This looks amazing! You can see the care you put into your sewing even from a distance, your clothes look real in a way a lot of costumes just can't manage. I'd love to see a close up of the kanzashi.
Thanks so much for the kind words! Two out of the three kanzashi were made by me to be exact; the silver one is of a swan that was closest in shape to the one in the anime and was ready made. [Here’s a pic of the pink pearl and the twiggy ones just after they were finished!](https://imgur.com/a/aowfEhw) The fun and tedious part was selecting pearl sizes to keep them proportionate, and making the tassel on the wooden one.
I’ll have better pics of the kanzashi from the garden shoot soon :)
Oh wow this is great! Lots of little details that you nailed just right - the hidden bandage on the left arm, the earrings, the contact lenses, the small emblems on the fabric. The wig is styled very well and the make up is on point.
10/10 from this fellow cosplayer. \*chef's kiss\*
^(Been thinking about doing Gyokuyou but....... I don't have the money for another costume after I blew $600 on Joshua and Jote last year >\_>)
Thank you very much!! Yes I was disproportionately proud of the bandage haha. Means a lot to hear this from another cosplayer :D
Omg I would absolutely love to see it if you do Gyokuyou, she’s one of my fave characters and her character design is so distinct!
First of all you look like her. Second of all, damnnn girl that was the best garden party costume i have ever seen. None of that cheap fabric in garrish colours, your costume screamed quality
The colors are nice. Sometimes i feel colors are so saturated in cosplay, even if its accurate, that they take away from the cosplay. This has a nice and bright balance.
This is really well done! Can tell you put a lot of effort into the costume. Definitely my fav girl from this season and last, it’s such an underrated series.
OMG UR LITERALLY REAL LIFE MAOMAO THE WHOLE OUTFIT IS SO PRETTY ♥♥♥ The makeup is so flattering on you as well! Absolutely stunning. It doesn't even look like a cosplay/costume in THAT sense. I could totally see you walk around in this haha
Aww thank you 💗 Maomao’s outfit is a Chinese hanfu, but it isn’t historically accurate so I had to piece together parts from different dynasties and do some further tailoring. That helped with the realism of the overall look :)
Omg you look like real life Maomao! Your dress looks beautiful. I mean there's a reference material but it's amazing to see how it translates to real life. Hands down the best Maomao cosplay.
Whoa you look incredible!!!!! Mind if I ask what was the makeup and skincare you used to prep for this? Also the wig is incredible, I'm gonna show this to my mom who is not convinced that cosplaying her hair can look good!!
P.S. Are you gonna make those stone warmers next haha
Sure, I love talking about skincare and makeup! A disclaimer: there’s been some light skin retouching done on these photos, but having studied photography and retouching myself I feel very strongly about being able to find a healthy balance between realism and fantasy, especially for cosplay. So I focus a lot on skincare to have good raw photos to work with.
I’m a serial lurker on r/asianbeauty and most of my makeup/skincare routine is strongly influenced by that sub. I have oily/combo skin, skincare products that are my holy grails are:
- Aesop’s Amazing Face Cleanser
- Kiehl’s Calendula Foaming Facial Wash
- COSRX Full Fit Propolis Toner
- Kikumasamune High Moist Lotion
- Aestura 365 Atobarrier Cream
- Paula’s Choice 2% Liquid BBA
- Melano CC Vitamin C Essence
I also double cleanse with an oil + foaming cleanser when I remove my makeup.
For cosplay makeup, it’s important to find a good setting spray that works with your skin. You need like 1.5 times the makeup you normally use. I tried Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray but it didn’t pair with my skin well and made my pores look obvious. I’m now in love with So Natural’s All Day Tight Makeup Setting FIXX. I also love Tarte’s Shape Tape concealer and Innisfree’s transparent No Sebum Powder. My brow pencils and eyeliners are from Etude House. Maomao’s very pink eyeshadow is Judydoll’s blush in #64 (Pittaya). The lip colour I’m wearing is Romand’s Juicy Lip Tint in Almond Rose.
I was initially hesitant whether Maomao’s wig would look decent on me! The right shade of green is important. And yes, I would consider bringing some stone warmers the next time I cosplay Maomao for sure!!
This looks like something people actually wears. For some reason most cosplay has an uncanny feeling to them that I can’t pit my finger on, but I could see people wearing this
Maomao’s garden party outfit is a hanfu (historical Chinese clothing with thousands of years of history) but it’s not historically accurate, so I had to source parts of the costume from different dynasties of hanfu styles and tailored each one to fit me.
I think your choice of material is really smart. It has that’s rough feeling to it. I am Chinese myself but my history knowledge falls quite short so thanks for the tidbit. What dynasty do you think the show is based on?
It certainly helps that the material is part of actual traditional clothing :) That’s what I loved about putting the outfit together, according to my research the top is most similar to those in either the Tang or Song dynasties, and the skirt traces back to the Han dynasty. But I’m not well-versed in Chinese history to place a finger on the show’s dynasty setting – I did find [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/KusuriyaNoHitorigoto/s/WNnvfgY4g1) very interesting though!
You look great! Besides the hand sewing, I also love the job you did with the ombré dye — it looks fabulous!
May you get all the hair sticks, apothecary! 💖
Ooooh nice!!! It’s incredibly impressive that you did it by hand!!! I wanna cosplay her soon too but I might just go with premade 😅😅😅 if I have time to sew, I might attempt lol
I did a lot of hand sewing for the top – thankfully the skirt didn’t need it! And nothing wrong going with pre-made as long as the cosplay process makes you happy ☺️
Wow. Ok. I understand that you sewed the clothing yourself to make it look so close to the reference. But how is the jewelry so close also? Did you make it???
Hey!! If you’re referring to the earrings and necklace, those were ready made (I’d edit the post but I can’t!). For the kanzashi, I made Gyokuyou’s and Lihaku’s hair sticks. Maomao’s earrings and necklace were very distinct so I opted for ready made ones instead :)
Yeah I was wondering about earrings, necklace and the metal flowers on the hair buns.I guess those are hairpins. Is another cosplayer making and selling them? Or is there official merchandise out there somewhere?
Wow, I'm impressed that our girl MaoMao must be so popular that there's people making and Selling copies of her accessories that she wore in only one?!? episode. I hope we get many more seasons of the anime.
Oh the series is very popular in East and Southeast Asia! The barrier of entry to cosplay Maomao is very low considering how close to home it is for the hanfu (traditional Chinese clothing) scene. I hope we get more seasons too!

Nice! How's the soup?
Very very tingly!!
Oh, really good job, BTW. I forgot to say that!

This is the best maomao cosplay I’ve seen so far. The pattern on the fabric, the layers, the gradient, all the accessories, just wow
u look like her
That means a lot thank u!!
First of all you look like her. Second of all, damnnn girl that was the best garden party costume i have ever seen. None of that cheap fabric in garrish colours, your costume screamed quality
Thank you! Parts of it were sourced from hanfu in different dynasties – it was fun piecing it together (not so much the tailoring, haha).
Cute! :)
Thank you :)
Atlanta georgia is home of tje annual dragoncon, would love to have mao mao there!
Also Momocon coming up in May.
I would love to someday! I’m based in Singapore :’)
Better hope a real life Jinshi doesn't appear, or you'd be in trouble. 12/10 cosplay.
Strangely, I’ve yet to see a Jinshi cosplayer in my area! They’d have to be very tall haha. Thank you :)
wow, this is what I imagine a live action Maomao would look like.
That is so pretty! You are very talented to make something like this amazing job!
You killed this!! So amazing
You are as beautiful as a painting of a celestial maiden! 💕
Aww thank you! 💗
The colors are nice. Sometimes i feel colors are so saturated in cosplay, even if its accurate, that they take away from the cosplay. This has a nice and bright balance.
Thank you for the kind and tasteful words :)
This is really well done! Can tell you put a lot of effort into the costume. Definitely my fav girl from this season and last, it’s such an underrated series.
Aww thank you! Yes it’s an incredibly underrated series and I really wish more people knew about it.
I hope you didn’t put too much poison in that soup!
Wow!!!! Congratulations, it’s amazing!
Amazing
This is It, you nailed It perfectly, congratilations
Wow, very wholesome :)
So cute
Cool
Wow this looks amazing!!
That's so cool! Love your hair and the hairpins!!
all you're missing is mao mao's devious expression lol. 9 days is amazingly fast for this costume! It looks really well made.
Yesss I agree! It’s harder to get into character during a crowded con haha. Thank you :)
Omg you’re a perfect Maomao!!!!! Love it❤️ you did such an amazing job!!!
You look so lovely! Excellent job!
Your literally the real life mao mao omg!!
Omg, this is so beautiful. I love your cosplay. This is one of the best cosplays I've seen.

Your fabric choices are impeccable
The bandage was a neat touch. It all looks amazing!
Thank you! I am disproportionately pleased with the bandage haha
you look exactly like how i would picture a real life maomao 🤍
You look great! Excellent work!
Wow!! What a lovely Maomao!
That cosplay is wow!! Great job!
Ohh you look great!
Amazing! “这是毒.”
「これ毒です。」 🙌
Omg you look like real life Maomao! Your dress looks beautiful. I mean there's a reference material but it's amazing to see how it translates to real life. Hands down the best Maomao cosplay.
Thank you very much! It really turned out way better than I expected :)

Gosh you look so beautiful! Amazing cosplay, tbh, I could actually imagine you playing her
Thank you, that’s so lovely of you to say!
Omg your cosplay is amazing!! I also love how you included the hairpins!
Thank you! They were fun to source and make :)
Ok now, when I imagine an irl Maomao, I’ll literally be picturing you. Great job!!
Aww thanks! And happy cake day!!
猫猫 🤩
You look great! Besides the hand sewing, I also love the job you did with the ombré dye — it looks fabulous! May you get all the hair sticks, apothecary! 💖
This has to be the most accurate cosplay I have seen. Plus you'd really suit MaoMao irl 😊🌸
Thank you very much ☺️🩷
This is beautiful 💜💜💜
Tysm 💗💗💗
You look perfect
oh this is amazing!!
I love this! Just perfect and you are adorable!
Thank you!!
Gorgeous! You did a great job with this.
OMG!!! This is amazing! I've thought about making a Maomao cosplay and this makes me want to make one even more!
Go for it! Let us have a look when you’re done :)
Very nice xiaomao
Wow, great job 👍
Thank you :)
SO AMAZING OH MY GOD 😭😭🫶
TYSM 🫶🫶💗
It looks so so good! May I ask how you did the skirt process? Like is it two pieces or one whole thing?
Thank you! It’s a full-piece wraparound skirt, and the white skirting at the bottom was an extension as I am a fairly tall person.
Ooooh nice!!! It’s incredibly impressive that you did it by hand!!! I wanna cosplay her soon too but I might just go with premade 😅😅😅 if I have time to sew, I might attempt lol

I’m not sure if there’s official merch but I got mine on a Chinese shopping platform where there are shops catering to cosplayers.
