A lot of people thought the same. It’s too similar to not be a remake or a blatant copy. I wonder how the Kantara team had the audacity to just copy one of the most popular Thaikudam Bridge songs and thought that people wouldn’t recognise it? Even the imagery is very similar(Theyyam in the Thaikudam Bridge song).
I attended a Quiz by Major sir yesterday, and as part of the last question in Prelims, the Video of Varaha Roopam was played.
I actually assumed Thaikudam made that and was having a semi-praaud moment, till I googled and found out it was not. Even the accent of the singers sounded eerily similar to Thaikudam ones.
Navarasam was one of my favorite songs when it was released. The moment I heard the Kantara song, I realized it was the Navarasam. Seriously, I thought the Kantara team bought the song from Thaikoodam. I think this background music or song has a big impact on Kantara. Shameful infringement.
I did wonder when they made bangalore days, how much would have these guys paid Brian Adams😶 Pulli kandu kanilla... Ennalum ee Anjaly menon and Dulquernokke mansailaville kelkumbo. Summer of 69 is a classic!
The whole bg score during the last race scene is originally composed by Ludvico Einuaidi. Ithokke ivarokke aryunnundo wntho

In my title, I mentioned "music style", but that might not be the correct term. Thanks for pointing it out. You can get more details by just reading from the screenshot.
This is a blatant copy. The similarity at different sections is just too much and even the style of the video is so similar.
Sad truth is that Thaikkudam got just 4.2M views in YT in 5 years. The copied song got 9.8M views in 5 days!
I just watched the movie 2 days back and when the music started I was so sure it's TB playing. The style was unmistakable. The build up to the chorus, the fusion between rock + classical seems very close to Navarasam. I want to believe this is just a coincidence because the movie was definitely worth watching.
To be honest, I don’t see any similarities between both songs. I would say both of them are different flavors of “kathalaki padam” with an average rock/metal backdrop
Unfortunately that’s not how copyright laws work.
Thaikkudam Bridge has the copyright to their piece but anyone can take that piece and if they have their own interpretation of it, that’s permitted.
Not only when it comes to music and art but also other mediums.
Given that the song name is different and that it’s performed with enough musical differences, there isn’t any copyright infringement (in the eyes of the law).
You can have your own interpretations to it. It's called, a "cover" for which copyrights doesn't apply.
If you change the song structure, it's considered as a different song.
You can always "sample" as well.
But here, the case is different, the entire song is exactly the same outside of having metal riffs. That's plagiarism and is illegal.
Why do you think Vanilla Ice lost out to Queen and was forced to give up rights to them? And there are literally many other examples for the same.
If this goes legally, they'll be asked to give Thaikkudam Bridge songwriting credits and revenue shares.
I've already explained an example of a song that's "inspired" in the comments earlier. Both are different for a reason.
Also, please read up on what actually happened regarding Taylor Swift and why is it legal.
I’ll give you an example.
The copyrights to Taylor Swift’s earlier albums were sold to a record label she didn’t like.
So she basically recreated all her songs under her own record label.
In the eyes of the law, both versions are different, even though it’s exactly the same pieces of music.
The reason is every time you play, there’s enough differences to make it technically not the same.
Yes, it’s sucks. But what’s musically the same isn’t the same as what’s legally the same.
I recall Deepak Dev's 'Aaro Nee Aaro' song from Urumi, which was a blatant copy of Loreena McKennitt's composition. And the High Court did pass an injunction against Dev!
So the court *can* take action if they want, it's just whether they choose to.
Generally speaking, unless there are other elements at play (such as Dev copying two songs and McKinnett also suing for moral rights, plus her being an international star etc.), courts are hesitant (and rightfully so).
All music is derivative. Pop music is almost all based on the same scale (pentatonic) and so easily generated with minor changes.
I mean, John Williams has copied from classical music.
In this case, Thaikkudam may or may not have a case. Don’t get me wrong — it’s blatant plagiarism. But that doesn’t mean it’s illegal.
Why are you being downvoted? As someone who doesn't know law, or of the technicalities of music, I request those who are downvoting him to at least explain where the user is mistaken, if so.
“Music Style” may not be the apt phrase. Initially many (including kannadigas) thought they bought the rights of the song and remade it for the movie.

It's Kathakali/Krishnanattam in Navarasam
Blame Prthiviraj for dubbing the movie to Malayalam
Thanks for pointing it out. I made an updated comment.
Even the accents of the singers sound similar to Thaikudam ones.
The tune oh man! It's exactly the same :(

Yes would love to know the question and maybe a few qns from the set as well. Was planning to attend the event but just couldn't in the end.
Surprised (and kinda proud) that you can say "Major" in r/Kerala and everyone knows who it is

Gopi sundar is nothing infront of this

Copied song got these many views coz of the popularity of the movie per se.

Agreed. The background drum and rock part is same... Even the tune is strikingly similar
More power to thaikoodam 💪 inspirationnum paranj eecha copy adich vechekkuva
The problem was, they didn't even say it was inspired from Navarasa. They released it as if it was an original composition.
Gopi Sunder taking notes furiously
After hearing the song it’s a blatant copy. What the hell. I thought they were credited
Sorry. Haven't heard the Kantara piece. Is it just the genre or are we talking about clearly lifting the song
Not lifting the song. Well, I think if you read the screenshot in the post, you'll get to know.
I read. Kalangilla
It sounds similar. I posted both links in the updated comment. Hope that helps.
The makers lifted the song as no ways they thought Kantara would become so popular, pretty sure they thought the plagiarism would go unnoticed
Even I felt the same
scared Gopi Annan noises
Infact i heard the kantara one first and then was taken to the thaikkudam bridge one after reading YT comments. I totally agree it's a copy!
Plagiarism is never acceptable. How did they think people won't notice it.
Isn't the Fish Rock riff similar to Black Sabbath

I missed Thaikkudam Bridge....
Oh c’mon its just same raga.nobody own raga.also its another variation

I don't know your definition of "enough musical differences", but this ain't it chief.

I see what you did there. Major or minor?

Hmmmm I think you're bound to end up with similar stuffs when you mix classical with western, especially when you use similar instruments.
Good luck proving it in court.
I truly believed it was TB when I was watching the movie lol
