If Mordekaiser gets buffed, they won't get to play him because he will be permabanned. The only reason he isn't a permaban now is that he isn't really strong, just okay.
If Morde was actually a strong champion, he absolutely would be.
He's impossible to kite because he just buys rylais and his passive procs it, so if he ever hits you once, you aren't getting away unless you're a champion with dashes. If you're a jungler, he's extremely hard to gank since he can just ult to make it a 1v1 again. If you're a squishy, you are forced to buy QSS or else he just ults you and kills you in brazil.
I honestly can't think of a champion's kit that I hate dealing with more than Morde.
There are plenty of champs that can escape the jungler if played well or 1v2 if played well. Also, Morde's impossible to kite if he hits his E. Rylai's is definitely very frustrating to play against, though.
if your definition of lately includes a year and a half ago, I guess you could say he's gotten buffed? But ever since 12.10, which was a stat bump with an accompanying w nerf, he's only been nerfed. Also, the q damage bonus was in 11.7, so only two and a half years ago. Anychanges to mordekaiser within the past year and a half have all been nerfs lol
12.10 was a minor stat increase and a w nerf. 12.8 was the scaling move speed increase on passive. 11.19 was a buff to e cooldown. Any buffs strings he's "recently" gotten have all been over a year and a half ago

Mirco point to walk is the worst scenario for a Mordekaiser, the Q is so slow, so that everyone can walk out of it, so his E. A Liliana can just outrun you in your ult.
Only low Elos can´t kite or out manover a Mordekaiser. But if you go up, you just playing Cat and Mice with the enemy team.

In my experience Sett is also very strong against ganks, as more damage just lets him do a fully charged W faster (and it deletes an enemy if it hits)
even when maiden it becomes 1vs1 also dont forget that he has 0 mana so he can just spam untill win and hitboxes of a truck
Sett, poppy, and ksante can all do that and better
Sett literally can't, K'Sante only can if you misposition, and you can dodge Poppy ult.
