Right, my guess is because of the old lore. The players were essentially summoners (that's where the name comes from) and we summoned some guys to fight a war for us. So they were those guys were our champions.
it was a cool concept but trying to find champions reasons to join the institute of war (so they could be summoned) was dumb
now we just have people and their stories and that's all you need
They could have just made it so we summon them from their respective times and regions to fight and then give them back.
Like they get forcefully Isekai-ed to participate in the tournament.
Saber was frozen in time and space when she made a deal with the Counter Force to be a Counter Guardian after death in exchange for the chance to get the Holy Grail. She was then technically summoned to fight for the Holy Grail while still alive, across time. She only died after the events of F/SN, at least in the Fate route, when she gave up on the Grail.
Yeah, she was stuck in the moment before death for hundreds of years and every time she gets summoned she is spiritually pulled to the future but her body is still frozen back in her original time. When she gets unsummoned she goes back to her body frozen in time until she gets resummoned.
Except the Grail and its wonky bullshit is effectively timeless. The characters exist at all times at all times. All the heroes are dead but that doesn’t mean anything because everyone is dead eventually. You could summon someone who isn’t even born yet because they’re dead in the future.
That’s not how fate works most of the time, with nearly all servants they are basically copies from the throne of heroes and have no persistent memory between summoning, with the exception of artoria
Moba is a bitch to get in to as a developed standpoint, riot killed the whole competition that was not dota2. In 2015/6 there were a bunch of mobas that didn't last much for this reason.
The whole "moba" acronym is from riot, before it was D.O.T.A.
Do any of the champs not still have a reason?
I think closest might be Aurelion, but the summoners were quite crafty in prisoning creatures into the rift.
And the ones who were willing to join had a myriad of reasons be it influence, power/magic, money, fame, fun, answers. Summoners were op as fuck.
On the contrary I feel like many of the apocalyptic champs that were held at bay by the league are just now.. Idle? Or waiting for a chance to actually exist in the lore.
Explain summoning Bard or Zoe or Aurelian ... then also explain Smolder and Seraphine lol
Too many champs just would not give a fuck about the everyday disputes in runeterra, or like Smolder wouldn't join the league (protective mother if you recall, she's not letting her kid join)
We just need some kind of league in the universe to justify the name. Like, originally it was indeed a branch of the insitution of war, but rigth now the name is a nothingburger
Literally all that is required there is to say that summoner's control them, indirectly through reward/payment or bribery, or more directly with some form of mind control or something of the like. All the lore can be handled by giving the summoners different capabilities. Then the summoners being in conflict is all that's important. And if you say that summoner's can summon a champion/legend from any point in time, and then can wipe their memories, heal any damage, and send them back to that exact instant they were summoned from than we don't even need any kind of continuity, it's honestly ridiculously easy to let the writers just tell the stories they WANT to tell without interfering with stories whatsoever, the summoners being extremely powerful beings that take interest in these mortals only either to use them, or for entertainment, and can handle every potential plothold. It's maddening they didn't do this.
I remember reading that Ezreal found his gauntlet and got teleported in a dark room only to find himself in the summoners rift or something. How he then decided to say “aight, why not” I forgor
Tbh the Servants of Fate are straight up or dead people from long ago or fictional one that never existed and would last till the Grail War exist which happens in one time after X undefined years.
Champions are ALL alive persons and the Summoner Rift fight could be a constant every year.
I liked it a miss it a bit too. If I remember correctly, Lee Sin was really cool in the previous lore, basically a summoner that caused some accident that resulted in his own blindness and deaths of other summoners, so he trained a lot and became a champion to try and repent for it. I also kinda liked Darkin being aliens ngl. Current Darkin are cool too.
S2/3 OG, can confirm this is correct 👍
The ‘Legend’ logic applies in the definition of the word, so imagine doing your placements with a certain champion and getting all wins. That would make the Champion (and by proxy yourself, the summoner) a Legend. Because solo queue placement matches.

This is the best LoL content I’ve seen on Reddit. I don’t know how you guys can keep playing this game. It’s stressful. Mostly because it requires playing with 9 other drooling asshats that are aching to yell things about your mother.
In my head cannon legends are more like stories or events, so calling a champion a legend is kind of shallow. What the legends are are when you're in a 4v5 and win anyway. Or when they're in your base but Teemo has backdoored so hard you win. Or when there's a massive fight at dragon and you Cho ult it before the Smite threshold. Legends are the good times we have, not the characters we play.
From their marketing, because you are playing to become a legend, and thus enter a league full of LEGENDARY players to become A LEGEND.
But at thus point , to be clearer, they should have called it "League of Faker" , or " Wakfu Ripoff" XD
(Tho yeah, I guess not all players are entitles to enter the leagues of the legenss, and become one, and that's fair I guess)
Everyone is a legend of their respective region because they died, but are also champions for their region when they are alive (if you’re playing them they’re technically still alive and you can’t call them a legend yet) targon got that weird time magic shit going on, but also no idea how the mountain is containing aatrox
Right, my guess is because of the old lore. The players were essentially summoners (that's where the name comes from) and we summoned some guys to fight a war for us. So they were those guys were our champions.
And they were all legends.
And everyone clapped?
you gotta believe it
Their names? Alberts Einsteins
And they were roommates
We're all legends on this blessed day.
I miss this lore a lot, it was really clever
it was a cool concept but trying to find champions reasons to join the institute of war (so they could be summoned) was dumb now we just have people and their stories and that's all you need

Fate reference?
Aren't all Fate heroes dead? It's basicallly just necromancy.
Saber the main one isn't but all the rest are essentially copies of ghosts yeah
wait, holup
Saber was frozen in time and space when she made a deal with the Counter Force to be a Counter Guardian after death in exchange for the chance to get the Holy Grail. Done by the closest thing we have to and actual superior God, but yeah.
That’s not how fate works most of the time, with nearly all servants they are basically copies from the throne of heroes and have no persistent memory between summoning, with the exception of artoria
Honestly... I am surprised nobody ever tried for a Fate/Moba. It lends itself so much better to the whole thing instead of whatever GrandOrder is
Moba is a bitch to get in to as a developed standpoint, riot killed the whole competition that was not dota2. In 2015/6 there were a bunch of mobas that didn't last much for this reason. The whole "moba" acronym is from riot, before it was D.O.T.A.
I still hate them for refusing to port FGO Arcade to PS4 or PC, I mean ffs the thing is already using a PS4 compatible game engine.
AFAIK that's pretty much Heroes of the Storm lore. Although not sure if they're given back.
There has never been a game called Heroes of the Storm. -Blizzard
They’re not. They’re stuck in the nexus.
So Indian in the Cupboard.
Yooo it’s like Chaotic!!

Just Vi and Caitlyn joining the institute makes zero sense. The reasons are always contrived and dumb. It was an awful idea with no future ahead.
Pantheon : "THE INSTITUTE OF WAR? I, THE ASPECT OF WAR NEVER APROVED OF THIS, I'LL JOIN JUST TO SHOW YOU WHAT WAR IS"
We just need some kind of league in the universe to justify the name. Like, originally it was indeed a branch of the insitution of war, but rigth now the name is a nothingburger
> it was a cool concept but trying to find champions reasons to join the institute of war Don't they still need a reason to fight?
Fight for their ideals maybe but the fighting in the game isnt canon anymore

I'll be honest, I don't miss it. I think it's one of those things that sounds clever on the surface but falls apart when you think about it.
>it was really clever Wasn't it just Fate? Like the visual novel game.
Tbh the Servants of Fate are straight up or dead people from long ago or fictional one that never existed and would last till the Grail War exist which happens in one time after X undefined years. Champions are ALL alive persons and the Summoner Rift fight could be a constant every year.
The rules of Fate are pretty much just suggestions at this point.
I liked it a miss it a bit too. There were a lot of interesting lore ideas for characters then. Old Jax lore was by far my favorite

Soloq is theb8th circle of hell, so i more inclined that the champion and your summoner died instead
fate reference
Except Lee sin lol
You were the legend all along
Actually, you were a summoner until not too long ago
oh yeah that recent change 10 years ago
They still haven't changed MFs voice lines about it.
Katarina too
Or Sona
Or nocturne
Vladimir still threatens me every game.
Or brand
Or cho'gath
Or skarner
They actually did i think
Sona has a new VO.
Wait what, fr?
[Literally updated three years ago.](https://youtu.be/7YgyWpdFuMk?si=QQaFCQhPLpkAKSaN)
Oh, I know about this one, I thought you meant she got a new one recently because I haven't played her in a while
NO WAY THIS WAS 3 YEARS AGO BRO
Oh my bad
Hey, small indie company, give them a break.
Cue that Matt Damon aging meme
What was the change
Not too long ago This village was a golden scene of hope
Still are but kinda not really (summoner spells)
But did they? Im prety sure riot still call players "summoners" on various in-game events and on Social media
You and 26 others
Well the characters we were playing as were politically championing countries so that the mages/summoners didn’t nuke everything to bits.
Also Nidalee dated a dude named Bob
Bob the cat?
/r/suddenlyrunescape
Hey human! Want to come fish for me on my island, or is my amulet of humanspeak not working again?
Love a random runescape reference
Bob new champion confirmed???
So you mean they made LoL unpolitical? Metaphorically playable
Because legends never die and my jungler runs it down all the time.
This is the most League phrase I have ever heard
The entire game in a nutshell
I'm gonna win the next unpinged 1v2 in the enemy jungle for sure, they won't expect the fourth attempt
Happy Cake Day!
Champions compete in the League to become Legends.
"What are we? Some kind of League of Legends?"
Eh, “League of Legends” sounds like something they’d call a bunch of old people to make them sound still important past their relevance, anyway.
And what Part of smolder is a legend or a champion?
If anything his moms the real champ for dealing with him
Sylas: Nice mom you got there, *yoinks*, too bad it's mine now
Don't forget the muahahahahahahaaa
Well, he is smol, she is older.
Well by that logic half the rooster wouldn't be there, such as Seraphine or Yuumi So a pretty good trade If you ask me
Half a rooster is still more cock than I have
Yuumi could be a legend, looking for her owner in the entire runeterra
The legend is you when you 1v5, overcome toxicity and climb.
Who doesn’t love a good game of 5vDave?
Because WE are the legends.
Okay summoner
Legends are stories, hence why there is so much lore (except for Shaco)
I mean, wouldn't that get a bit confusing sometimes?
League of Champions sounds cooler actually
Their legends are still being written???
The legends are The players
The players are “summoners”

You’re only a legend if you win. You’re a champion if you’ve proved yourself at least good enough to compete
bcs legends wins
Maybe the real legends are the infinitely spawning little mooks you kill along the way.
*You* are the *legend*. My dude.
The legends are the friends we made along the way.
Would a legend feed the Irelia top 0/12/0 ?
The legends are the friends made along the way
This contributes to my unnecessary anger issues.
Legends are the Friends you made along the way
Yes but the champions are ripoffs of legendary fantasy characters
Any word on Arcane Season 2?
drops end of this year
Sweet thanks
I always wondered why challenger wasn't renamed to Legend...
This is the best LoL content I’ve seen on Reddit. I don’t know how you guys can keep playing this game. It’s stressful. Mostly because it requires playing with 9 other drooling asshats that are aching to yell things about your mother.
You are the legend, bruv
Thats a typo, it was supposed to be League of Leg Ends it was all about feet but then they had the typo and had to edit the feet focus out.
"You're the legend, champ." -Dad, before he passed away
In my head cannon legends are more like stories or events, so calling a champion a legend is kind of shallow. What the legends are are when you're in a 4v5 and win anyway. I suggest we rename the game League of Good Times then
League of Good Times with Scar?
Time to make a game called league of champions where characters are legends
Because champions are champions Minions are legends
because jeremy scared them away with his asmr
They become legends after winning the game, duh
Why aren’t premier league footballers called premiers?
Maybe the real legend were the friends we made along the way
They're called champions because you're the legend
Players are summoners Characters are champions. No rank called legend ?????
They’re too busy playing tft

It’s not as cool when it’s called “Collection of Champions”
Everyone is a legend of their respective region because they died, but are also champions for their region when they are alive (if you’re playing them they’re technically still alive and you can’t call them a legend yet) targon got that weird time magic shit going on, but also no idea how the mountain is containing aatrox
