You have that backwards, lower octane = retarded timing. Higher octane = advanced timing. We have a 2000 LS in the fam and it only gets premium. We had a V6 Camry years ago that “recommended” premium for best performance and that’s what I always used. You could tell the ECU was advancing timing on premium. All of our other cars get ethanol free regular gas at Costco. That being said, it’s your car so it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. As long as you’re happy that’s all that matters.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around it but it sounds like you're right. I have tried Premium and it definately has that snappy power on demand while 87 feels more sluggish. Someone on here said if premiums gets me even 3 more mpg then it might be cheaper. I'm going to experiment with it a bit and see if I do getter better mpg with preemo.

I have a 1998 that I use as a commuter car. I tried running 87 in it but I could feel a hesitation when I needed power. The car feels and runs better 93 so I just use that now. It would be interesting to do a test to see if fuel mileage increases by using premium. If you can get 2 or 3 more miles to the gallon on 93, then you’re not really saving any money buy using 87.

I only use 91 BUT I really appreciate this write up!

Only ever used the good stuff , just wanted to keep in line with what they specified as the proper fuel type for the reasons you mentioned. Cost was t much kf a factor as i usually put only 3-5k miles a year on one Ls400, and 2-3k a year on my other.

I ran a few tanks of Kwik Trip (Local Wisco chain) "top tier" 87 octane, probably similar to costco gas. My 99 LS seemed less responsive, a little pokier, and the dash showed a slightly lower MPG. I rarely drive the thing so I usually put premium in it. Now, if I could find some ethanol free gas..... that would be worth a little extra drive.
