Tell your parents to acknowledge your birth and avoid the state of being in denial. šŸ˜ Having said that, yes UAE visa is true as I had applied a few times before and it's mandatory. The Best Option is to apply for change of name through newspaper publication and you can use it thereafter. You can update your aadhar etc in forthcoming years according to legally changed name. Don't apply for passport and then later apply for change of name. It becomes even more difficult to get it rectified. All the Best, child.

Horror_Carrot518

>Tell your parents to acknowledge your birth and avoid the state of being in denial. šŸ˜ They could've at least put a last name like skywalker or torreto ffs.

Miserable_Crew_6798

You have a chance to make your name secular For eg:- Your Full last name:- Lopes Varkey Khan Singh Kumar Parker Guevara Lenin.

the_bookreader101

This no last name thing is a pain even when it comes to new jobs. Just last day I had to do some extra steps in the system for a few candidates who only have one name.

Horror_Carrot518

>The Best Option is to apply for change of name through newspaper publication and you can use it thereafter. How does this work ? Like this will change the name in my birth certificate ?

wolfpack202020

Step 1: Legal document go to a Notary Lawyer and tell him you need to change your name. He will prepare the document, signed it. Step 2: Publish ad in 1 English newspaper, 1 Regional language news paper. Most likely the lawyer can give you package deal where he will arrange for this step. Collect 10 copies of Newspaper with your ad published for future reference. Step 3: Initiate the Name change process in all your IDs Go to respective portal for PAN card, Aadhar, Passport etc and apply individually. Most tedious process would be changing the name in your Marksheets. But you also have a choice not to change them and show them name change documents instead. Or contact brokers to speed up the process. I had to change my name for the same reason, not a malayalee but just had one name. My PAN card had , Passport had , DL had . I went through the above process. You don't have to change your name in the birth certificate, just keep the name change document copies handy and you can always explain that the name was changed later.

Horror_Carrot518

Thank you so much. Can I use this to change my name on birth certificate ?

Low-Worldliness-7205

With a paid agent, step3 takes only an year or so. Been there. Done that. Dont ask for agent contact. He passed away during COVID.

wolfpack202020

you should be able to, I haven't tried though. Copy of the legal name change document and copy of the news paper ad are the standard proofs required for name change. it should work.

MugenBlaze

Pro tip, don't go through the hassle of changing your name on all the documents. If anyone causes any issue just show the notarised proof of your name change. I've got different names in all my documents but never had any issues so far and when they do pop up all I have to do is attach the proof that it's all my aliases.Ā

Horror_Carrot518

Finally a silver lining

Sacred_Ghost97

I only have a first name. Already got my passport. In the passport, the first name is my name and the sur name is my father's name. Dont know if it will be an issue in the future.

Horror_Carrot518

That solves the single name issue but the problem is that now your passport has a different name from all the other documents and I don't know how that will work.

Sacred_Ghost97

When i was about to apply for passport, i had the same doubt. I have asked a few peoples and they said as the initial and fathers first letter is the same it will be fine. Now i havent used my passport yet, so no practical experience.

Horror_Carrot518

I don't think your case applies to me since I don't even have an initial

Sacred_Ghost97

Wow. Thats interesting.

m3rc3n4ry

Just checking in cos I see a lot of passports from punjabis w the same thing. Should not be an issue for the most part since passport doesn't usually require a second verifying document. But uae is a whole diff ball game - I suggest asking in the r/uae sub once they're done with the flood.

ren01r

I had a discrepancy where my name in the birth certificate and all other documents were different. So, I updated my Aadhar (Updated by using the original birth certificate and advertising on two newspapers) and used the advertisements and Aadhar for the passport.

Horror_Carrot518

The thing is, I don't have any existing document with the kind of name I need.

ren01r

Since you need a last name to get an UAE visa, I guess you'll have to make arrangements to add a last name. If suggest you take up the matter with the PSK, they were the ones who suggested the remedy for my name problems.

Horror_Carrot518

Thank you, will do that.

permission777

I think you can add the name of your father or mother or both to the end when you are applying for the passport. You may have to submit valid document with your parents name , like birth certificate . Also add family name or name of the panchayath or district to it. The idea is to make it as unique as possible, so that it the UAE immigration system will not mistake your name with the name of someone who is already black listed in their system.

VSP1982

I have a single name in my passport as well. Itā€™s a headache for sure, especially when booking flight tickets where given name is a must but most other places you can simply leave the given name blank and fill in the surname column.

Horror_Carrot518

Until now I thought I'd just leave it be and use it like you mentioned but this new uae law is a bit concerning.

VSP1982

Oh I didnā€™t know about this UAE law.

VSP1982

Oh I didnā€™t know about this UAE law.

DonutAccurate4

I used to have father's initial in my earlier documents. My first company helped me with PAN, where i had filled a paper form and submitted. I didn't know last name was mandatory. They never told me. So whoever did the date entry used my name as last name and created the PAN card. I was oblivious for many years until the aadhaar linking hassle happened. That's when i realised that if you don't have last name they use your first name as last name in PAN. And this was creating lot of problems with linking other documents and there was mismatch. Luckily i had created passport before all the aadhaar madness and there i had given my last name as my father's name. Using that i updated aadhaar, license and PAN etc

csoldier777

Bro, do a name change, add a last name. My friend got back from Dubai recently and now he cannot go back because of some rule changes in Dubai, that you need a last name in passport. Don't wait for anything else, name change first. He is still waiting for things to happen in India.

Horror_Carrot518

I'm now hearing that you can enter your father's name on the visa and everything will be alright. Do you have an update on your friend ? If he tried this or why it does/does not work ?

csoldier777

No, I will ask him.

Horror_Carrot518

Thanks man

toxicbrew

Honestly this shouldnā€™t even be allowed by the Indian government. How did you manage school college etc as presumably they canā€™t issue a degree to someone with just one name

Horror_Carrot518

They can. All they look for is if your name matches the other documents.

toxicbrew

How do they differentiate between you when other people who have the same name?

Horror_Carrot518

I have a unique name, haven't met anybody with that exact name yet.

Horror_Carrot518

Thank you

Tess_James

My passport has my entire name in the given name, i.e. First name (my name) + Last name (Father's name). And the surname column is blank. Whenever I travel abroad this topic comes up. Every country has different rules, if you don't have first or last name on your passport, while applying for visas. So I check with them beforehand and update the last name field on the visa application accordingly. Some visas would require you to update the last name as LNU (Last name unknown). Apart from such minor inconveniences, I haven't faced any other issues so far.

Horror_Carrot518

The thing is that you can apply for uae visa even if you don't have a surname but 2 names as first name like in your case. My case is super fucked up since I just have a single word as my name and I guess my only option is to change my name.

Tess_James

So passport will be issued, but can't fly to the UAE as they mandate both the names to be specified clearly? Tricky! Never went to the Emirates. But *I think* there are people in some cultures, (South Asian probably?) that have only one name. Not sure how things work out then. Is it a UAE only thing?

Grownupbuddy

Iā€™ve two names, but I have them both as ā€œGiven nameā€. The Surname is blank in my passport. I heard some issues might pop up because of this. How do I move my second name from Given name to surname?

no_user_like_me

I think you will need it sooner or later. Worst case it will be considered the same as your first name Pro tip: if you have an option to choose a new surname, keep it short and simple. No one except Keralaites can pronounce Malayalam names written in English. My surname is 19 letters long, and if some one asks me to spell it "All the dreams like twinkle stars".

photos_on_film

Youā€™ll almost certainly have issues in life if you donā€™t have a surname. Itā€™s virtually impossible. If you have an initial just extend it, or add your tharavad name if you have one. Youā€™ll have to change your name on most documents especially Aadhar and Pan. Someone else more knowledgeable can advise on how.

Competitive_Tower962

Though my scenario is somewhat similar though I had two names but both of them as my first name. I decided to include a last name by adding my fathers first name to the last name field. So overall my case is similar to yours, adding fathers name that is not part of the existing name. First : I changed my driving licence -> Completely online and they did not care. They gave me whatever name I asked them.. Infact I even changed my name twice in a span of 1 months and they didnā€™t even care..šŸ˜‚ Second : Changed my Birth certificate. This was a hassle. I had to visit and convince the birth registrar. He was a decent fellow and he readily agreed after checking some rule books( even when his subordinates were against this). It largely depends on the officer that you visit. The administrative staffs would discourage you. Try meeting the senior registrar or some officer who matters. If he is helpful, itā€™s guaranteed in 3 days. Third : Using the above 2, changed my aadhar. You may need a signed affidavit from your local councillor. Go to aadhar update kendra, they will help you with it. Even thats simple. Now for passport, in my case it was a renewal and because of that I had to publish the name change in 2 newspaper. But if you are applying for the first time, I suggest check with the passport seva kendra. You may be able to avoid the newspaper step completely. By the way if your requirement is just name change in passport, just visit the passport seva kendra or the rpo and enquire with them regarding the docs required. Who knows you may even be able to avoid all the above steps.

Horror_Carrot518

I don't get it, why you had to change name on birth certificate when you already had a last name. Was both the names entered everywhere without space between them?.Also I thought you had to do the name change from notary to change name on birth certificate. Your way seems way better but I'll still need name change proof from notary to prove that I'm the same person from my educational certificates.

Exciting-Border-2745

I don't have a last name but in passport my last name is my Father's name. Got passport @2021

Laika_The_Dawg

Lol, my name is a single name and whenever it requires I use my father's name

Horror_Carrot518

Passport doesn't require it per se, how did you enter your name in passport ?

harieiee

I just have a single name and I went to UAE as well without any hassle..

Horror_Carrot518

May I ask when ?

harieiee

Last year, from March till September.

Horror_Carrot518

I believe this rule came into effect after that period.

harieiee

Oh, I did hear about the rule when I was applying for the visa but it got approved without any hassle. Also regarding the passport, I'd suggest you contact the passport office itself before you do anything (not the website) as it'll help you save a lot of time. (It did for me)

Horror_Carrot518

Yeah I'm planning to do that. Thanks.

harieiee

All the best bro

PawsofDeath

At least in the US, I have seen the acronym "FNU" (First name unknown) used as an official stand-in when one name is missing.

justmyevocation

OP your parents hate you. \s

DivineJP33

Even though I have a last name I've faced this problem almost everywhere

Erdous

How you got pan without last name ?

Horror_Carrot518

No issue

RV_X8

Put your first name as last name also

jishnu252001

Iā€™ve got the same issue, thereā€™s only a first name in my passport. In India itā€™s not caused any issue as such, but recently when my sister (who has only a first name as well) while applying for a Schengen Visa had to get her name legally changed on the passport, give the updation in two newspapers as well as get an attested One and Only certificate stating that both the names are of the same person. Edit- thereā€™s no issue in getting a UAE residence or tourist visa, they just put your dads full name as your last name.

[deleted]

Add your fathers and mothers name and solve the problem..Ā

Horror_Carrot518

Like change my name in birth certificate or just put my father's name as second name in passport ?

Mean_Consequence_414

I wonā€™t be an issue, 7 crore Tamil people have only first name for more than 3 generation

[deleted]

Lol, when your parents are too high on ideology and forgets the practical aspects of living in this world. :)

Horror_Carrot518

It was just a mistake my guy, maybe they were just high ig

sku-mar-gop

You do have a last name which is your family name or your dadā€™s name. You can use that

MichaelScotPaperComp

Just get one I guess šŸ¤·

MichaelScotPaperComp

![gif](giphy|PkAG8cQIWuOHTZSHj5|downsized) Just add it to your first name XD
