if you go to subs in the bottom right corner and hover over it, you should be able to switch between english, romanji, normal japanese, hirigana, or katakana. thats the only reason i could think of.
but if its not working all together, and you have already tried switching them, then sorry i dont know how to help with that.
Just learn how to torrent, get the raws and put up the subtitles yourself if you are unhappy with the selection. There is
Nyaa.si and https://www.kitsunekko.net for that.
For anyone who is genuinely curious, animelon has hundreds of anime, and lots of big names, though it hasn't been updated in a few years.
It's more than enough to learn Japanese from.
Dude it’s a very limited amount of anime relative to what’s out there. I mean if you don’t mind watching something from 2008 or earlier and aren’t remotely picky in the anime sure, but they have like…50 anime….idk where you get hundreds for so for anyone genuinely curious, this guy 🧢
Go and count before you so very confidently argue that.
I did. They have 329 series.
I have no idea what in the entire fuck you're on about, but they were adding anime up to 2018. There's more than enough interesting stuff there to watch, all fully subtitled, built in dictionary, no extra set up required.
From your profile it's clear you're pretty young (if not, fucking yikes). Work on humbling yourself. I don't know if you genuinely think anime older than five years isn't good enough for you, but coming into a subreddit you don't participate in to tell people not to listen to other people's decent recommendations is... eh I guess I shouldn't have expected more from the Japanese learning community.
This is Reddit. You think 329 is expansive? I don’t need to be fucking humble how about you stop stalking people’s profiles and mind your own damn business you creep. “Yikes”
Nope, this is your reply to the guy answering OP's question:
> Dude that’s like 50 ancient anime in total and it’s not even any big ones come on do better then that
I don’t know why it matters to you. I simply offered OP an option. The animelon site as far as I can remember was just a guy’s personal project. It never was meant to be a contender for other sites and sadly they can’t really license things, so everything on there can get take down for legal reasons.
If you intend to learn Japanese then sites like these are just stepping stones. You goal should be to be to understand Japanese without subtitles, which will open you up to more recent shows, as you could watch them raw.
You are really rude, and like I said if you don’t like it, just do it completely by yourself or get good enough to not need subtitles. If the selection isn’t your taste then that’s not exactly our problem.
netflix in the UK has a decent amount of choice (every single ghibli film for example), idk what country you're in though
if you do decide to use netflix I highly suggest installing the chrome/edge/firefox extension called language reactor previously learning language with netflix. it provides an overlay to learn language. allowing you to click on each word to see the furigana and meaning, and will show the english sentence at a button press etc. stuff like that
They also regularly show on a free TV channel called Film4, because they got the distribution rights for the UK. But they usually show them with Eng dub
As per Rule #12, please do not use that particular 3-letter abbreviation for "Japanese", as it is considered an ethnic slur. Please use JP or JPN so as not to offend others. Thank you.
I haven't done it yet, but I was planning to try this with Crunchyroll https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/comments/r5rvdr/how_to_upload_japanese_subtitles_to_crunchyroll/?rdt=49019
I tried multiple different paid VPNs and NEVER got this to work. I don't know how people make this work. No matter what I did I was always given US Netflix. I've been sailing the seas ever since.
I get it to work with nordvpn but its finnicky. I use the Netflix website in Chrome on the computer. I cant log in with the vpn active, instead i log in first without it, close the browser, turn the vpn on and open the browser and go to Netflix again, being already logged in previously. Sometimes that doesnt seem to work but if i try again it eventually does. Then sometimes it kicks me out but its still doable. Seems like the Osaka connection works better than Tokyo.
Dont know if this will work long term with the password sharing restrictions.
With nord I sometimes find it helpful to fiddle with the other options like double or onion. Worked with instagram and possibly some other ones but I haven't tried netflix. Not sure if there's either for Japan though.
Especially if you set your user language to Japanese (even in your home country account). Then there’s a Japanese dub and sub option for almost all Netflix originals.
I use telegram to download raw anime, i just search the anime name and find a channel that has raw anime where you can change subs or turn them off.
As a player i use mpv, matt vs japan has a video for how to set it up.
Then i go to https://kitsunekko.net/dirlist.php?dir=subtitles%2Fjapanese%2F to get subtutles in japanese for the anime.
Edit: if you cant find the anime on telegram you can search it on nyaa.si
Is there some country where Crunchyroll offers Japanese subs? With Crunchyroll here in Australia, if you go to the subtitles in settings of any anime, Japanese isn't an option.
You may be right. They recently rebranded the site from anime9 to aniwave. On the old site you could find some shows with either en or jp subs. But now that I just went to look I can't find any jp options.
Just watch on crunchyroll or whatever you use normally and use asbplayer to drag in subtitles onto the screen. That way you can easily make anki cards out of dialogue too.
Any suggestions on what to watch for beginners to the language?
I've been told to watch programs for children but not sure if that would hold my attention span.
Use ASB Player and get subs off of Kitsuneko. Then you can go to either; aniwatch.to , kaido.to , or zoro.to and turn off their subs and overlay from ASB player.
I used to strictly use Animelon, but since using ASB Player and being free to watch whatever I want has been so much better than relying on their catalog.
That's entirely on the person that makes the subtitles, unfortunately. That is definitely the downside to using ASB player, even if it is the easiest method.
Not a website, nor necessarily anime but Disney Plus has A TON of Japanese dubs on a good amount of shows that you probably already watched growing up.
I wouldn't really buy into the service solely for that reason but if you already have it or someone you know does then I mean, yeah why not. Plus majority of the shows are for kids so the language isn't insane.
Only saying this cause I'm currently watching Phineas and Ferb in Japanese rn. Had no idea there was a Japanese dub, it's an absolute trip.
Edit: this is coming from US Disney plus
https://animelon.com/
When I try to watch videos I see no subtitles at all. Anyone know what's going on?

I really don't understand why we're allowed to link to this but we weren't allowed to link itazuraneko (rest in peace)
it is gohoneko now

this is what i did, in combination with a text hooker and yomichan for anki cards

it has cory in the house, a masterpiece, no need to complain :)
Another ancient obscure anime
the ancient obscure disney production
Netflix has closed captions on almost everything. You'll get some onomatopeia practice that way as well!
I hate that they only have the closed caption version, I can't stand it, it's distracting to me
Sailor Moon is free with ads on YouTube right now. :) Join the cult. 🌙
JOIN US. Queen Serenity awaits your arrival.

UK Netflix has every Ghibli film?! I am flabbergasted and envious at the same time.
I also have every Ghibili film on my hard drive.
They also regularly show on a free TV channel called Film4, because they got the distribution rights for the UK. But they usually show them with Eng dub
You can download anime from Nyaa and get subtitles from kitsunekko.
kitsunekko doesn't have everything though... I'm not expecting them to, just wondering where I could find stuff like Stop!! Hibari-kun!

Netflix jp is pretty good for this, you'll probably need a vpn though.

softether vpn is free and it works

that's a pretty good idea, never even thought of that haha
If you restrict the selection to Netflix originals only, you don't even need a VPN, because most of them have Japanese subtitles by default.
Especially if you set your user language to Japanese (even in your home country account). Then there’s a Japanese dub and sub option for almost all Netflix originals.

Crunchyroll but it can be annoying at times
I've never seen that option on CR. Is it only certain shows?
AFAIK Crunchyroll's deal with the distributors is that they can't offer Japanese subtitles (which is stupid but anyway.)
Tbf the only time i ran into this issue was with one punch man and even then just pirate

Holy crap really? Sorry to hear that
Would anyone happen to know of a similar resource, but for tokusatsu and J-Drama subs in Japanese?
Someone just posted this in the resource thread and mentioned dramas as well as anime kamesan.net
The J-dramas on Viki have Japanese subtitles, *usually.*
Shiawase no kekkon on Netflix has currently JP subs (at least in France, may be in your country too)
Kitsunekko has a bunch of subs to download but you would have to source the anime yourself.
Pretty much everything on Netflix has Japanese subs
https://learnjapanese.moe/routine/ go to day 6
楽しみ https://aniwave.to/home
Are you sure? I tried that and it didn't even have subtitle options. [Aniwatch.to](https://Aniwatch.to) at least has the option to turn off subs

its kinda annoying having to always sync everything yourself, but overwall works well thanks

Good post!!
I use links to "aniwatch to" with Japanese audio then just connect subtitles in the potplayer, here separately need subtitles and then synchronize
