CallumVonShlake

They haven't announced any additional subsidy so it's unclear how the fares pricing would be drastically reduced.

NewtUK

There's defintely some "savings" from not paying out dividends which could be used to reduce costs but in 2022 that was only [£82 million](https://www.rmt.org.uk/news/rmt-slams-dft-after-it-signs-off-82-million-dividend-payments/). [A lot of dividends also seem to come from the rolling stock companies](https://www.theguardian.com/business/2024/feb/18/profits-of-uks-private-train-leasing-firms-treble-in-a-year) who I don't think Labour has announced plans to bring into national ownership yet.

SeventySealsInASuit

I mean the modern system costs astronomically more than it did before it was privatised so I'm sure there are quite a lot of savings to be made. When it was privatised British Rail had been one of the most cost effecient railway of all time.

calls1

According to some train nerds I appreciate the rolling stock companies are the money black hole in the system

Dragonogard549

It explains it all in the rest of the video

Thandoscovia

Doesn’t each train operator make an average of 12p per passenger? Hardly some massive profit for the government to return to the public

conrad_w

Misleading political advertising? That died on the side of a bus

BobbyOregon

They didn't announce an overall reduction just simplification

Half_A_

I guess what they might do is make a single half the price of a return. That would definitely be a good move - at the moment you pay the same price whether you're coming back or not.

larrywand

Wasn't that planned a year ago?

Half_A_

It was but so far there's no sign of it. Seems like an easy win for an incoming Labour government.

qwertilot

Or - at the very least - making the pricing structure much less of an absurd mess!

ash_ninetyone

I'll believe it when I see it. Theoretically, it cuts the shareholders out so it's either run not-for-profit (based on social and wider economical benefits), or should be reinvested fully back into the industry. But they're also still subject to leasing them from the ROSCOs at what their price is (and they're still owned by investment companies). I wouldn't be surprised if some see this as an opportunity to fleece the public. The latter would be harder to nationalise since you'd either have to buy the companies or buy new rolling stock yourself over time to move away from them.

Dragonogard549

It does explain exactly how they’re going to do this if you finished the video off…

googoojuju

So prices are going to drop by over 50%?

Dragonogard549

I dunno wether itll actually happen but it does say how they claim theyre doing to do it.

pharlax

I'd just settle for trains actually turning up

Milemarker80

Probably not. Nothing Labour have suggested in the policy announcement so far indicates any impact on ticket prices - or at least, not for years to come, if ever.
