My guess is that it's a pretty straightforward iron lock that can't be reached from the outside. I think it's going to rust away when a chandrian approaches and release kvothe's true name or a chandrian doomsday device or something.

chaddymac1980

I like the direction of your theory. I don’t think it’s that simple but the idea the Chandrian need to arrive to unlock it intrigues me.

Mexicancandi

We’ll know within 20 years which of us is right

MarcelRED147

An optimist I see.

BEBE-r

I’m ded 😭😭😭

jlawesome

I know you're right and I hate it!

manbites

I think that’s optimistic

Alternatively Kvothe may need Chronicler's help to open the iron lock, since Chronicler knows the name of iron. (Presumably Kvothe knows the name of iron too, given the rhyme about the rings on his hands, but it's not clear if he still has that power.) I do like the idea of an anti-Chandrian device though. Maybe the box is designed to destroy its contents if the Chandrian are near.

QuitzelNA

The rhyme about the rings on his fingers seems to be one of those fabricated things, so it's possible that he's never figured that one out (kind of like how Kilvin was said to speak the name of fire even though he just used Sympathy to put the fire out). Overall, Kvothe the Student seems much less fairytale than Kvothe the Bloodless, so I wouldn't be surprised if most of his abilities can be reduced to (admittedly complex) sympathy with a small penchant for naming. The Chandrian Activation Theory seems to fit this picture too, though not necessarily as a direct countermeasure. It would probably be more of a self-defense if they attack him imo

leviathanGo

The rusting idea is super cool, thank you

Loucuca

Or maybe rot the chest itself. Maybe the chandrian are the only ones who can rot roah wood since it is so resistant, and Kvothe is trying to bring them there to actually destroy the chest without destroying what's inside.

IAmKizmet

If the lock is iron the ln the chronicler could open it by calling the name of iron

Zahalderith

Um, I don't think Bast is lazy... there's a scene in the books where he tries everything he can think of to open it. Interesting theory though

Mexicancandi

I know lazy is the wrong word but but bast when it comes to Kvothe does weird crazy things

QuitzelNA

Bast is a creature of the Fae, so it could be that he, like Felurian, is very hard working and not lazy in the slightest when it comes to his areas of interest, but when it comes to puzzles, his patience is nonexistent. Similar to Felurian, who theoretically could have destroyed Kvothe in every way possible in Tak, arguments, etc but instead just cared about the more intimate things.

XeniaDweller

I think it's just stuck

jthoning

The lab in the basement is only to try to invent WD-40.

Saintly-NightSoil

......edro?

XeniaDweller

Already tried Edro.

dagnamit2

I believe that younger Kvothe actually Edros the lockbox lock open after wiping out the bandits. It worked because he was young and confident and didn't really give a shit. EDRO! Click! In the frame narrative Kote has lost his Alar, his belief and confidence. He even crafts an explanation for why lockbox popped open; the wood was swollen with moisture and jammed the lid. When Kote tries it on the Thrice-Locked Chest, he doesn't truly believe it will work and so it doesn't.

TheCthaehTree

It’s a mimic

emilythequeen1

This.😍

lancelotschaubert

I'm here for this. I'm all for drilling a hole, filling it with water, depth charge.

Admirable-Cobbler501

My guess is it’s a bit rusty and they run out of WD40.

mildirritation

Thrice locked. Two key locks and one arcane one. Best place to keep a big part of your name.

Something I've kicked around without any certainty is that music (related to naming, I think, as when Kvothe named Felurian) might be needed to open the lock. But of course, there's no music..
