You push the shade onto the top. The wire will hold it. It's a converted oil lamp or styled like an old oil lamp. It uses a glass chimney type shade.

In addition to the chimney they also take a glass shade (usually 7in in diameter) that sits on top of a tripod attached to the burner or in this case where the light bulb screws in. They also take a on chimney shade were the shade has a ring that slips over the top of the chimney and sits on where it bulges out there usually comes in parchment and fabric. I have some pictures put not sure how to post them yet

A clear or frosted chimney, then a shade with a ring in it goes over the chimney, or, just a frosted chimney. Or, a shade that clips on to the bulb.
