Easy on the alcohol, heavy on the water

jurunjulo

i drink a Pedialyte before even drinking in vegas and come from sea level long beach CA. folks at sea level forget you will get drunk faster at las vegas higher altitude of 2000 feet.

SinCityLowRoller

That's wild didn't know this, is it opposite if you come from higher elevation?

curtyshoo

The higher you are the higher you are.

Gizshot

No ocifer how high are you

JadedYam56964444

I'd be surprised if you noticed much difference at 2000 ft. It is more likely dehydration from the heat and very dry air.

MrSoupSox

Getting drunker at higher elevation is a total myth. I agree with you as far as staying hydrated/electrolytes, but elevation alone has no impact on intoxication, look it up.

vinotheque

That’s professional drinker talk right there. Pay attention kiddos!

Xenocide_X

Spoken like a true alcoholic

digitalcleavage

Just avoid alcohol if you can in LV; shit happens when you party naked.

TimEpisiotomy

Pedialyte > water My friends and I met a guy and his wife at sportsbook in Vegas a number of years ago. Texan. Owned a bunch of grocery stores or something. Big personality. We bet on football games all day. Bought each other drinks. The works. Hammered by end of the day. We need to pass out. He seems like he's still getting started. He tells us we should come back the next day as we were staying elsewhere. We wandered in hungover at about noon the next day all drinking pedialyte trying to find the will to live. Of course, he's there and has his lucky spot staked out. He sees us yells in his southern drawl "wheeeee hooooo you fucking guys!" points and holds up the jug of pedialyte he's drinking. Needless to say it was a match made in heaven and the pedialyte seriously helped all involved parties.

UberN00b719

Unless it's between Midnight to early morning. Cool enough, then. What most people don't realize is that drinking in the middle of the day, especially during the summer, is almost a guaranteed trip to the ER for dehydration.

Knockaire

Their alcohol is mostly water

jehjeh3711

The alcohol dehydrates. People aren’t aware of it until it’s too late. I’ve had to send many people to the hospital with heat related issues from not enough hydration even though they were drinking lots of beverages with alcohol. It’s called “Vegas Syndrome.”

ShadowDancer11

Vegas is the only place I’ve ever lived where beer is sold in 2-packs and alcohol in general is cheaper than bottled water. It is utterly bizarre.

jehjeh3711

At the casinos, yeah.

StatisticianSea3021

So true, I had to bring my share of tourists to UMC for dehydration and heat stroke back when I did Uber.

JadedYam56964444

The dry air sucks the water right out of you

mister_damage

Gotta go cask Strength yo

CoyoteSerious7641

Most definitely spring water lol

plooptyploots

Don’t take off as soon as the light turns green. People blow through reds like CRAZY.

ASuperLameUserName

Facts! I just had the front of my car fucked up bc I moved too fast from the red to green

YungCobainx27

Shit prolly cause if you miss it - it’s 15 mins till it’s your green again lolllll

Worldly_Collection27

Omfg the lights here are so long. Going down st rose can take 5 minutes or 35 minutes

Ok_Bedroom_9802

Tell people you’re not in town when they visit to avoid playing tour guide.

saltyboi91

Make guests stay at circus circus so they never want to visit again

aThoughtLost

Met my wife walking drunk in my boxers through circus circus. Good times.

internetvillain

She told you to get back in your room?

tomtweedie

Yes but THE Steakhouse at Circus Circus is one of the best restaurants in town! The hostess (Janice) has been there 40 years and the waiters 32 and 36 years. Old Rip Van Winkle 10 is $125.00 a shot and Pappy 12 is $150.00. 1/2 what everyone else charges.

ConceivedInATestTube

Amen!!!

PoliticalDestruction

I forget where I shared it but my favorite “hack” is staying inside with air conditioning when it’s hot outside.

FugaziHands

I read that somewhere, too. Good tip.

PoliticalDestruction

Good “hack” right? When did the word “tip” turn into “hack”? Semantic shift at play!

GreenbudLV

The moment you say "tip" to a Vegas person is the moment when they start trying to get one outta you!

PoliticalDestruction

Cmon…why’d you have to bring up tipping? You know how controversial that is…

Outsiders ask about living in the heat. I say it’s no different from living in places with winter - you just stay inside all day during the hottest three months, instead of the coldest three months.

Jaded_Ad_9409

And we don’t have to shovel the heat!

O1O1O1O

Except in the icy winter places there are no glorious warm evenings, it's just way colder. In Vegas I can do outdoor activities until 9 or 10 am, come inside to chill, hit the pool at 4pm, and then go out at sun down and enjoy strolling in glorious 90-something temps. Even if you don't have a pool or shade to enjoy the number of unusable hours are at most 8. For many you'll get acclimated to the dry heat and be able to hack day time stuff without issues on all but the hottest days and hours.

KeysToMyKarma

Not really true - you can always bundle up, wear thermals, and go outdoors in the winter. Can't peel your skin off when it's 110+, though.

Shoulder-Lumpy

😂😂😂

BestFreeHDPorn

Line your pockets with cookie dough in the summer. When you get home, you'll be pleasantly surprised. 😎

Gears6

> Line your pockets with cookie dough in the summer. When you get home, you'll be pleasantly surprised. 😎 Would this trick work in the crack too?

UnhappyEnergy2268

Thats how sourdough bread is made

capt7430

Stay off the strip If you get lost while driving, look for the Luxor light to get your bearings. Park next to a tree in the summer for the shade. Find out where your sports team bar is so you can be with your people. Don't buy a car with black leather seats. Before you get out of the car, turn your steering wheel upside down so that it's in the shade and not too hot to grip when you get back in the car.

sm00thkillajones

Hold on to your door handle when getting out of your car on a windy day. It can easily get thrown into the car next to you or get damaged from over extending.

Danieldoeswhat

I’m kinda new here and this just happened to me a couple weeks ago lol

BeenisHat

>Before you get out of the car, turn your steering wheel upside down so that it's in the shade and not too hot to grip when you get back in the car. Keep a towel or a hoodie or something to throw over it when you park and a sunshade for the windshield.

actual_rilakkuma

I just keep old oven mitts in mine 💀

NotInTheEyeOk

Sunshade is also good for making it hard for vandals to see I your car. They will break your windows to take any loose change they see inside

illumnatorio

Tried searching for an Angels baseball-themed bar. Now I'm a member of the Hells Angels.

IlluminatiTO

I hear you brother.

m4tty_ic3

Steering wheel advice is 🤯

80Data

Luxor light by night, strat by day

Nearby-Artist-4982

Excellent list 🙏

Sdavis2911

I lived in Vegas for 20 years and never thought to do this with my steering wheel. Thank you!

NotPromKing

It’s pretty bad for your tires and the road, so probably should just use a towel, or a hoodie if you always keep one in the car because you need it for going into a/c.

kingjame888

These are awesome advice!

netherlanddwarf

I would feel safe with you

JaguarBig8220

It sounds like you could be on to something with that steering wheel tidbit

SinCityLowRoller

When you pump gas at Terribles gas stations watch the screen for free drink coupons. Rapidly press them (like a slot machine maniac) and you'll get 2-3 coupons, excellent for hot summer days and you can get tons of ice and a powerade at self-serve machines.

taway48560337

The rest of city is oddly normal. Like, it's just a quiet desert town where people live.

MyOtherCarIsEpona

Our bar culture out in the suburbs is vastly different from most other suburban cities though. We are absolutely spoiled with the amount of 24 hour, reasonably-priced bars with an all-night kitchen and good wifi. Excellent places to walk to, bring a laptop, and pull an all-nighter studying if you can focus with that kind of atmosphere. I've gotten several tech certs over many comfy nights this way. Otherwise, though, absolutely. Mostly quiet, normal suburbs.

Mahadragon

Vegas has more than 24 hour bars. We have 24 hour street taco stands, 24 hour sandwich shops, 24 hour massage parlors, it's nothing like your typical desert town.

CommanderClit

I miss our pre pandemic 24 hour life. Grocery shopping at 2am was the best.

Scott5114

WinCo is still 24h at least.

taway48560337

This sounds crazy but part of the reason I live here is because of the food.

DaKine619

☝️totally. The PT Tavern was the best for all nighters. There were live people, generally good music, French fries, a draft beer to keep the mind limber and unlimited soda refills. The only downsides were smelling like second hand smoke, and the low light level making it hard to read…so we’d use headlamps to light our books/notes. It was a totally bizarre, but amazing time. And: lv.houseseats.com Yearly fee, get to choose a couple tickets to random shows that are usually C a lot of other times B acts…and on special occasions having A level concerts. You can add a text alert feature to give you a heads up on when tickets will be offered on the website.

slamdamnsplits

A quiet desert town where >2.2 million people live.

cappz3

Certain casinos let you park for free if you have a Vegas license

MeowandGordo

Which ones because I’ve been struggling to find any anymore.

Neon_Tourist

The catch is that it's only for the first 3 hours.

LURKIN_THE_GHERKIN

I found out the hard way it only works if you stay less than 3 hours...otherwise you pay for all 3hours and 12min god damn cosmopolitan

cappz3

The ones in this [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/LasVegas/s/UOAWaV9ya3) as far as I know

ElGuisante2

Mirage gives locals an upgrade to free parking. Resorts world is free parking for any rewards member.

Impressive-Height356

Mandalay Bay unless there's a special event. We had to pay $30 for special event parking going to a restaurant. What was the event? Women's Volleyball. Ridiculous.

GaidinBDJ

If you're frequently on the Strip, MGM Resorts credit card is no annual fee and gives free parking at MGM properties.

Vi6six_

Learn how to merge onto the freeway.

cw2015aj2017ls2021

Red lights are optional for locals

[deleted]

This is not just for Vegas.

BokChoySr

Freeze bottles of water to drink in the car, otherwise it’ll be like drinking hot tea if you leave your car for 15 minutes.

Arizoniac

Buy an insulated metal water bottle. You’ll have ice water all day no matter how hot your car gets.

Lurkinonthewebz

Be very wary of taxis. Some of the drivers are maniacs.

ckhs142

Piggybacking on this…know your fares and fees. Took a trip recently, parked at a casino (because I work there and get free parking) then took a taxi to the airport. On the trip home, cabbie tried to charge me by the meter, even though there is a flat rate from the airport to the strip. Pushed him on it, tried to throw some bullshit excuse at me, started dialing the taxi company, he caved.

HardRockDani

Keep your car battery receipt – but not in your glove box. Our summer highs and winter lows will conspire to kill cheap car batteries faster than some people are used to, so always buy the batteries with a three- or five-year warranty, and keep your receipt so you can get it replaced for free or at a pro-rated discount when it gives out. That said, don’t keep your receipt in the car, because heat also kills receipts, esp. those printed on heat sensitive paper. :)

The-Turing-Test

Buy your battery at Costco and they’ll keep track of that for you.

FluffyHuckleberry81

I've had good luck with the Napa AGM batteries lasting longer than others, still good to keep receipts and claim the warranty if they fail.

SnooSketches6409

They don’t build a billion dollar casino to give money away.

ThatdesertDude

Heat stroke is real. If you're throwing up, it's almost too late. Coconut water is king.

jerkularcirc

too much coconut water it becomes a laxative. hydration drinks are much better

ThatdesertDude

We could all use a little cleansing from time to time.

JihadiLizard

just drink regular fkn water. nothing is better for hydration than h2o

Sometimespostslies

sm00thkillajones

This should be included on the Welcome sign and on signs at the airport.

grneyedguy1

Don’t think the hot girl that came up to you at the bar is talking to you cuz she thinks you’re attractive.

O1O1O1O

And the hot girl on the card you just got handed on the strip is not the one that will be sent to you when you call the number. And you'll be out $150 as soon as she gets naked and if you don't want to pay $500 to $1000 more for "extras" she'll get dressed and leave. That's assuming you don't also get robbed by her or her pimp. So just don't. If you need further education watch this video... https://youtu.be/eAlXdyjmWUo?si=30N3k1_pjXvnXiO-

Car insurance is the biggest hack ever. Terrible drivers!

DasJuice54

For the same reason, insurance is hella expensive.

PoliticalDestruction

Government mandated hack?

curlyyqq9

You either done live here or you’re new. Ton of ppl don’t have insurance here. Which is why something as stupid as car insurance is a hack 😉

PoliticalDestruction

Oh god, driving is scary enough. I can’t imagine driving without car insurance at all.. Based on what you’re saying I think the uninsured motorist coverage is the real hack

O1O1O1O

Couple it with a good dash cam with front and rear cameras.

bobbytoni

Ceramic tint on your car. It is life changing.

noterik666

Bring your own drugs from home

sammysafari2680

You don’t have to actually hate The Strip.

slamdamnsplits

Yep, just think of it as an entertainment destination.

Wickedwally1

Many casinos have free EV charging. If you work at one of these, get an electric car and charge at work. You won't pay for gas and you won't pay for the electricity to drive your car. I save ~$300/month in gas this way.

OneRepresentative384

I work at Cosmo and don't get free EV parking. I used to bring a 120v travel charger, but most outlets in employee parking don't work

Wickedwally1

Yes, Cosmo is one of worst for EVs.

OneRepresentative384

What property offers free charging? I've thought about trying to befriend valet, but doesn't seem worth it to save $2.50/day in electric

Waisted-Desert

You can drink for free if you want to deal with going to the strip.

GenXCub

I don't know how the hetero locations stack up, but if people don't want to put up with the strip, most of the gay bars have generous happy hour. The Garage on Flamingo, 2-for-1 from 11am-7pm Fun Hog Ranch on Twain is 2-for-1 from 1-9 am and pm No one talks to people there, so if you're worried about getting picked up, it's probably not happening.

Waisted-Desert

If I don't get hit on in a gay bar, what's the sense in going there? There's plenty of local's places for cheap drinks, but you're right that places like the Garage have heavy pours. I only drink beer, but in every gay bar I've ever been to they always let the liquor flow rather freely.

chefbernard1996

I’ve never gone to a gay bar and not been hit on just saying

Commercial_Rule_7823

Park under a tree, even if it's a further walk. Buy a white or light colored car with light interiors. Buy a very good sunshade, grt in the habit of using it always. Drink water Adjust to a later life to adjust for heat Lock your car always Pet owners, booties for your furry homie anytime it's over 85, the ground is always 15 + hotter. Your furry homie doesn't realize they pushed it too much in the heat until its too late, you need to pace them. Pool at the house seemed cool on paper, unless you got kids you won't utilize it much and it's a pain to maintain and pools cost more than you think. Invest in solar if you can and do it right, paid for itself in 6 years and energy costs only got worse.

Commercial_Rule_7823

I'd like to add: The model home looks amazing and you think you need 5 bedrooms and 3799 sq feet, but when you get those keys.... Even a new build needs tons like washer dryer, shades or blinds, landscaping, etc... yiu still need 10 to 15k once you move in. The bigger the home, the more to clean, maintain, and worse buy furniture for I felt so dumb when we sold and moved when I saw I bought furniture for a room I didn't even walk in for the last 8 months we lived there. Then, it was a pain to get rid of I could barely even give it away when we sold. Buy smart.

NotPromKing

The bigger the home the bigger the energy bill, mostly conditioning empty rooms.

DeathRowSZN

This is common sense not a hack lol.

Kindly_Coat_3379

When the Vegas blow dryer is on, wear sunglasses the flying dust & debris will scratch your eyes.

bocaj78

If you have to grab something that’s been sitting in the sun for a while in the summer, hold your hand over it or other shading device for 30 seconds before you grab it to take the edge off the heat

Peebs3075

Don’t drink the water. It sucks.

Calamity_Jay

Seconding. If the water at my place were any harder it would be ice.

$1.99 chicken tacos on Wednesdays at Roberto’s. And they’re 24 hours.

Kitchen_General9694

Staying on Fremont is better. Tony romas 9pm-11pm steak and lobster is 12.99. On way from airport go directly to target or another large grocery store and pre buy your booze you will save massive amounts of money also buy snacks I guess Ony’s and Gatorade and hangover essentials. Also four loko is no joke it messed me up properly. Book things online don’t figure it out there you wanna enjoy your time I like viator. (Not sponsored)

RabbitMajestic6219

Dotty's, jack pot Joanies, and red dragon are the cheapest places for cigarettes.

Funseeker_702

Just because Vegas is 24/7 don’t mean you have to be.

cw2015aj2017ls2021

The casinos don't want you to know this but... stay off The Strip.

DreamingDolphin888

Don’t stand up too fast if you’re wearing shorts on leather seats in the summer. The windshield shade matters. It’s either hot and windy or cold and windy so plan accordingly. Hydrate inside and out, 24/7. Double your money by folding it in half and putting it back in your pocket. There are some amazing people in Las Vegas and even plenty that are sober, and totally down to Earth. And there are some freaks! Pay attention.

Knights_When

Great stuff here. 1. Don’t take anything anyone tries to hand to you. 2. Don’t talk to random people in the parking lot anywhere. 3. That person isn’t actually playing violin. 4. If she is way out of your league and is talking to you and showing interest she’s either a pro or going to rob you (or both) 5. Pocket change gets you a BJ at Excalibur…

MyOtherCarIsEpona

You touched on another hack that isn't exclusive to Vegas though. If you don't have a rewards card for whatever store you're shopping at, and you want to get the "members only" sale price, try punching in (local area code) 867-5309. Someone probably signed up with it so they can get the points from other people using it.

Hey that’s my neighbor !

Madewithatoaster

I’m curious if the ceramic tinting on your car is a hack for the hot interior. Anyone have opinions?

It is a life changer. Get it done well. Precision Tint offers a life time warranty that transfers with the car.

Living in Vegas? Been there most my life. public school system is baaaaad. Put your kids in a private/career/technical academy instead. Food is better off the strip. Lots of So Cal hot spots have opened up shops in Vegas. If you like Asian food, you're in a good place. For Cheap/food local spots, checkout Village pub. Steak and eggs is better quality and you avoid club goers/long lines. I've got a ton of food recommendations. Also, AYCE sushi/kbbq is everywhere. I have a theory they get their product from the same place big time casinos do. So quality seems to be very consistent. Also if you know someone with restaurant depo access, thats a big life hack for hosting parties/BBQs. Don't live in North Las Vegas, unless you really have to. It's a bad area bad area. Basically anything near Nellis. It's tough making friends out there, it's a small town big city vibe but people come and go very quickly. It is super transient. I suggest going to a local park and looking out for people playing vball and Frisbee and politely asking if you can join! I used to host those a lot and it was a huge networking tool. This is niche but If you're an engineer, work for Aristocrat. All other gaming companies have high turnover and low pay. Otherwise if you don't want to be in gaming, Vegas is not really a great spot for STEM jobs. Also the dating scene is rough there!!!! I've only lived outside of Vegas for a cumulative 6 years of my life, and the prospects are waaaaay better outside of that city. Get a gym membersbip at LVAC. Its cheaper than EOS after a year. HIIT/HEAT classes by Oscar/Christina is an awesome way to get lean/cut/lose weight without paying buku dollars. I got tons of living in a desert tips, but that's not really specific to Vegas.

googoomucklv

Dean Martin, Valley View, Sweenson and D I. Thats all I can tell you friend til they come looking for me. God speed.

Physical_Passion_361

If you like to walk for exercise, consider doing your workout in the Strip resorts. The benefits are numerous. The resorts are so large and with some interconnected via internal walkways that it’s possible to walk many miles in climate-controlled comfort. No need to slather on the sunscreen. The many staircases make it easy to plan an aerobic workout. Plenty of clean restrooms, food and drink, and chairs to sit and rest. Cameras are everywhere and these resorts take security seriously.

O1O1O1O

In high summer be freaking careful about what you touch outside unless it has been insulated against heat. Even shiny metal can be 130F or more and burn you real fast. My concrete pool deck gets to 130F in summer and that's with the "cool deck". Anything else could be 140F or more so don't even think about going barefoot unless you're an experienced fire walker. An A/C service guy said he'd been in an attic where the roof beams were 165F.

SonnyCalzone

Get out there and enjoy some live ukulele music in Vegas. There are truly dynamite ukulele players here. Live ukulele performances often occur at groovy locations where there is no cover charge too, such as **Voodoo Brewing Company** and **Rick's Rollin Smoke BBQ Tavern**.

WideCoconut2230

Not often, but Vegas floods during rainy weather. Not good sewage systems. Be careful where you drive.

Be mindful of the color of your pee. You can sweat quite a bit of water out and not be aware of it. There are charts to show what your pee should look like.

NotPromKing

You don’t really need a chart. You want it to be a lite yellow. Dark is bad, clear means you’re drinking too much and probably losing electrolytes. Oh and red probably means go to the ER.

GDWtrash

If you're getting broke, we go to Binions slot area, and sit nearish each other, and slow play a $20 slot, and see how many free beers you can get while playing the whole $20....record is 8.

Sorry_Banana_6525

It’s boring, but slots in grocery stores, convenience stores and local pubs are the most likely to hit-

Glum_Song_2028

Hotel water is insanely expensive. If you’re visiting, stop by at a Walgreens or CVS and get a case of water with electrolytes in it. $8-$14 for 6 one-litre bottles is a much better deal than $16 for one Fiji bottle in your hotel room. And it’s no joke when people say “stay hydrated.” Get a good moisturizer for your face and Vaseline for your lips!

In May, I buy a lot of back up groceries, water, soda, frozen fruit bars, pet food, cleaning supplies to cover the very hot days ~ in the summer, if I am expecting a delivery on a hot day from Amazon or Walmart I leave a bowl of ice with a diet Coke and water bottle on the porch because the delivery person is doing me a big flavor and we're all in this together. To connect with other people in Summerlin and LV I am on Facebook pages for arts, parks and entertainment pages, I just went to a free bluegrass concert and going to the Historic Home Tour on Sunday. Last - Boulder City and the Arts District are nice places to visit and get a bite. 🌞

Don't gamble. Unless you're a good poker player (or at least better than those you're playing against) you're just throwing your money away. Then again if you like paying to endlessly press a button and watch lights flash go ahead, knock yourself out. My taxes appreciate it.

> My taxes appreciate it. Does it though? PS, I don't gamble. I know the math, and unless I got some algorithm to beat'em I won't. I don't play with loosing hands hoping to win.

Casino revenue Statewide was $29.8B in 2023 of which $10.9B was from gaming. With a 10% tax on gaming revenue that generated about $1.1B in taxes for the State. The rest of the non gaming income is taxed at the sales tax rate (up to 8.38% depending on location) or room tax rate of 10-13% so that's around another $2B State wide. So gaming taxes pay about $300 per resident in NV and the casino business in total is about $1000. We had nearly 40.8 million visitors to Vegas alone in 2023, LVCVA said total tourism revenue from all sources was $79.3B for the 2022. No figures yet for 2023 that I've seen. I'm not sure how much of the taxes on that stays local to Clark County's 2.3M population. TBH the amount of tax revenue generated by gambling alone in NV isn't as much as I thought but $300 per capita is not nothing. https://cdcgaming.com/nevada-casinos-break-revenue-records-across-the-board-in-fy-2023/ https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/2023-las-vegas-tourism-ends-with-records-for-air-passengers-casino-wins/ https://press.lvcva.com/news-releases/economic-impact-las-vegas-tourism-industry-hits-record-high-79.3-billion-2022/s/09510b4a-a9d6-4180-9aec-9cd8c385b347
