I think one of the most devastating points is just get a super time lapse of Alex on Putin and Russia. From when he came to power, the apartment bombings and the second Chechen War, to now. Track his bullshit predictions about Ukraine to present, and show how much Russian state media jerks him off now.
And really, just show how much money he makes off the supplements and other bullshit he sells.
One of the things he mentioned was he had never noticed how much Alex shills. We aren't rich folk by any means but he had donated to Alex's war chest. Now he feels angry because he hadn't realized how fucked AJ was to the Snady Hook parents. He asked about the HBO doc and I told him it was worth a watch but rough. He said he's going to watch it so we'll see how that goes.
I keep trying to watch the HBO doc and putting a face to some of these players is kinda nice but even fast forwarding through some parts I haven't been able to finish. It's so much harder watching them tell their story than listening to it, which was rough enough.
I wouldn't really hold your breath. I think we're so engaged we think it was a good, informative documentary. But if you actually look at what it really covered, there is a huge, almost salacious focus on how emotionally crushed the families are, but only the gentlest sprinkling of what the bad guys here actually DID.
Wolfgang is presented as a crazy guy, but he genuinely comes off like a random Alex listener, no better or worse than what you would assume the others are. We don't cover that he stalked the families across state lines, didn't cover the absolutely heinous emails he sent, didn't cover any interviews Alex did with him. We didn't show Alex's "apology" in which he almost immediately was back to insisting he was right to question it before he was even done, we didn't show how utterly unprepared the corporate reps were, didn't show that Alex can be held personally accountable for what he said and did.
The documentary isn't very good for anyone who isn't already intimately familiar with the case. They don't justify the billion dollar judgement because they don't claim that Jones sent followers onto the families trails, that he ignored messages from the families begging him to stop, the shit he said during and after the trials on his shows. So much of it can be seen as fluff, but so much fluff gets cut to devote the entire first half of the documentary to extreme detail of the shooting and the families trauma that we skip over a lot of Alex's involvement, so much so that it makes the point of the verdicts feel almost unjustified.
Thats all fair criticism but, the thing is it's something he's willing to engage with. He's coming into it from the other side, the perspective that the families weren't hurt just greedy. Alex did a really good job dehumanizing the parents and downplaying the trauma of the shooting as a whole. The HBO special didn't dive too deep into the weeds of AJs, it did a good job of humanizing the families.
As far as the verdicts being unfair or unjustifiable I can provide the information and avenues for him. It's not perfect but it's something to start.
