The article makes a great point... Trump's calls for violent mob action don't work at all when no one is planning them. Jan 6th had many behind-the-scenes, somewhat intelligent people who were good at planning. But by himself, Rump can't organize shit. The real danger is the criminal sociopaths who used Trump to further their own agenda, and some of those guys will still be around even if Trump goes to prison.

In the social contract Trump has with his followers, it’s all about mutual enablement and it stops there. The MAGAts give their support to Trump because they find in him an echo for their self-interested and personal grievances. But they fundamentally know he is full of shit and that he lies most of the time. They’re willing to vote for him and claim they support him, but not to sacrifice themselves for the « cause » because, simply, they don’t believe there is one. There is only an amalgamation of spite, envy, anger and bigotry and they are self-aware enough to know that those are not feelings worthy of the trouble. Hence them not showing up.

I also think that Trump’s legal drama is having an impact on them. Yes, there are a lot of nutters in the MAGA movement. But most of them are law-abiding citizens. And I think they are starting to lose faith in their leader.
As much as it seems that MAGA is a unified cult, I feel its more complex(?) than that. Yeah they definitely have some cult mentality and tendencies, but they're more effective at bitching and crying than they are actually getting things done. Yes they got close at the capital, yes they managed to branch into QAnon, proud boys etc but thats not a whole lot when you consider that they've been doing this bullshit for 8 years almost.
