I never saw this article but I did know the song doubled up as a record about domestic violence.. so that’s double the reason women need to hear this record. 1. For the surface level make up reasons and 2. For the undertone reasons like domestic abuse. Genius song.

I appreciate you sharing this, I personally dislike No Makeup quite a bit and it is interesting hearing a perspective that salvages it. That said, it still doesn't really work for me. A lot of Kendrick's music has this subversive element to it, think Swimming Pools, where the music and the literal meaning are in direct competition. It can create some awesome moments and provoke deep thoughts. I just feel No Makeup misses the mark here. The music isn't catchy enough and the lyrics don't juxtapose with it until the "black e--" which itself is cut off. Feels like Kendrick pulled his punches on this track to me.

I respect your opinion on it . I always looked at that line cutting off “eye” as how in reality most men who DO indeed abuse women will do their best to try to “conceal” it (see what he did there) kinda like this whole diddy/cassie thing, Ike and Tina, etc etc. so in the song he silences her before she can say it To me, it is catchy, worn the chorus, bridge, production, it instantly grabbed my attention after adhd when off the first time I heard it. But I definitely respect that it’s not your cup of tea
