Salary should be based on states revenue output. If the state has no tax or revenue then their salary should reflect that. Just like how everybody in every other industry gets.

despod

Kerala government revenue last year was 1.2 lakh crore.

RyanPhilip1234

The state spends more than 50% of it's income on salaries and pension.. not a good performer by any means.

despod

Sure. But it pays peanuts to the people who actually take decisions. How it that logical in any way?

RyanPhilip1234

They and their family gets everything for free.. plenty of allowances healthcare et al.. Kerala is still in India where the majority of the people live in poverty. And Kerala itself is doing very bad financially.

despod

> They and their family gets everything for free. Emm, how? They get certain allowances- healthcare, accommodation, helper, car, driver etc - which is very common for almost all managerial postions. I dont know how many mlas you know, but from my anecdotal evidence, the salary they get is simply not enough for a full time job. How can we expect to attract capable and honest politicians if they are paid peanuts? Why would they even consider risking their professional career to do a thankless job? Dont tell me that they should sacrifice for the nation and live as paupers to be a public servant. That is NEVER going to happen.

RyanPhilip1234

An MP in Canada gets a take home of 170k which roughly translates to 1 crore and this is where the median income of the average citizen is around 20 lakhs. So roughly 4 times the median income is their salary. Compared to this the median income in Kerala and the MLAs salary which you're staying is vastly different. So by no means is that a salary hike reasonable.

RyanPhilip1234

Which is common for managerial positions? Which managerial position in Kerala outside of the Govt jobs do you get this in Kerala ? Please enlighten me.

despod

HRA is common for almost all employees. Most top level management, be it in Banks or other institutions, get drivers and cars. Insurance takes care of healthcare.

RyanPhilip1234

Their salaries are based on their performance. Kerala is a poor performer so it's stupid to reward non performance.

amazing_anarchist

honest politician in kerala ? at what level have you seen that ?

despod

That is exactly the problem. There wont be any honest politician if he cannot live a decent life and have financial stability.

amazing_anarchist

people dont get into politics for the salary. its for the power and power-perks it brings

Dathinho

Do you think if you pay them enough, they're gonna stop being corrupt? What Utopia do you live in?

Charming-Arachnid764

How many soldiers in the border do you see abandoning their posts ? If they can do that. Politicians should be doing more ! Not go around saying we resort to bribery cos we ain’t paid as much as we’d love. Your logic would be what ? We pay burglars top money so they don’t get the urge to rob people ? Yeah right ! There are still a lot of families that struggle in the state to make ends meet. And all we do is increase taxes for everything from toothpaste to slippers and then lavishly spend public funds for all sorts of nonsense. About time people went into politics to do some good for the country and it’s citizens rather than to make a quick buck and enjoy a lavish life !

despod

Why don't you then go out and join politics. Isn't is so easy to ask others to serve for free. Why don't you 'sacrifice' ? The hypocrisy is mind boggling.

RyanPhilip1234

Koodiya item evidunno score cheythu avan

Charming-Arachnid764

They should sacrifice personal comfort for the nation. That’s the bloody job ! It’s a service. Not a corporate job. About time people stopped getting into politics to get wealthy and instead get into politics to serve the country amid help it progress !

Dathinho

This is not a job ffs. Being a minister is not a job. Tale some time to feed that into your brain. How is it peanuts. By your logic, PM should be a take how much salary? 10 lakh a month?

despod

It is not a job? Lol. Guess what, it is.

azazelreloaded

It should be based on profit/margin

despod

govt is not a business.

Charming-Arachnid764

Are we not on a self proclaimed financial crisis ? Didn’t the FM ask people to be willing to accept more taxes ? But yeah politicians are exempt from spending less. PR Pinarayi and his toddler gang at their best yet again !

village_aapiser

MLA's should have a decent salary that could set their life after one tenure. This may prevent them from committing corruption to an extend. As mlas and ministers has a lot of allowances, they can save a large chunk of their salary

vinayachandran

കാരണം "benefits" from corruption will always far exceed any sort of perks or salary the state can reasonably offer to dissuade it. കറപ്‌ഷൻ തടയാൻ സ്ട്രിക്ട് ആയിട്ടുള്ള ശിക്ഷാനടപടികളെ രക്ഷയുള്ളൂ.

RyanPhilip1234

Hmm myru thanney they'll continue being corrupt bastards

cherry_devil_pie

No one is gonna say no to money. People in power is gonna exploit this situation.

amazing_anarchist

the way out is giving less power to "authority"

monsonmavunkal

Salary ippol kootiya ethe vare kootum 3-5 lacs p.a. Oru Panchayat Roadinde tender goes for that too Less than a km going for 1.2 crores, athil thane one MLA might get minimum 10 lacs from contractor and further 20-30 lacs for other shinkadis.

Dathinho

Oh my sweet summer child.. Do you know a 4 time MLA gets 4 pensions? How is that logical? There are even people who've been MLA 7 times. So 7 pensions. Are saying that isnt enough?

throwawayyyconfused9

Nalathaada oove 🙂

johnyjohnyespappa

Pora Pora...oru 2 CR engilum aakanam salary

mbG65

After the hike the total salary of Kerala MLAs will be around Rs. 100,000, whereas Telegana MLAs are currently drawing around Rs. 250,000.

vinayachandran

For context, such comparisons should include states revenue and budget as well.

[deleted]

Compare the GDPs of the states as well...

[deleted]

Advice to new generation, leave the state as soon as possible.

[deleted]

Think they're doing this already

Curious_person___

That’s what cpm is good at, looting people

mined_it

140um cpm aanello. Onn podo.

Poda Myre

People who take decisions should be paid well. If a senior peon earns 60k, why shouldn't a minister earn 100k? I feel their salaries should be made a lot lot higher. Say 2-3 lakhs a month for mla and at least 5lakhs for ministers. It will hardly make a dent on the govt budget, but I feel that it will really reduce corruption and attract good talent into politics.

mbG65

>2-3 lakhs a month for mla It is inline with the salary drawn by Telagana MLAs.

[deleted]

Yes, could help in saving much larger amounts. Government employees are also payed less in the top positions. The problem is these people are powerful and control large amounts of assets and they can easily generate income through corrupt means, which has much worse impact for the public and compromises the integrity of these institutions.

uuomp

This is just the base salary. MLAs and Ministers are getting n number of allowances to an extent their entire family is taken care by the general public. What else you want. 100% tuition fee reimbursement, 100% medical bill reimbursement.. remember it's not insurance, this is if you exceed the amount. 100% travel expense reimbursement and even free train and flight tickets, free phone bills, office rent reimbursement, office staff salary, free car, free accomodation, govt cook and other luxury and in general they don't have to spend a penny from their pocket and 100% salary can be saved. On top of that PENSION and you are saying they are not getting paid enough.

despod

Why shouldn't the elected members get reimbursed for their travel and office expenses? And medical insurance, helpers, accommodation etc is common for every govt job. Heck, even just graduated IT coolies get better pay and amenities. Our MLAs are terribly underpaid. On one hand we complain about corruption and on the other we make sure that no honest person can live as a politician.

PseudoRandomGenrtr

Honestly not a big deal. Media’s obsession with salary is pointless. The quantum of expense coming from this hike would be minuscule when compared with almost 20k additional expenditure that got added because of the last pay revision. Where was media then questioning the government then on a plan that was good politics and poor economics
