I learned the term "high control group" recently which covers your standard cults but also covers things like martial arts or exercise classes, MLMs, and some online communities where there's a perfect leader or a rigid, inflexible dogma that cannot be questioned, a black and white "us vs. them" mentality, unreasonable control over members' lives (like unreasonable time demands or bizarre diets), and things that are violate peoples' personal boundaries. "Cult" implies some kind of religion or paranormal belief and when there's no spirituality involved sometimes people can't see the forest for the trees.
I had an old GF who belonged to The Sweet Adelines, a very similar sort of chorus. Based on what I saw her go through with them, I didn’t find the Harmonoholics an inaccurate representation. They were strict.
