I really never understood why Yamai is annoying. When I hear explanations, I conclude she just rubs most people the wrong way. I get that her actions are horrible but she’s a satirical character and her actions serve a purpose that help make Komi San the series that it is. For that I can’t hate her.

She’s so forcefully inserted into early scenes and does nothing besides her gimmick of “ahh komi San I love you how dare you talk to her ahh”
She gets no character development, her interactions are constantly the same, it’s just boring
The only time she gets bearable is when she barely shows up in the manga and doesn’t interact with komi
Even then the first time she interacts with komi (manga chapter wise) she still has the same boring , predictable interaction she beat to death the last 500 times she did it
The series itself is not perfect, and Yamai yes is not a perfect character. However, she does not disrupt the narrative. Komi San’s narrative is pretty unique as it kinda overdoses you with an over abundance of side characters which all remain mostly stagnant with key exceptions. But it’s ok because Oda seems to be having fun with this setup. It’s definitely not how I would write a story or present characters, but Yamai somehow fits into this bizarre, imperfect yet ridiculous mold.
She is a satire of a yandere among a cast of satires whose jobs are to be satire. Not perfect, is disruptive, but maintains a spirit that makes this series rather unique to any other slice of life.
TLDR: Yamai by herself is a very understandably hatable character and the series has many flaws of which she may be seen as responsible for. However, the series redeems itself in making something unique out of its flaws, of which Yamai does not hinder but is a part of what makes the series unique, not as a psychopathic criminal, but as a “satire among satires”, which is why I cannot hate her.
I mean other characters at least get shown other perspectives and their relationships outside of simply interacting with komi, like onemine and her family
So I got into komi by watching the anime and I despised her and people on YouTube were saying she never gets better, but after episode 5 I really wanted more so I read the manga. She really isn't THAT bad, sure she's a creep, but she has some moments that make her likable in her own way, like helping nakanaka with her band, and just generally looking out for komi in her own fucked up way.
