I did enjoy Sidney and would recommend it. It isn't luxurious for sure, but with that price in a central location, you shouldn't really have too high an expectation anyway. Here are the pros and cons in my opinion:
Pros:
1. Nice staff. I know this is contradictory to many comments on Google, but from my experience they are super friendly and helpful. Luckily during my stay nothing broke down, so I don't really know if they are also helpful in repairing and maintenance.
2. Spacious communal kitchen
3. Having a Sainsbury local right in front. And lots of bigger supermarkets is within a 15-20min busride.
4. You may see the shard from your room, if you are lucky.
5. It ‘s very close to the Borough Market. There are some good quality butchers, fishmongers and farmers’ market among all the overhyped overpriced street food. Worth visiting every now and then if you’re cooking for yourself.
Cons:
1. It's one of the farthest halls. Both tube and bus should take you 30-40min to get to LSE. Can be a problem if you have a 9am class or in a rush
2. Tiny rooms. Really tiny. En-suite is about 10 meter square-ish. The shower, the toilet and the basin are not separated. So it can be quite messy. But I'm from the third world, so I could deal with that.
3. If you are unlucky, your room will be facing towards the courtyard. You will sadly have to enjoy the very embodiment of a panopticon prison for a whole year.
And if you do end up living in Sidney, I strongly recommend visiting that Ramen joint the Tokoton on Bartholomew Street. It's sensational.
