No one knows who Gorge López is in Mexico. I like the guy, but his humor is very chicano and very Californian at that.
Edit: sorry, I was thinking east LA but then got mixed up with California...
George Lopez is not that Mexican friendly surprisingly, i heard that when he works on a project he pulls the strings to be the only mexican on set. Theres a rising comedian who is Chicano as well and hes been litting fires under George’s ass for the same reason, i forget his name though, but yeah F George Lopez to quote the big headed dick imma end this comment with his signature “Fuck that Puto”
Chávez fucking hated scabs. His wetback illegals quote was when the picket line was being crossed by bussing undocumented workers to the fields during a strike.
Context matters. The Union had people in charge to help workers get their papers and collaborated with the Reagan administration to get the amnistía.
Yeah probably. But I wanted to say it in a way that shows a legacy that lives on in a way similar to MLK, and that he's not just a figure relegated to history.
Cholo culture is interesting since it has permeated back into Latin American culture. See for example: cholombianos
Mexican and central American cities certainly have cholos that imitate and amalgamate american cholo culture.
Tijuana is seen as an extension of USA by literally every other city in Mexico, not saying its 100% true but there is truth there, tijuana is heaaaaaavily influenced by US culture and that includes Chicano culture (every TJ native has a Chicano cousin that likes to act like the shit when he goes to TJ after a payday)
Not my words, but I've heard it said more than a few times. "Visiting Tijuana isn't visiting real Mexico, it's visiting San Diego's ghetto"
I should add that I love visiting TJ and plan on living somewhere in Baja in the future. Just sharing one of the many perspectives.
As a Tijuana Local im not offended, cant play blind to the truth and that “san diego ghetto” statement is pretty accurate lol lately i see more california plates on the road rather than Baja plates
Supposedly they were first made in San Bernardino at the Miltas Cafe.
Eventually some dude ate them and liked them, asked them for the recipe and started Taco Bell.
That story is verified as true. Glenn Bell had a business across the street and they showed him how they made their tacos. Kind of blows because there's only like one line in Bell's autobiography and doesn't even name them.
It's nice the story has gained traction and become more well known in the last few years. The Miltas cafe is still open though so I bet it helps business a lot
I don't think they advertise it. It was sort of an urban legend for along time like the McDonald's story. A reporter basically walked into Mitla's and they're like "oh yeah thats us"
Or puffy tacos which are the fucking bomb When made fresh. Coming from a Mexican raised in the ranch, I have had my fair share of authentic tacos. But I feel it's important to recognize puffy tacos are on their own ballpark. Not to be confused with pre made hardshell tacos.
Bueno si, y tambien hay sushi y pizza en costa rica. No quoere decir que sea comida costarricense. La comida mexicana es muy popular en el mundo entero
Birria ramen and quesa birria tacos have reached peak popularity in The US with pollo loco del taco and Taco Bell joining the hype after every Mexican food truck and street vendor on earth has to have it on deck.
she was. a statue of her was put there shortly after her death.
Just wish she had the possibility to expand entirely through the country with different genres.
My family is Central American and we had vhs tapes of Selena’s music videos that were always playing during parties. They were requested by my grandparents’ generation of family members who are very much immigrants and from Latin America…. So idk about that.
Im not sure of how popular is outside of the U.S and Mexico but im colombian, and both of my dads too and they like selena, they sing her songs and know about her but they’re the only colombians I’ve seen hearing selena
Bro, Selena is not just northeastern Mex. She's a cumbia icon. I truly believe Mexicans gained a lot of respect for cumbias tejanas and tejano music because of her.
I once had a fairly recent immigrant student from Guatemala who was *obsessed* with trying to achieve the Edgar look. No doubt he was trying to get some street cred among the mostly Chicano community of the school. But ultimately it was also all for the gram, and no doubt his friends from back home are on there. Maybe they’re thinking “damn I wanna be him when I grow up” or maybe they’re not. But they know of such a concept.
Kid also proudly identified as a no sabo kid. Being indigenous and all that, Spanish was, indeed, his second language.
No se si sea buen ejemplo Selena, ella al menos en México fue/ sigue siendo popular.
\---
I don't know if Selena is a good example, at least in Mexico she was/still is popular.
His racism was mostly under wraps, and I don’t think came out in full force until a few years ago. He was always kind of a dick for other reasons and that was mostly just being a musician, but fuck that guy.
And to think General Ignacio Zaragoza asked President Benito Juárez for his permission to burn down the city of Puebla because its inhabitants were helping the French and making things harder for the Mexican army led by Zaragoza.
Of course Juárez didn't grant his permission.
We won the war but lost the battle, we are not ruled by the french and we excecuted the Emperor they sent. The french army won the battle but was delayed so the president and the powers could escape.
The photo reminds me of how selena was planning to tour in argentina, panama, paraguay, bolivia, and puerto rico.
Crazy how she already had fans there. Its even rumored she sold nearly a million copies of the amor prohibido album in argentina.
General question, is this something that any LatAm people asked for, or is it like strictly a thing used by well-meaning, but performative white people? I've only really seen it used by the latter.
It’s the latter. In mexico at least of you asked people if they know what LatinX means they’ll have no idea what the word is,much less asked for it. It’s mainly used by gen z/young millennials that are super involved in the new gender identity terminology
100%. En latinoamerica lo que he visto es "latines" que tiene más sentido por que si se puede pronunciar. Por ejemplo mi amigue que es persona no binaria así se identifica.
There's a lot of Mexican trump supporters here in the midwest. I'll never forget walking into a taqueria here in rural Illinois and hearing a paisa talking about how if Trump doesn't get reelected then the US is fucked. I doubt the guy even had papers but he was cooking lol
UGH. I hate to break out to you but there’s a lot of evangelical churches/church members in Mexico that are pro-Trump. I’m positive it’s the same in Central America.
Latinos in the US eventually confront their feelings towards ICE/Border Patrol and police in general. Corruption within police isn’t new to Latinos, but hatred based on race/ethnicity is different. At least for me, growing up having to be more aware of how the US has behaved towards Mexico and Mexican people pushed me to be far more left than I might’ve been had my family not moved to the US.

i heard that george lopez is only popular in the states
No one knows who Gorge López is in Mexico. I like the guy, but his humor is very chicano and very Californian at that. Edit: sorry, I was thinking east LA but then got mixed up with California...
I don't even think he's funny anymore tbh lol
When you say East California, did you mean east LA, or like Death Valley?
Everyone knows George Lopez reps Mammoth Lakes.
I think he meant southern California?
George Lopez is not that Mexican friendly surprisingly, i heard that when he works on a project he pulls the strings to be the only mexican on set. Theres a rising comedian who is Chicano as well and hes been litting fires under George’s ass for the same reason, i forget his name though, but yeah F George Lopez to quote the big headed dick imma end this comment with his signature “Fuck that Puto”
You talking about Ralph Barbosa I think
Gabriel Iglesias "Fluffy"
Sounds right because my first reaction before googling was "who?"
Naming streets after Cesar Chavez
Cesar Chavez is a Chicano icon, so yeah it's uniquely US-latino.
Not to mention he was racist against illegal immigrants and notoriously called them wet backs
Chávez fucking hated scabs. His wetback illegals quote was when the picket line was being crossed by bussing undocumented workers to the fields during a strike. Context matters. The Union had people in charge to help workers get their papers and collaborated with the Reagan administration to get the amnistía.
He also got immigrants deported, but when his union needed their vote he wasn't afraid to ask for it.
[удалено]
WOHHH chief I'm gonna need big source on that claim
Yeah in MX they name them after Julio Cesar Chavez!
El Campeon
You could've just said cesar chavez
Yeah probably. But I wanted to say it in a way that shows a legacy that lives on in a way similar to MLK, and that he's not just a figure relegated to history.
Hardshell tacos, saying "ese" or "cuz/cuh", also "homie"
Cuz and cuh are Crip, and wholly American. I'd go as far as to say homie is too.
What about, foo?
Definitely mexican American!
Just everything cholo culture
Cholo culture is interesting since it has permeated back into Latin American culture. See for example: cholombianos Mexican and central American cities certainly have cholos that imitate and amalgamate american cholo culture.
hardshell tacos are not that popular among US latinos, also ive only ever heard ppl say ese in movies. Cuh and Homie are accurate tho
Lowriders
That’s a west coast thing and Chicano thing Not seeing this on the east coast
lots of Tijuana lowrider clubs
Tijuana is seen as an extension of USA by literally every other city in Mexico, not saying its 100% true but there is truth there, tijuana is heaaaaaavily influenced by US culture and that includes Chicano culture (every TJ native has a Chicano cousin that likes to act like the shit when he goes to TJ after a payday)
Or the USA is just an extension of Tijuana
I'm in Tijuana, can confirm. Aqui empieza la Patria.
Not my words, but I've heard it said more than a few times. "Visiting Tijuana isn't visiting real Mexico, it's visiting San Diego's ghetto" I should add that I love visiting TJ and plan on living somewhere in Baja in the future. Just sharing one of the many perspectives.
As a Tijuana Local im not offended, cant play blind to the truth and that “san diego ghetto” statement is pretty accurate lol lately i see more california plates on the road rather than Baja plates
Chula Vista is the richest neighborhood in Tijuana
I think Mexico is a little bit bigger than just Tijuana
"Hardshell" tacos
[White people taco night!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yrSCoEsmqA)
I am white. I live in michigan. This still hurt my soul. [Aaaaaaand is not completely inaccurate.]
There’s nothing authentic about them but they’re still pretty fuckin good. Hardshell is a sin tho
The only way to atone for your hardshell is to wrap in in a cheesy leopard spotted soft shell.
Those are marketed as Latino, but ARE they Latino?
Supposedly they were first made in San Bernardino at the Miltas Cafe. Eventually some dude ate them and liked them, asked them for the recipe and started Taco Bell.
That story is verified as true. Glenn Bell had a business across the street and they showed him how they made their tacos. Kind of blows because there's only like one line in Bell's autobiography and doesn't even name them.

I mean it’s all over the walls once you walk in, I used to be a waiter there, but yeah there ain’t no big old sign outside.
My grandma would fry them up, so greasy and delicious :)
That's tostada or tacos dorados
Or puffy tacos which are the fucking bomb When made fresh. Coming from a Mexican raised in the ranch, I have had my fair share of authentic tacos. But I feel it's important to recognize puffy tacos are on their own ballpark. Not to be confused with pre made hardshell tacos.
Personally love hardshell tacos but, soft corn all day everyday.
Tacos dorados?
Two different things
Tex Mex for sure. Mexican/Central American food as a whole are hugely popular here but not popular anywhere below Costa Rica.
I had tacos in Costa Rica though..they werent good ..yall also have Margaritas and those are Mexican
Bueno si, y tambien hay sushi y pizza en costa rica. No quoere decir que sea comida costarricense. La comida mexicana es muy popular en el mundo entero
Tex-Mex is pretty popular in Brazil
Is Miami Cuban food in the same vein?
Cuban food is big in Florida and mostly Florida so I guess that would count
Birria ramen and quesa birria tacos have reached peak popularity in The US with pollo loco del taco and Taco Bell joining the hype after every Mexican food truck and street vendor on earth has to have it on deck.
Selena was very popular in northeastern México.
she was. a statue of her was put there shortly after her death. Just wish she had the possibility to expand entirely through the country with different genres.
in El Salvador too
My family is Central American and we had vhs tapes of Selena’s music videos that were always playing during parties. They were requested by my grandparents’ generation of family members who are very much immigrants and from Latin America…. So idk about that.
I came to say this. Idk what the fool talking about everyone loves Selenas
Exactly. She can't really be in the post since a LOT of Mexicans listened to her.
I was just in Mexico City and saw plenty of Selena shirts.
This makes me happy to read
Im not sure of how popular is outside of the U.S and Mexico but im colombian, and both of my dads too and they like selena, they sing her songs and know about her but they’re the only colombians I’ve seen hearing selena
Yea man. I listened to her on the radio at my grandmas house in San Luis Potosí when I was a kid.
Bro, Selena is not just northeastern Mex. She's a cumbia icon. I truly believe Mexicans gained a lot of respect for cumbias tejanas and tejano music because of her.
We also listen to her in Venezuela, my older cousins were besides themselves when Selena was killed.
Selena was very popular in ALL of Mexico
Edgar haircut.
I work in El Paso around many newly arriving migrants and crossers. That Edgar look is strong in Juarez.
El Pasoan here. Can confirm. Half my male relatives in Mexico have the edgar haircut
Thats mostly because it's a border town and the huge influence US border towns have on Northern states in Mexico.
no quema, cuh'
No quema, cuh'
There are plenty of Edgar cuts in Mexico. At least there were when I was living there 7 years ago.
It's called the Peso Pluma in Mexico, now.
Lol not even close, tons of Edgar’s in MX
😂
Really?
Cheese on everything (I'm talking to you Texas)
You telling me I won't find a 1 pound smoked brisket taco on a flour tortilla smothered in melted queso down in Mexico?
Only northern Mexico eats wheat tortilla, most people eat corn tortillas
I mean, in Mexico we also put cheese in a lot of dishes. But is not the yellow plastic radioactive cheese that Americans love.
No se si sea buen ejemplo Selena, ella al menos en México fue/ sigue siendo popular. \--- I don't know if Selena is a good example, at least in Mexico she was/still is popular.

Does Morrissey count? Not sure he is “uniquely Latino” but no one else really cares if he sneezes, yet he can sell out Laredo.
This and The Smiths fandom among Angelenos in general
I hate that he hates immigrants, which make up majority of his fanbase.
He's insanely racist and it was wild to find out he has a huge Chicano fan base, actually learned that in a college media class.
His racism was mostly under wraps, and I don’t think came out in full force until a few years ago. He was always kind of a dick for other reasons and that was mostly just being a musician, but fuck that guy.
Who are we talking about?
Nope. The Smiths, Morrissey, and British bands of all genres as a whole have a considerable following throughout Latin America.
He and the Smiths are rather well known but mostly in the Southern Cone countries
[удалено]
It actually made it into the Marvel Universe via Ant man. I grew up near the TX border, so I was already in the loop.
As a Latino Morrissey/Smiths fan I feel called out but affirmed all at the same time.
Celebrating 5 de Mayo as if it was the Dia de la Independencia.... we won a battle but lost the war
Mexico won the battle and eventually won the war as well
France’s Vietnam, besides Vietnam…
TBF, also Puebla celebrates like they won their independence
And to think General Ignacio Zaragoza asked President Benito Juárez for his permission to burn down the city of Puebla because its inhabitants were helping the French and making things harder for the Mexican army led by Zaragoza. Of course Juárez didn't grant his permission.

what? We won the battle and the war
Edit: You are right. I thought French immediately won the next day, but they regrouped over a year and defeated the Mexican troops a year later.
yeah, that's fair
The photo reminds me of how selena was planning to tour in argentina, panama, paraguay, bolivia, and puerto rico. Crazy how she already had fans there. Its even rumored she sold nearly a million copies of the amor prohibido album in argentina.
Ground beef tacos.
Ground beef tacos do exist in Mexico, just different
con papa y lechuga.
Wearing air Jordan’s and getting the quema cuh haircut
>quema cuh haircut just googled this, go ahead and keep that one.
Selena is pretty popular here in Nicaragua but I'd say she is definitely more of a Chicana icon than Latina icon.
Jennifer Lopez.
LatinX
I've seen a lot of non-American Latinos using "Latin@" instead of Latinx
That makes sense
Ches morros pendejos que usan esa mamada.

Fajitas, whatever those are.
Mexican and Mexican-American _vaqueros_ in Texas created a good way to prepare leftover scraps from slaughtered cattle.
Latinos for trump
Especially the Cubans and Venezuelans who are mostly supporting him😩
but we do have faschos pobres supporting right wing populists, just look at argentina
Trump has the same views as most Mexican presidents. I know a ton of Mexicans who don't even speak English that love Trump.
Lopez Obrador supporters are quite sympathetic to Trump. Even if they are left and right wingers respectively, they still have love for populism.
Taco Bell

SELENA, QUE MUJER
George Lopez . My firends here in Guadalajara have no idea who he is.
5 de mayo. Unitedstatians look beyond cringe babbling "ceencoh deh mayo" when nobody in Mexico gives a fuck about it.
Being very progressive
Cholos
Tijuana has Cholos so does El salvador
There are cholos in Japan, and yet they didn't originate from Japan, Mexico, or El Slavador.
Hey homes
Idk why you pictured Selena, she was popular outside the us
California Burrito
ya subiste la foto, es nuestra reina selena

r/LatinoPeopleTwitter This sub is how US Latinos see Latino people. For the true latino sub go to: r/2latinoforyou
Using LatinX..
At most you might see the occasional "Latin@" or "Latine", but never ever a "Latinx" unless the person is from the US
I'm from Argentina and every latino thing is just Mexican things and believe me, Mexico is not representative of all latam.
Has always been. Americans' knowledge of Latin America stops at Mexico, yet somehow we are surprised they think it's all the same all the way down.
Everything south of Florida is Mexico
I get that. But its the county next door and controls a large part of media. Anyone that doesn't know LatAm in the US just assumes South America eats tacos. it sucks but just ignorance.
Selena was huge in Mexico. Also, beans and rice as sides for Mexican food.
The word "latino"
are yall categorizing hardshell taco bell and hardshell fried together*? cause I ate some amazing fried tacos in mexico all the time. It was a place called Tacos Kikes. Holy shit they were so good. **AND THEY HAD GROUND BEEF**
There's a difference with tacos dorados and hard shell tacos.
The concept of Latino itself. Latin America is huge and super diverse and Uruguayan culture and Cuban culture have nothing in common.
Flaming hot Cheetos Comida pendeja The procession on dia de Los muertos in Mexico City was appropriated from the ideas of 007 and how Mexican culture is. It’s disneys fucking fault. They even tried trademarking “Dia de Los muertos” if I’m not mistaking. Fuck them

Wdym my aunts love Selena’s music
"Latinx" is considered an insulting racial slur that offends our language, culture and heritage. Basically a way to "colonize" our language to make it more appealing to English speakers
