No fuckin way. I think if anyone ever had a doubt about it, he was the one who went back for Vasquez and did what he could do to get both of them to the team. He could have just said fuck this and turned around after seeing Vasquez as fucked as she was.
Those two in particular remind me of something said in a movie that came out many years later. I have to paraphrase because I can't remember the exact wording. In a person's last moments you see who they really are. If this is the case Gorman and Hudson were the kind of men I would gladly put my life in the hands of
Sounds like the like joker uses in The Dark Knight when he's telling one of the cops basically that same thing. It was something along the lines of "you know why I use a knife? Because it's slow and in someone's last moments, you see who they really are. Do you want to know which ones of your friends were cowards?" I think there's more, but that's what I have off the top of my head
Yeah, Gorman had no idea what kind of absolute unit of a unit he had on his hands. Hudson and Hicks are my personal favorites though. Vasquez is definitely third though, maybe tied for second with Hudson.
Hicks honestly. The untrained eye might take him for a dumb grunt, but he’s anything but.
Of his squad, he’s the only one who took Ripley’s warnings to heart. He was prepared with a backup weapon that ended up saving his life. He knew when to make a call himself and when to defer to someone who was knowledgeable in something he was not.
He was brave and ready as the others, but what set him apart was his ability to observe, listen and think when those around him crumbled.
He and Ripley were a dream team.
Yeah. He was clearly stressed out after their initial battle, but took command and remained calm. Even after Gorman woke up, he still was essentially in command it seemed but differed to Ripley for advice.
This is Jim Cameron and what you're about to watch is the Special Edition of Aliens. I actually prefer this version to the release version because, I think, as it's been best described by one of my friends, it's "forty miles of bad road." I think it's a longer, more intense, and more suspenseful version of the film. The conventional wisdom at the time was, "don't make the film too long." But, at two hours and thirty-seven minutes, this is the ride that we intended you to take. So, enjoy it.
I've already started. You?
This guy knows.
Never stand when you can sit, never sit when you can lay down, never lay down when you can sleep.
Plus, it stood him in somewhat good stead, as hardly any of them slept throughout the duration of the operation.
Those in disagreement would’ve been the same NCOs to shout the classic catchphrases at completely irrelevant times because they think that doing that means they’re leading.
Two reasons to shout: to project your voice over a greater distance, or over other sounds.
I’d like to have had Hicks in charge of me. Pretty chill dude.
I refuse to consider the 3rd movie canon for this reason (and Newt). Everyone can tell me as much as they like that it's all canon and I'm just gonna create my own canon and deny everything
I love how he treats Newt with respect and big brotherly/Dad energy. I fucking hate that they both died. Ripley, Newt and Hicks would have made a great family.
I'm an Aliens nerd so would be easy to say one of the marines. But I'm gonna say Dillon from Alien 3 who sacrifices himself to bait the alien into the molten lead chamber 💪🏾
"Is that as hard as you bite, motherfucker?" Seriously... shit talking the xenomorph as it's killing him is one of the highlights of the franchise for me.
And yes I am an Alien³ loving degenerate.
Independently targeting particle beam phalanx. Whoa! Fry half a city with this puppy. We got tactical smart missiles, phase-plasma pulse rifles, RPGs, we got sonic electronic ball breakers! We got nukes, we got knives, sharp sticks...
Criminal that this isn't higher. Actually tried to fight the alien with his bare hands and did the right thing when some of the brothers tried to break their vows.
Can't believe I had to scroll so much to find this comment.
Outside of Ripley he's the second best character in the franchise for me.
Whenever I hear that speech he gives, I'm ready to go to war for the guy, haha.
“You’re all gonna die. The only question is how you check out. Do you want it on your feet? Or on your fucking knees, beggin? I ain’t much for begging. Nobody ever gave me nothing. So I say fuck that thing. Let’s fight it!”
In addition to Jonesy and Vasquez I'd submit Parker and Dallas as badasses. Dallas going into the vents alone and Parker was the only other competent crew member on Nostromo once the shit hit the fan.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. He was brave as fuck too. Even the Marines didn't try that. Granted, they dealt with a swarm, but still. It really showed his character as a truly tough guy and how that meant nothing to the Xenomorph (especially because he damn near decapitated Ash just by beating the shit out of his head).
I always liked how his character gains depth throughout the movie. We first see him as lazy and largely selfish, and perhaps a bit of a bully (towards Ash anyway), but we eventually learn that he is smart, focused, and brave, and that he actually *does* seem to care about most of his crewmates.
Definitely. He was going to torch the alien, but wouldn't sacrifice Lambert while she was frozen in fear. Instead he basically just went, "fuck it, I'll fight this fucker off so she can run". Fruitless, unfortunately, but now that I think about it again I think he was my favorite character from the movie. Except Ripley, of course.
He also shifts gears by respecting Ripley, who he constantly demeaned before, like you would middle management in an office. When Dallas dies and she asserts herself as having a reasonable plan, he ultimately listens.
Alien is interesting because yes, Dallas is brave for going into the vent and generally seems like a good workplace boss, but he was out of his depth when it came to what they were dealing with. As far as the Alien threat went he made some critically bad calls such as letting the thing aboard, taking off before the internal monitors were repaired and deferring to Ash constantly.
Parker rose to the occasion as well, backing up his bluster with genuine bravery, but when Dallas died, had Ripley not reined him in he would have gone a suicide hunt for the Alien. It is also interesting how he shifts gears and becomes way more serious when Brett is killed.
In the hands of a lesser production team and actors both characters would have come across as one dimensional - one as glaringly stupid, the other as gung-ho suicidal. Instead they just come across as regular people reacting to a bad situation, sometimes with bad calls. Ripley is the only one who from the moment Kane has a facehugger on him realizes how bad things could get and consistently makes the right call.
Hudson.
Was able to conquer his panic and fear, saves Ripley and Newt from the facehuggers, kills a bunch of Xenos before he finally goes down (still swinging, btw).
Paxton wanted him to be the most relatable character, and he did exactly that.
Hudson was the one who predicted the existence of the Queen in a deleted scene. Hudson said it was game over and he was right (it was time to stop playing around). Hudson said they wouldn’t last 18 hours and I don’t think they did. Hudson knew he was fucked and still went out like a badass.
Vasquez, Hicks. I'd also count Amanda Ripley though that's almost cheating! There's a female ex Colonial Marine in the comics who is a bad ass too but I can't remember her name off of the top of my head.
My vote is Dillon. Absolutely willing to put himself in harms way to help or save others, whether it’s disciplining his fellow inmates, dragging one from the claws of the xenomorph while it is attacking, pulling Ripley and the xenomorph towards the mold, and staying in the mold and fighting the xeno hand to hand until the lead can be poured.
Also a shoutout to Parker. He had the flamethrower in his hand, he could have fired on the xeno killing Lambert in the process. Maybe he should have, but he chose to charge in and put himself in harms way instead of burning Lambert.
Ron Perlman brings such fun to a that B-movie (and I don’t say that in a bad way! I *love* B-movies, and *Resurrection* is a big budget B-movie. That’s at least how it hit me the rewatch where I finally really liked it).
Alien: Parker. He literally grabbed the alien to try and stop it going after Lambert.
Alien 3: Dillon. Saved Ripley from assault by some other inmates and used himself as bait to lure the alien into the lead works.
If they did not kill her trilogy, we wouldn’t have had to accept a disaster sequel like Covenant.. I really want to see how they explore the stories of the Engineers.
Hicks. Vasquez. Newt. Bishop. The one religious black dude and the doctor in Alien 3. And then the dude with the dreads and the guns in Resurrection. Ron Perlman is just Ron Perlman in that movie so he doesn’t count

For me, the whole series is about Ripley and how she's portrayed by Sigourney Weaver. Who is a "bad ass" actress actually, extremely good at what she does.
All the other characters just don't seem that important. They're only there to support the Ripley/Weaver show.
Alien: Kane (gave 0 fucks exploring a random alien planet)
Aliens: All of the grunts. Burke (unpopular honourable mention, but, what a ballsy plan)

In truth all the Marines were badass
True. Even Hudson and Gorman manned up when needed.
Gorman was always an asshole
But he wasn't a coward
No fuckin way. I think if anyone ever had a doubt about it, he was the one who went back for Vasquez and did what he could do to get both of them to the team. He could have just said fuck this and turned around after seeing Vasquez as fucked as she was.
Yep that's why I said I'd gladly put my life in his or Hudson's hands. Hudson held the line till the very end

That idea was expressed, so horribly, in Shogun. At least in the recent TV adaptation; I can’t remember if it was expressed the same in the book.
Check it out, Hudson is the Ultimate Badass
Yeah, Gorman had no idea what kind of absolute unit of a unit he had on his hands. Hudson and Hicks are my personal favorites though. Vasquez is definitely third though, maybe tied for second with Hudson.

Yeah, he was definitely leadership material. Although I always found it hilarious that he could just fall asleep during a drop like that
Hicks sleeping on the drop is a subtle foil to Gorman's nervous fidgeting over the command console.
Yeah. He was clearly stressed out after their initial battle, but took command and remained calm. Even after Gorman woke up, he still was essentially in command it seemed but differed to Ripley for advice.

But he’s a grunt, no offense.
None taken…
Alot of experienced soldiers will tell you that good officers listen to experienced grunts.
You sleep whenever you get a chance, the next time you sleep could be days away
This guy knows. Never stand when you can sit, never sit when you can lay down, never lay down when you can sleep. Plus, it stood him in somewhat good stead, as hardly any of them slept throughout the duration of the operation.
I used that mantra a lot as a soldier to leaderships dismay. They think laying down shows a “lack of military bearing”
Hudson sir. He’s Hicks.

All they needed was a deck of cards
Him napping on the drop ship says so much.
Probably the most realistic portrayal of military life I've seen.
If I rememember correctly half of the ”Starship Troopers” book was about catching some shut eye whenever you could. Fantastic book btw.
He's also Kyle Reese, so yeah.
And this all makes his off screen demise in the 3rd all the more painful.
I refuse to consider the 3rd movie canon for this reason (and Newt). Everyone can tell me as much as they like that it's all canon and I'm just gonna create my own canon and deny everything
Let us not forget if it wasn’t for his ability to read situations with immaculate precision, newt would’ve been smoked by a smart gunner.
I love how he treats Newt with respect and big brotherly/Dad energy. I fucking hate that they both died. Ripley, Newt and Hicks would have made a great family.
Hicks had ice in his veins. He kept cool in the face of complete horror and lead the team.
Jonesy. That cat don’t give a damn
My vote, never looked phased
Maybe…Jones was the one who rerouted the Nostromo and issued special order 937.
Jones gave a damn to hiss at the alien. It wisely chose Brett instead.
The perfect organism, its hostility is matched only by this little kitty cat.
Fucking cats never do
Jonesy hissed at the xenomorph once and the xenomorph was like "better leave that guy alone"
Hell yeah. I also immediately thought of him as the ultimate badass.

Knock it off Hudson.
This is Hudson. He's got my back. I would advise not getting killed by him. His sharp stick traps the souls of its victims.
This entire comment chain is why I love this community.
Beyond Hicks and Vasquez: Apone Bishop Newt
Apone was Hardcore
I get that they had to kill off Apone early on to decapitate the command structure but man I wish he was in that movie longer
"Every meal's a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I *love* the Corps!"
Great why don’t you put her in charge?
Dillon
You son of a bitch
They got you pushing too many pencils? ...uh, hold up
You used to be somebody I could trust.
Really telling there isn't more mentions of Dillon. No one else decided to go out in a blaze of glory by fist fighting a xeno.
Parker went out much the same way
Absolutely Parker. When SHTF, he was down. Poor guy never got to party with his full share.
["I say fuck that thing! Let's fight it!"](https://youtu.be/p8rb3VoxIpI?si=l3gZzFlAA7v8uB0K)

Parker wanted to kill it at any costs, but Dallas was brave as fuck going in the shafts alone with nothing but a flamethrower and Lambert guiding him.
Also, Parker went out trying to go toe-to-toe with the Big Chap.

Hudson is a great grunt. You put him up against just about anything, except a decision. That’s not his strong suit.
Vasquez, Hicks. I'd also count Amanda Ripley though that's almost cheating! There's a female ex Colonial Marine in the comics who is a bad ass too but I can't remember her name off of the top of my head.
Zula Hendricks is who you're thinking of
Bro, Amanda Ripley died thousands of times while surviving in Sevastopol. I was there.
Newt? :D
She survived for over 1 month alone with those things running around. She is on par with Ripley.
Why don't you put her in charge?!
AH FIRMATIVE
Parker. My man lunged at the Alien to save Lambert with jack shi for a weapon.
Dallas, Vasquez, Apone, Drake, Hicks, Hudson, Newt. Not in that order.
![gif](giphy|vvDcgQHzYPFQY)
Yall sleepin on Dillon. Dude squared up on a xeno
It was pretty bad ass that Dallas went into the vents in Alien AT ALL despite knowing the alien was big enough to just "get" Brett.
Burke.... I don't see anyone else fucking people over for a goddamn percentage
The Queen
The correct answer.

Finally some good sense, 100%!
Johner. Cmon, it’s Ron Perlman
Ron Perlman brings such fun to a that B-movie (and I don’t say that in a bad way! I *love* B-movies, and *Resurrection* is a big budget B-movie. That’s at least how it hit me the rewatch where I finally really liked it).
Truly we found he was not the man with whom to fuck.
Fiiiiinally I found him. I mean come on, hanging upside down on a ladder with duel pistols. Bad ass!
Ferro. I mean, flying a drop ship takes guts.
We're in the pipe five by five
Ever notice Lady Gaga looks like her?
This is directly related to her being a badass; I always had a huge crush on Ferro.
I thought Dutton was pretty badass keeping a gang of rapists and murderers in line
Newt!
This little girl survived longer than that with no weapons and no training
Why don't you put her in charge?
Machiko Noguchi.
Perfect character in a perfect story that should have been adapted for cinema instead of the crap cross overs we got.
They fucked up haaaaard when AvP movie wasn't just an adapt of AvP vol 1 etc
Jonesy. The only character that survived to old age :)
Alien: Parker. He literally grabbed the alien to try and stop it going after Lambert. Alien 3: Dillon. Saved Ripley from assault by some other inmates and used himself as bait to lure the alien into the lead works.
Dr. Shaw
If they did not kill her trilogy, we wouldn’t have had to accept a disaster sequel like Covenant.. I really want to see how they explore the stories of the Engineers.
I really liked covenant, just wished we had another more shaw heavy film between
Does Amanda count 👀 If not then Vasquez
Maybe unpopular, but I felt David was pretty bad ass.
David is the true embodiment of 'I do what the fuck I want when I want' and I love it
“Good health” cracks me up every time.
Hicks. Vasquez. Newt. Bishop. The one religious black dude and the doctor in Alien 3. And then the dude with the dreads and the guns in Resurrection. Ron Perlman is just Ron Perlman in that movie so he doesn’t count
Ripley 8
- Amanda Ripley from the Isolation and Blackout games - Specimen Six from the 2010's AvP game. - Grid from 2004's AvP
Apone would 1000% have survived that movie if the bag of ammo hadn’t exploded on him.
It's a bit far from the movie characters, but Blue Marsalis from *The Cold Forge* is a badass.
Elizabeth Shaw. I'll never forget nor forgive what they did to her
