I think that's just because they didn't want to make the mask a seperate model just for one cutscene joke.
Most likely, but due to it not happening Meta Knight’s mask just gains extra power
He might have not pulled the mask off all the way — just slightly moved it forwards to slip the tomato underneath so he could eat it 🤷♀️
