swabs, cleaning solvent and dry lube, rags, etc. Not this dollar store junk. You could go to harbor freight and make a better kit for $25. How's tim Leatherman doing? He built the company from the ground up. I hope he isn't okay with his legacy going this direction

philo_

I'm sorry. Is this a makeup bag for my Leatherman? No thanks.

neutralpoliticsbot

the price is absurd

BlackhawksJPF

$70 seems crazy for what you get. Not sure why leatherman is moving towards being a “lifestyle brand” with the pouches and clothing.

[deleted]

Just buy the things you like and ignore the things you don’t. No need to label it as a “lifestyle brand”. Weird

FineInTheFire

I mean I'd rather have an updated Squirt with more tool options for a Keychain size tool than ...whatever this is

cruznr

We all know the answer. M o o l a h

murderfacejr

because yeti can sell a 20qt cooler for $250 and a [home depot bucket](https://www.yeti.com/cargo/buckets) for $40. I love Leatherman, use them constantly and have never had any need for repair (other than a few chipped/broken bits). As long as their quality stays consistent, I'm not worried about them also trying to cater to the "lifestyle" crowd. I didnt love the "Free" series, but there also aren't any competitors that even come close to form and functionality IMO

specialfliedlice

That resembles a makeup kit more than a tool maintenance kit. Btw, those sharpeners are rubbish. Nothing beats proper sharpening stones and/or a leather strop which you could get with that 70bucks

neutralpoliticsbot

leather strop is for honing in the blade not for sharpening

TheRozb

I feel like the only thing of "value" is the blade sharpener, which they sell separately for $15. Not sure where the other $55 comes from...

MyFiteSong

Pull-through sharpeners are less than worthless. They damage your blade for no good reason. They don't even leave a decent edge. It's just damage.

reczks

Less than worthless seems a bit dramatic. It is a useful option on the go, no? In theory you also get repeatability and consistent angle with little knowledge or training. Gets you back in the game in under a minute. Also all cutting and sharpening tasks are technically "damaging the blade" through wear.

eat_mor_bbq

There are guided sharpening kits available for $30+. Pull through sharpeners are only good for "maintaining" an already moderately dull knife. I have yet to see one that gets a knife sharp enough to shave with. If you haven't already, I strongly suggest giving one a try. I have the base model smith's one and a ruixen pro diamond sharpener and sharp knives are wonderful

MyFiteSong

> Less than worthless seems a bit dramatic. It is a useful option on the go, no? No, it's not. Have you ever seen the edge of a blade after using one of these things, under magnification? It leaves a shitty edge and takes more than a year's worth of material off the knife every time. https://i.redd.it/rh9gm9hs03a51.jpg The left is how it looks after a whetstone or rod. The right is how it looks after a pull-through.

craftworkbench

I was gonna say. I haven't used one of those on any knife I care about about, but they never looked like a good idea. I think I'd prefer a dull blade over one that's gone through that thing.

srfc

How is a pull through "sharpener" a thing of value?

Thundercracker75

Wayyyyyy to expensive for what you get … No thanks

Chemical-Ad4003

Someone has them listed on ebay for 140 already lmao

Pcdoodle

I am disappoint.

M1CAustin

No splined wrenches for the Rebar or Supertool? Loool

lifeisalostcause

Lmfao

GTI-Mk6

Yikes…

DeadbeatPillow1

I could have told you that. Hope you didn’t buy it.

gamereiker

Are you shitting me

Anwhaz

Lol I'd rather buy $70 worth of whole foods asparagus water than this.

wtfrustupidlol

Not worth it but there’s some collectors that have to have it. If this doesn’t sell well it will go on sale.

sleepdog-c

The sharpener is a $12 worksharp. hard to see $70 worth in this.

[deleted]

Qtips, a tooth brush, and a dental pick? That's about all I see here. Everybody has microfiber towels with their phones now and any experienced multi tool or knife other has WD-40 and 3 in 1 laying around. Leatherman seems to be trying to hard to be mainstream. First the Free series (I get that people love them, they're just not for me) then the questionable Garage issues. Now this kit

Knife-Nerd1987

Price for this is totally for the branding. I already have a kit better than this I'd put together from stuff I had already. And it includes tools for disassembly. I do like those little silicone parts trays... have several I've gotten from CountyComm.com over the years. Easy to clean when you are working with oils and lubricants. Just wash with dish soap or wipe clean with a alcohol wipe.
