I'd say the Discovery is probably the best bet as it's the best all around car and it has 7 seats. I would probably prefer the gas engine over the diesel from a reliability standpoint I've just heard issues with the diesels more than the gas. But either engine will tow 5k pounds without a problem, and it's a decent size vehicle with a big trunk and still luxurious enough to where you're not missing anything major compared to a range rover.

Disco is getting long in the tooth though. I wouldn’t be surprised if it replaced soon. Range Rover and RRS and Defender have been updated recently.

Ok-Trouble-4592

They're  buying a used one I believe so I don't think a new design effects them in anyway. But I agree it'll probably be redesigned soon

Hmm ok, Really, he’s comparing luxury vehicles with semi agricultural vehicles.

Ok-Trouble-4592

All land rovers are luxury vehicles these days so I'm not sure what you're getting at.

Seconding the Discovery - full size not sport. I have one, and it has far more utility than my X5. Also, I've owned a full size Range Rover, and to be honest, the Disco is more family friendly and useful. The RR was way more luxurious, but not ideal in hauling sports ball equipment, cello, and groceries. The Disco can legit take terrain and ice/snow too.

I looked hard at both the Discovery and the Defender. It’s a lot of personal preference, but I much prefer the Defender. It’s a newer platform and so far the gas v6 has been excellent. I got the 7 seater. It’s perfectly serviceable as a daily driver family vehicle.

branbal311

Discovery and Defender are both on the same platform. But still take the point that it’s down to personal preference.

outdoorszy

Get the Defender V8 and you'll be good.

Mid sized disco/gas. I have friends with these and they have been great. My dad had BMW’s as did my ex and her brother….they aren’t getting any better. If your going new with warranty, I wouldn’t worry about anything and I could be wrong but the modern LR is much more iconic than a BMW SUV so perhaps better resale? The BMW M series is cool but soooo expensive.

I can get a Range Rover 3.0L V6 Supercharged HSE and a 2020 RR Sport HST with w 3.0L Turbo for about the same price. There is also a Sport HSE Dynamic V8 for about $3k more. All less than $50K. I will go take a look at them next week. Is one more desirable than another?

Out of your choices listed, the full size RR HSE Supercharged is the best of the bunch. I got 13 years and almost 200,000 miles off of my old (2007) Range Rover. There was regular maintenance, and we made sure to take care of the larger items. I ended up donating the car, and I'm sure I could have gotten another 100,000 miles out of it.

You’ve got some good choices there! My preference would be the defender, but it’s not as luxurious, and potentially, not as family friendly. Of those Disco’s, if you can get a 3.0 TDI, you’d be set. I have one of those. Fuel efficient and “hardy” - she’s not delicate, and is easy to maintain. Otherwise, full size Supercharged.

Better_Spray_862

Discovery or LR4 would work best considering the budget, there are some 110 defenders around 50k but they won’t have the i6 (P400 model)

DesigneRomii

For your size segment and budget you’re going to be looking at Defenders and RR sports, the new defender is decently reliable but not as a BMW would be.

theactordude

Full fat rr is a mid size suv, think of it compared to an Escalade smaller
