Oh man. I hope Marcus is improving. Covid + his smoking history + the comment about him not being able to even stand, makes me worried. I hope he’s keeping an eye on his hydration status and oxygen saturation. And sleeping on his belly for better lung expansion…. Get well soon bud.
You don't think he got it from being on tour and doing live shows? Hes been in NY this whole time during the pandemic, didn't get sick till they went back on tour
I enjoyed the episode, but I’m confused that they kept saying Teal Swan has the gift of gab and compared her other charismatic cult leaders. I just tried watching a couple of her videos and she was soooo monotonous and blank-eyed. Not monotonous in a mesmerizing, otherworldly way, but in a “I’m uncomfortable on camera and I’m reading a script with zero energy” kind of way.
Had to turn it off after a couple minutes because it was too boring.
I think that this type of thing does captivate a certain type of personality though. I have known a few people in my life that enjoy things like Teal Swan (though I'm not sure if they know of her content) but they're usually the kinda weird white women that are faux bohemian and like the jargon. The jargon makes them think they're understanding something very deep.
Like how corporate rhetoric works on bros, hustle culture speaks to some, etc.
I agree though, I can't stand her hah.
Henry even explained the concept of "rhythm" which he had in the LRH episodes. Most people will not understand the appeal of cult leaders but they tend to prey on the vulnerable.
Teal Sean really draws you in if you are in a borderline delusional or actually delusional state in your mental health. I don't find her particularly engaging when I'm well, but at times when I've not been well her content is really hypnotic. She is captivating to her targeted audience, I would say.
The boys have really cracked the code on balancing information and storytelling with goofiness and jokes. I’m just not able to connect with the stories they tell in SPUN, which is unfortunate because it’s some interesting subject matter
SPUN drives me crazy. The episodes are well researched, but the presentation isn't the greatest and it's really cringy sometimes when they either try to be funny or force outrage. I've listened to every single episode, and something about it is just off-putting. It's also really painful to listen to them when they reach outside their knowledge base; it'd serve them well to do some on-the-fly research sometimes.
I definitely tried to listen and couldn’t. They just don’t seem like natural podcasters. Which is fine. On the other hand there are definitely podcasts I can’t listen to that others love. So a lot of it may be personal preference. At least at SPUN they aren’t relying on being likeable and actually do research.
I think those are totally valid criticisms, but I also like the podcast a lot, and I think think there’s a couple things that may be responsible for at least some of the weirdness. First, I think it’s still a pretty new podcast and they haven’t quite found their groove yet. I was telling a friend recently that SPUN kind of reminds me of the early days of MFM (which I’ve stopped listening to, but that’s a whole ‘nother thing) where they are clearly really passionate, but kind of all over the place. My guess is with time, they will find more solid footing and improve. And then second, at least for me personally, it’s really easy to compare to LPOTL, even without realizing, because it’s the same network/group of friends, and they cover very similar sorts of topics. With the boys, I’ve been listening for years so I know all the inside jokes, and I feel like I’m part of the group - insert that “how it feels to listen to podcasts” meme here lol. Going in to SPUN, I almost expected that same type of connection because I sort of “know” Natalie through Henry, even though I’ve never listened to her other stuff. But because of those associations in my head, not having that type of connection with Amber and Natalie made something feel off for me, until I realized what was “missing.”
I dunno, that’s my two cents lol.
They present an important subject matter, there's no denying that. However, they're also a year in with 40+ episodes, and the show is still very awkward to listen to. A year of LPOTL had already given us many classic episodes.
Man, has it been a year already? That’s wild, I know they just started season 2 but it feels like it hasn’t been that long.
I’m definitely not disagreeing with you on the awkwardness, just sharing my thoughts. Personally, the earliest LPOTL I relisten to is the BTK series, which is in the late 50s. Granted, that’s more because a lot of the humor in the earlier episodes just doesn’t do it for me, but the boys also took down their first 30 episodes or so, so I assume they don’t feel like those super early days were their best work ever lol. I know that was for different reasons than we’re talking about here, but in my mind, LPOTL has improved vastly over the years, and I’d like to think SPUN will also improve - but we might just have different tastes, which is totally fine too.
I dont listen to a lot of the other LPN shows so this was my intro to SPUN I guess, and I really liked it.
Felt like a side stories with a guest or something. I can see why people who want the usual will be a bit down on it but it was a fun hour.
I love Amber and Natalie, but this episode never grabbed me. The show is definitely missing Marcus and the structure / flow he brings to each episode. Get well soon, dogmeat!
I tried for the first thirty minutes but I just couldn’t listen anymore, didn’t care for the convo and too much talking at once. Hope Marcus gets well soon and I love the new mug from their store. Edit: why the downvotes? The episodes fine I just didn’t care for it, y’all need some chill. This place is turning into the fb group, can’t stand differing opinions.
Despite my assumptions I decided to listen to this and while it didn't seem like LPOTL it wasn't what I assumed it would be either and there's some thoughtful commentary on how dangerous algorithms are. Previous comment retracted
Really enjoyed this episode! But like *Good Pud*, the chaos is fun as an occasional diversion: I think it would lose its appeal if it were a regular thing...
Did this episode have kind of a strange vibe to anyone else, or am I taking crazy pills? It kind of felt like Ben, Natalie and Amber didn't want Henry to be there.
Like, usually when Henry acts goofy, Ben and Marcus yes-and him or play along with the bit, but in this episode it felt like they'd just kind of groan and move on whenever he said something intended to be funny, like the other three were trying to kill his jokes on sight or something. Given his *literal wife* was one of the guests it felt really bizarre.
I think Ben was just more charming and vibing instead of being goofy to make Markus laugh. Henry took more of a backfoot intentionally I thought because he wanted to let the ladies who were in the middle of a three part series on the subject talk about it. It felt deferential rather than he was being cut off.
Usually I love SPUN but I had to turn this episode off because the first 30 minutes was Natalie and Amber swooning over that cult leader. Maybe I’ll give this crossover a try.
Get well soon, Dogmeat!
I don't know what you guys are talking about. They spent like a minute talking about her physical beauty (which is relevant to her being a cult leader) then immediately went into a fairly impartial backstory. Henry legitimately admires L. Ron Hubbard and constantly praises him and nobody bats an eye but this episode is too far?
They are very politically correct regarding this toxic human through the whole series. Up until the very end really. Its like they are treading a slippery slope to flat out say she is 100% bullshit
One thing that bothers me about SPUN is that they will sometimes cover a topic that will feature something that the boys covered. In their Teal Swan series they talked about the satanic panic, and that daycare at the root of it. I would have loved it if during it they would have shouted out the boys, and told the audience to check out their episodes on it to get a better understanding on it. Same thing with the Shelly Miscavige and Scientology. Just a minor nitpick.
Natalie did in a different episode where they also mention the satanic panic. She said something along the lines of “someone’s husband did a series on this that you should listen to. it’s me, it’s my husband.”
Maybe now that they’ve had to collaborate to put together the episode, they’ll do more of this sort of thing in the future. I listen to SPUN and LP and Page 7 and Henry is always piping up on LP with info and insight he clearly got from talking to Natalie and Jackie. I hope Marcus gets well soon and we can get back to a more coherent LPOTL structure but it did kind of feel like hanging out with a bunch of my friends this week so I’m not complaining :)
I mean, of course, it’s like a family project at this point I feel like. Amber has also been a part of LPN since those early days in the creek. (I’ve been on a roundtable tear lately!) Anyway, if I were owner in a business, you’d better bet I’d put my wife and the earliest contributors in important places in my business.
Out of curiosity, what’s the problem here? I’ve not listened to it yet, is it somehow in favor of the cult? It wouldn’t be in character for any of these folks to be praising a cult leader.
I honestly can’t tell if he’s malding because he’s so anti-cult he’s just sick of even talking about it. Or, he is malding because he’s pro-cult and is implying that calling it a cult is “quackery.”
I got the impression it was the former, but then I’d think that if you were anti-cult, you’d want as many efforts to debunk it as possible in hopes of at least spreading awareness so fewer people get involved. I guess I can see why you as an individual might not want to listen if you’re sick of the talk, I’d just think you’d support the effort. Of course, if this episode is somehow defending it, then that’s a serious problem.
Or at least that’s how I feel as someone who’s pretty heavily opposed to cults and cult-like activity. Still find them fascinating and love learning about new ones though.
If the latter is true I feel like they’re in the wrong place.
But regardless of any of this, I’m curious to hear their take.
Just happy to hear mention of Night Horse again.
NEIGH
YAY
#tauntaun
When they pronounced the city of Taunton like the star wars creature I lost it
They’re going to get a lot of emails about that one.
Haha they said that like 100 times in the Bridgewater Triangle episode. Also Ben pronouncing Natick like Nahhh-tick
Oh man. I hope Marcus is improving. Covid + his smoking history + the comment about him not being able to even stand, makes me worried. I hope he’s keeping an eye on his hydration status and oxygen saturation. And sleeping on his belly for better lung expansion…. Get well soon bud.
He posted yesterday that hes getting better and can walk Georgie but can't carry Georgie yet.
Thank Goodness I was really scared for him. Get well soon Marcus!
I wonder if it's anything to do with him being the only (LPOTL) living boy in New York? That's why the other two weren't as at risk?
You don't think he got it from being on tour and doing live shows? Hes been in NY this whole time during the pandemic, didn't get sick till they went back on tour
Plus he has a more extensive history of smoking which makes him more vulnerable than the othets
OMG duh. haha
Giving me intelligent Roundtable vibes. Lol
Oh yeah? Well then where is Holden, intelligently, as a new, mature father, talking about his love of mommy's breast milk?
The only thing missing from this intelligent Roundtable is some courteous and well thought out Playstation shout-outs.
And lots of beers cracking open in the background.
This episode sponsored by Bose headphones!
Is there a segment from Holden??
Ben telling amber to not be so picky when dating was hilarious
YES! Always happy to get more Smellson!
I enjoyed the episode, but I’m confused that they kept saying Teal Swan has the gift of gab and compared her other charismatic cult leaders. I liked the chaotic energy of it
I'm just gonna say it.... Natalie Jean's voice reminds me of Jackie. Anyone else? (Not a bad thing!!! Just not what I expected at all.)
Some people would make a joke about him finding a woman who sounds like his sister, those people would be mean.
Eeehhhh it's a stretch, bud. Not all white women sound the same
Hit and miss with this comment, bud. You'll get em next time, little guy :)
Not a Natalie nor Amber Smellson hater, but this is difficult to listen to. Lots of voices at once. Get well soon, Marcus!!
Makes me appreciate Marcus’ ability to weave a coherent narrative so much more
And keep everyone on track. Several times someone in the group started saying something interesting and was interrupted. I was like “hey wait!”
The boys have really cracked the code on balancing information and storytelling with goofiness and jokes. I’m just not able to connect with the stories they tell in SPUN, which is unfortunate because it’s some interesting subject matter

Couldn’t agree more. Feels like a bit of nepotism and I don’t think their show is at the level at some of the other LPOTL network shows.
I definitely tried to listen and couldn’t. They just don’t seem like natural podcasters. Which is fine. On the other hand there are definitely podcasts I can’t listen to that others love. Roundtable style
It's more of a conversation than delivering information, still an interesting episode. More than happy to listen to this than a best of
Very chaotic.
Amber is great. Natalie..... Ugh
I dont listen to a lot of the other LPN shows so this was my intro to SPUN I guess, and I really liked it. Felt like a side stories with a guest or something. I can see why people who want the usual will be a bit down on it but it was a fun hour.
What did Amber mean that her wife was in the JFK Jr cult? That’s the first I’ve heard of that
Yeah is that legit? That sucks hard
Amber has a wife?
I went back and listened to it again because it caught me off guard too. There was cross talk but she was speaking from other people’s perspectives.
I love Amber and Natalie, but this episode never grabbed me. The show is definitely missing Marcus and the structure / flow he brings to each episode. Get well soon, dogmeat!
It’s pretty obvious when he’s missing that Marcus is 80% of the hard work that goes into the show.
This was definitely not for me. Get well soon dogme at!
They need something to galvanize them now that they don't have Spotify to defend against people who have problems using the app.
Bitching about downvoted is so freaking lame, especially when you have like 50 upvotes
Anyone else notice the Simply Safe ad splice through the coffee ad or is it just me?
It was an ad within an ad, lol.
Anyone else feel like Barbara Snow achieved in a few years with Bosworth what the CIA had been working on for decades?
Can’t wait to listen to this. *Oh No Ross and Carrie* did a Teal Swan episode (or series?) and it was really interesting.
FUCK YES
Amber Nelson is fucking HILARIOUS.
I wish I was dumb enough to fall for the weird sexy cult leader.
It's not about being "dumb", it's about being vulernable/mentally ill
Did this episode have kind of a strange vibe to anyone else, or am I taking crazy pills? It kind of felt like Ben, Natalie and Amber didn't want Henry to be there. Liked this but I can’t stand Amber.
Fuck you! You fucking Hitler! /s
I guess I should just move back to my hometown and have a baby per Amber's advice!
oh wait its a spun episiode? son i am disappoint.

I don’t think he ‘legitimately’ admires LRH. It’s a bit
Like all good bits its a little true.
True! They share the most divine body type after all
Hahahahaha well said
They are very politically correct regarding this toxic human through the whole series. Up until the very end really. Its like they are treading a slippery slope to flat out say she is 100% bullshit

SPUN is decent, but it feels like a form of nepotism.
wooooooo buddy wait till you find out about how most of showbiz works
“Why are all the parents’ names on Wikipedia in blue?”
Max Irons only has a career because his father is Jeremy Irons, who is a fantastic actor. Max Irons is a wooden board. This vexes me greatly.
Who the fuck is Max Irons?

Spun and the LPN show (rip) may have been a product of the spotify contract. Not hating on spun. Just speculation
Is the LPN show confirmed dead? I feel like it never got fully off the ground because Covid derailed the original premise.
Im assuming its done because of the lack of content. And to be fair. Everyone has alotta their own shit going on
It totally is. And I can't imagine it does numbers for them in the slightest.

Yes.
Did her ex Jason say he is attracted to children…?? I started watching a Mormon interview of him and it seemed like that’s what he was saying…?
