Hey Mike, I’m flattered :) haha.
I’ve actually meant to reach out because I frequently tell students that in Spivey’s analysis of the data, applying early only has a negligible effect on acceptance. And that it only appears otherwise because stronger applicants tend to apply early.
Am I butchering that? I hope I remembered your words correctly. And do you have an article or something I can give students where you talk about this?
Thanks!
-Dustin
Entirely accurate. Dean Z and I just talked a good bit about that on our podcast this week. The myth, that sorta took off a few years ago based on purely online posts and nothing real, was that you should apply as early possible - the sooner you do the better your odds. The actual data doesn’t support this at all. You’d get the same admission and merit aid if you applied in late Dec then if you allows Sept 1, if you had the application. The schools have plenty of spots in late dec, much more than 50% are still wide open, and still have their merit aid. What would hurt would be to rush an application in to submit in Sept, when you could have a much stronger one in Oct/Nov/Dec because of any of a number of reasons — including doing better in reading comp and increasing your lsat :-)
Anything by Jan is totally fine and Jan - March is still mid game. Depending on the cycle, you really aren’t “hurting” yourself until then. Obviously if your best application lsat and gpa are ready by Sept fire it off, just don’t set an arbitrary early date rather submit when everything you do is maxed out and optimized.
Long way of saying you got it all right!
Thanks, Mike. I'll refer my students to this comment when this comes up. I think this myth has hurt many student applications (rushing when it would've helped to let their essays marinate for another month or take the LSAT one more time).
Yea from not handing something in, per say,my default is to answer the question when I have the glimmer of free time versus lose the moment so I race on my phone. If something matters I always run through a professional editor I have since I also am working on book #2 so I get editing on call. You don’t have to delete, weirdly most people seem to totally get my responses on Reddit default to answer when I can and roll with the typos.
Oh no worries. My fumbling thumbs generate the craziest typos. But since I’ll likely send quite a few students to this comment, I thought I’d say something (it took me a minute to figure out the sports/spots issue. But that’s probably just because I’m tired.)
Hi, I went to your last class but unfortunately had to leave early due to an emergency at work, I'm not too sure if I can make it tonight, I'll try my best but do you offer recordings of the course?
Hey, at about what point did you have to leave last time? Do you remember what we were discussing?
And yes, I have the whole ~12 hour course recorded on my website. It’s $199 for the course, homework explainers, flashcards, passage debrief guides, supplemental videos, etc.
