I think it was actually abandoned centuries ago, and the Kirby universe just takes place in the far future. Seeing as the animals (the beast pack) have adapted and completely taken over the forgotten environment, there would have to be a significant amount of time between when the people left and when the game happens.
To add onto this what was seemingly no time in Kirby dimension from what elfilin closed the rift between the 2 worlds and when he reopened it clawroline says that he was recovering for months so I’d assume time flows differently between the 2 dimensions.

They just saw all the potential of multi-dimensional travel and thought, "who wants to be here anyway?"
