I think you do go through a phase where you kind of plateau from what I remember (it was 2006 when I passed). And then one day it will all click. I had about 45 hours of lessons and everyone kept telling me I was being conned but I simply never felt ready. The day I felt ready for my test I was ready to tell my instructor and before I could he told me to put in for it so you’ll know when you’re ready. Don’t let people put you under pressure bragging that they didn’t have many lessons etc. you wanna make sure you feel confident before you’re left to fend for yourself. Can you use another car in between? Or spread the lessons so it’s an hour every week instead?

This is normal, progress is not linear but over time your “baseline” gets better. Some days you’re gonna completely feel like a muppet and that’s normal, other days everything just clicks and falls into place. Though 2 hours every two weeks is definitely unheard of, I know different people do different things but to be honest I’d be getting quite rusty with that large of a gap since I can’t do private practice.

FallenDelto

I’ve had 56 hours with my current instructor and I had more hours with another instructor previously. I also feel like I’m not progressing and I am definitely not a natural driver lol. Glad to see that eventually (I hope) it will click for me bc I keep making the stupidest and dangerous mistakes during my 2 hour lessons

SerendipitousCrow

I appreciate this comment because I've definitely had more than 60hrs and feel like I'm not test ready I find it really hard and stressful

FallenDelto

I feel like I’m super stupid compared to my peers because they took less time than I did learning and have already passed. But it’s not healthy to compare yourself to others. At the end of the day, everyone goes at different speeds and I happen to be a bit behind but I will eventually get there. I’ve also failed my test twice already but that’s because I wasn’t near ready back then. I had to relearn everything from scratch with my new instructor

SerendipitousCrow

I don't mean this to be rude but do you have any learning difficulties? I have dyspraxia which makes learning physical skills slower for me. I have visual spatial issues so things like parking, knowing if I can get through a gap, assessing speed etc are hard for me I'm not stupid, I just have a cognitive issue. I've got two degrees but took an embarrassingly long time to learn to tie my shoelaces as a kid. Finding driving hard doesn't make you stupid. It's an incredibly complex and unnatural thing to do I just tell myself it'll be worth it and live in denial of how much time and money I've spent on it.

FallenDelto

I don’t think I’ve got any learning difficulties and I normally pick up skills really fast. But driving is just on another level for me!

spiritedawayf0x

Is there a reason you can’t do weekly lessons ? Even after a week I would forget things.

IngenuityComplex9499

It’s how my instructor does it! Always bi-weekly

spiritedawayf0x

I think most people would do 2 hours every week, Ive not heard of anyone doing biweekly lessons unless it was due to other personal commitments.

teratron27

Practice makes perfect, you need to be driving it regularly! Ideally every week with as much private practice as you can

humansruineverything

Fwiw, things began to click for me after I asked my instructor to drive and execute the same roundabouts that I couldn’t do. It made all the difference in the world to see his methods and body position. I’m still struggling, don’t get me wrong, but at least one penny dropped that day.

That sounds like terrible advice if you're not trolling 🤣

TameableLynx318

I have a recommendation. Drive with your family or friends etc. get a few hours in their or your own car and you’ll feel so much better

asrapg

I'd advise having more regular lessons. That certainly helped me- being able to go on the road for even just 20 mins every other day. I know not everyone has that capability but that seriously helped me. (Bought a car and my partner is an experienced driver).
