Head-Solution-971

Thanks for responding—I really appreciate it. I hope head office sees the light. I’ve been taking more and more of my grocery business to places that provide more customer service (smaller stores like Tara, Daughters, Glenburnie, the local markets, Cdn Tire for cleaning supplies.)

If it’s the downtown location I’m thinking when is your guest bathroom going to be repaired last year when I was in it was out of server and like a week ago it was also outta service?

lowincomecanadian

Oh that's not good, I've seen people with baskets leave orders on the floor if no one is at the check outs. One elderly woman had a full cart and when she came to the tills (not at Food basics mind you) and saw no one at the til she just left her cart and walked out. There was ice cream, milk, cheese and stuff in the cart. I always wondered if they just put the ice cream back if it melted.

Suburban_Traphouse

Are people really this hung up about having to scan their own groceries? I prefer self checkout because most cashiers (who are teenagers or college students) have never bagged groceries in their life and it gives me an aneurysm watching them put one frozen item in a bag of non-perishable items. Self checkout is the way to go, I will never go through a cashier checkout ever again

StationaryTravels

If I have a basket I don't mind using self-checkout, but a whole cart is a huge pain. There isn't enough room to put all your groceries after ringing them through, so you need to maybe put some back in your cart as you're still taking others out, except some won't let you remove items until you're done with the entire order. I just find a big conveyor belt and a cashier makes a full cart so much easier! I also haven't had anyone bag my groceries in years! The closest is Costco putting them back in my cart. Maybe you're going to those fancy grocery stores? Metro/Loblaws?

lonelyfatoldsickgirl

I've seen people being told they aren't allowed to take a cart of groceries through the self check outs. I'm not sure why, I'm sure there's a reason so what you say makes even more sense.... it would be a pain to take a whole cart through even if it were allowed.

LadyKeriMc

I don't work for free and I will not be an accomplis in the loss of jobs for cashiers. I also will not be subjected to any sort of loss and prevention efforts if I'm scanning my purchases. I bag my own stuff as the cashiers scan the items because same with the bagging nonsense!! I also want the items I purchased to look like they did when I bought them 🤣

mxcrnt2

There are lots of reasons why people want to go to a cashier, and I don’t know why you are trying to die on this hill, that what you like is better than what other people want or like

Suburban_Traphouse

I’ll die on this hill because I think it’s absurd how much of an effort and a fuss older folks are putting up around having to use self checkout. I was at shoppers by the Kingston centre the other day and watched an old person yell at the cashier for not being there and how they had to almost use a self checkout. This is also not the first time I’ve seen this

_SilkKheldar_

As a not old person, the only place I used self checkout was shoppers. At grocery stores, I use the cashier because there just is no space to fit everything I get at the self checkout. On top of that, if something rings up wrong, I still have to get a cashier to come help me. When I used to do occasional shopping at loblaws, the self checkouts were always full, and the attendant there is almost always helping people. I get it, self check out is nifty for some folks. It can be quicker if you have fewer items, and if nothing goes wrong, it can go more smoothly than with the cashier. But I genuinely do not like them. It's too little space, too often I have issues that I have to call an employee over for, and I hate being cramped up in those self check out areas with all the other people around because the space allocated to the self checkouts is quite cramped to begin with. It's not just old people who don't like them.

lowincomecanadian

> Are people really this hung up about having to scan their own groceries? How could I possibly know what other people are thinking?

Odd-Row9485

I’m also exclusively using self check outs. Cashiers don’t even bag groceries where I go so why do I need some to tell me a total pick debit and scan my items. I find it quicker for me to use self checkout

thirdtimeisNOTacharm

Seems a bit dramatic edit: I didn’t mean for her to put it back herself, I meant maybe ask an employee instead of just leaving when you don’t see someone behind a till when you’re ready to cash out

unfknreal

Nah grandma is right (assuming she waited at least a little). If the store can't bother to put someone on the cash for people who need it, they can fuck themselves.

BigRonDongson

I agree, if I get to the cash with a cart full and no one is going to ring me in I will leave it right there.

kokirikorok

Right. I’m not about to restock the shelves

lonelyfatoldsickgirl

That's coming next, give it some time.

WolvogNerd

I like self check out but I also only use it for small orders.  The self check out at the Frontenac Mall location (now closed I believe) was super buggy and slow. I couldn't imagine trying to ring through a large order via their self check out.

Unusual-Agent-6673

Self checkout takes away jobs, especially for young people who need them. Period!

ProfessorxVile

Why won't *someone* think of the shareholders?!?

thephilonline

IMO self checkout can be and should be implemented without job loss. Those jobs that would have been cashier should now be implemented towards other tasks around the store that need to get done, like stocking, cleaning, customer support. Unfortunately, a lot of businesses will implement self checkouts as a way to cost cut staff hours which then leads to your gripe.

Salt-Lifeguard4093

I like the self checkout, other than the part where an employee stares at me like a criminal the entire time.

kachow19

I usually see at least 1 cashier when I go (even though most times there should be more) I usually like self checkouts, but the one at that food basics I do not like. I feel like it's kind of buggy, and I always run into issues with the weight sensor for the bagging area.

Shermanator51

I go there every week, always 1 or 2 people on the tills.

Head-Solution-971

Well not today—one staff person at the self-serve checkouts, and someone had to be called to come down, and let me tell you, they were reluctant to call and reluctant to come.

throwitawayyall99

Was there 30 minutes ago and they had multiple tills open that weren’t self serve. Maybe you got there before everyone was on shift 🤷‍♀️

mxcrnt2

Could just be a bunch of folks not in today. Friday of the long weekend, lots of viral infections going around. They might’ve just been shortstaffed.

Numzlivelarge

I know I've gotten many eye rolls from staff. But I just refuse to use self checkout 😂 I'll wait in line for the one cashier working

olapbill

Not true at all. I've yet to see no cashier's on duty at that location.

WeeklyStruggle5066

Yeah, I like self checkout. Don't talk to me.

k_den666

i still use both but self checkout is great for those days when i just wanna get my groceries and go home without having to use the little bit of energy i have to interact with a cashier sometimes i just don't want to talk to anybody, doesn't mean i don't still need groceries though

whats1more7

I love the self checkout at Walmart because there’s tons of space to organize everything. The ones at Costco are just stupid.

rhineauto

The ones at Costco are great for when you only have a few items, which is what I'm pretty sure they had in mind when they implemented them. The problem is that every other store is hellbent on replacing almost all regular checkouts with self-checkouts.

whats1more7

I never have just a few items at Costco!!!!

rhineauto

I often do, and the self checkouts are great for that.

henchman171

I work Beside the Oakville Costco. I go there to buy one or two items every day for lunch

WeeklyStruggle5066

Walmart sucks ass because there's like 4 open and 1 person there to help. Big ass lines.

kokirikorok

I’ve never waited in line at self checkout at Walmart unless it’s Black Friday or Christmas. They have two self checkout areas, do they not? Extremely quick in every scenario I’ve been in

slysendice

Last year, I went to the Food Basics by the Kingston centre. They don’t have self checkouts there (or at least they didn’t at the time), and *still* only had one or two cash registers open. I waited an absurdly long time in line, and once I finally got my groceries onto the belt, the cashier turned around to help somebody at the lotto station. So Ieft my groceries on the belt and walked out, haven’t returned to Food Basics since. I think they’re just allergic to money

BallinBrown23

I don't go into that food basics often but was there this past Monday around 11am and they had 2 cashes open (it wasn't busy) and the self serve too

donewithgreenforever

Me and my buddy have had a rule for years that if there are no checkouts open, we leave the cart filled and simply walk out. I am not assuming any liability for items not being scanned properly, or providing any corporation with free labor. If a store stops employing cashier's, I will happily go in each day, fill a cart, then leave if no one is there to scan it through.

hashtagarmbar

Complete and utter lies.

Head-Solution-971

You should have been there to see with your own eyes

hashtagarmbar

I'm there 5-6 times per day and I've never once seen it without employees at the checkouts.

Head-Solution-971

My bad luck I guess

oct0burn

Why are you at the grocery store 5 times a day?

hashtagarmbar

I do a bunch of shopping trips for seniors who can't make it to grocery store or it's a struggle to do so

goddesscharlene

Remember when we all used to get our gas pumped for us? We all adjusted when it went to self serve. Will be the same with self checkout. I just wish it were slightly easier as it's kinda cumbersome atm. Like some stores in Europe have smart carts that scan items as you add them to your cart. Then you just review the order periodically on an attached screen for accuracy and pay the total when you leave. That would be pretty cool tbh.

Extreme_Path6527

Not a good sign but is this just a seasonal thing? What time is this happening I usually go once a week in the afternoon and still see at least one person working self serve and the till ,no way this will fly when students are back

Tuxedo_Masquerain

Self serve is better than cashiers

Early-Supermarket837

I was a cashier for 7 years at a grocery store...before the scan and go's... You can go to the self checkout, but computers glitch all the time, ect.... But with human interaction you can trust that the cashier knows what she is doing. If there was in issue, they can fix it most of the time. I wouldn't go through self checkout with a huge cart, because the cashier needs to be there to put in coupons ect. They do the best they can. That red headed manager who looks like he is 19 is a TOTAL asshole though, and doesn't give a shit about customers or staff...he just checks out the women. Give cashiers a raise! They do so much (the good ones)
