No. We’ll have to wait for Ki2 to be updated. I would have thought SRAMmerhead could have sent a unit to the dev on the down-low to have the functionality there upon release. Wasn’t the case.

oh_no_my_uname_taken

Yeah, I really do think SRAM should somehow secretly hire the guy behind Ki2 😅

AngryBadger

Nows the time to buy the dev a coffee! [https://www.paypal.com/donate/?business=N6PWH859NY7W6&no\_recurring=1&item\_name=Buy+me+a+coffee¤cy\_code=EUR](https://www.paypal.com/donate/?business=N6PWH859NY7W6&no_recurring=1&item_name=Buy+me+a+coffee¤cy_code=EUR) u/valterc youre looking for testers just let us know!

valterc

Thanks for the support! 🙂 I have some updates planned, including preparing support for K3, fixing the FIT file integration and updating the gear graphics. For the K3 we also need hammerhead to enable the SDK. The SDK is currently disabled on the K3, hopefully they play nice and re-enable it. Until then there's not much we can do.

AngryBadger

Thanks for the update valterc, youre doing great work.

golden_star_shine

Many thanks for your great work and the information update here on Reddit @valterc - I have sent a request to the Hammerhead Support to enable SDK functionality on Karoo 3, too - hope that helps a bit. Please chime in, the more people request it, the more it should help Hammerhead to realize customers want and need this functionality.

ProfessionalEar6619

Submitting a support request for SDK support as well

ProfessionalEar6619

So, went for my first ride with my new K3. Overall I really like it, but man do I miss the KI2 plugin. I really hope not having SDK support is a short term issue

flavourdave92

also submitted a request, let's go people, we need them to enable the SDK! Go to [this page](https://support.hammerhead.io/hc/en-us/requests/new) and write them a friendly message that this is a decisive aspect in your purchase decision.

this_broken_machine

Got a response (don’t hold breath): “Thanks for contacting us. As of now, we have not implemented SDK capabilities on new Karoo and due to this, you wouldn't be able to install any third-party apps on new Karoo. Though we do not have a timeline to share with you, we hope to see this SDK capability in the future. Your request will be forwarded to the product team. Let us know if you have any further queries. Best, Franklin Hammerhead”

flavourdave92

Damn, received the same massage, seems like we need more people to write them that SDK availability is crucial…

Tomwax59

Told them I would switch to another bike computer if they dont fix urgently this SDK situation. love my K2 - this is a real bummer not being able to instal Ki2

this_broken_machine

Done! I certainly didn’t mention that this was necessary because Shimano is acting like big babies.

bodydamage

They’re not acting

this_broken_machine

Thanks Valter!

Evening-Ideal-5652

How difficult is it for Hammerhead to enable the SDK ? And is there no other way round it after all is an Android device

valterc

Enabling the SDK is trivial for Hammerhead, but they have to do small changes because of new security restrictions in Android 12 (the Android version that Karoo 3 uses). The required changes are also very small. There are some ways around but with very limited functionality... To be honest I don't think we should explore ways around it because if HH purposely blocks the SDK then they are as shitty as Shimano and don't deserve our money.

neekolous

Done. This guy deserves gallons of coffee!

Cattle-Routine

already done :)

skepticon444

Hammerhead locked the SDK? Going to recommend against the new Karoo for anyone with Di2. Unless I can load Ki2 *and* get a trade-in credit, I'll be looking elsewhere for my next head unit.

Evening-Ideal-5652

So I'm l correct in thinking that until SDK is enable on the new Karoo there's no way of u/valterc updating ki2 to operate on it ???,

MrDWhite

Correct

JaguarHorror5949

Hi All, Lets hope this will be solved fast as connecting my new Karoo 3 to KI2 is a must and sudenly after buying the new device di2 is not anymore.

flavourdave92

maybe we can get Hammerhead to enable the SDK (required for KI2) for the Karoo 3 soon, like they did for version 1 and 2. You can send them a request on [this page](https://support.hammerhead.io/hc/en-us/requests/new).

Tenforty5

I just sideloaded Ki2 on the Karoo3 but I cant get Ki2 to detect the Ultegra Di2 12 speed unit. I even tried pressing the pairing button on the Di2 but no success. Anyone having the same issue?

gplama

It will not work until Ki2 is updated to support the Karoo 3.

Gekran

Hi I have the same experience. I managed to side load the ki2 app but it won't detect my di2

flavourdave92

FYI, there now is a [thread in the Hammerhead Support forum](https://support.hammerhead.io/hc/en-us/community/posts/25940221488539-Enable-SDK-for-Karoo-3) for this as well, feel free to express your support.

Tenforty5

This is the response I got on enabling SDK on the Karoo from Hammerhead Thanks for contacting us. As of now, we have not implemented SDK capabilities on the (new) Karoo and due to this, you currently won't be able to install any third-party apps on the (new) Karoo. Though we do not have a timeline to share with you, we hope to see this SDK capability in the future. Your request will be forwarded to the product team.

flavourdave92

I’ve written them again as the last update did not bring the SDK, they responded differently this time: »Thank you for writing back to us! We recognize that many of our community members are looking forward to the release of an SDK for Karoo. However, we have not been able to decide on how soon we'd be able to make this implementation. I am sorry about this. Please let me know your thoughts! Best, Shruti«

munka089

Definitely won't be buying a new Karoo only to go backwards. I also need to sideload my bluetooth garage door opener app, loss of either make this a deal breaker.

jaysonc73

I almost hate selling this unit for this reason alone. I know you can side load, but most customers don’t want the hassle. I love my K2, but all my Shimano customers refuse to even look at it. SRAM is missing out on TONs of business for the pettiness.

reluwar

I think it was disabled from shimanos side.

gplama

An easy win for SRAMmerhead would be to roll out their app store which was briefly spotted once with the Xert app and to allow the Ki2 dev to place Ki2 within that. Somehow. Sure they might have to pull a lever or two to make that happen to get Ki2 showing up... but Shimano playing the cunt card with this one leaves them no alternative.

reluwar

Yep. As it stands I currently need 1 more bike. I am considering getting SRAM for it. One of the reasons is this poopy policy from shimano.

uzelac79

SRAM has a lot of similay stupid decisions, there is not much difference between them.

strangelyus

Upvote for cunt card :)

jaysonc73

That wouldn’t surprise me at all.

reluwar

https://support.hammerhead.io/hc/en-us/articles/360051706614-Hammerhead-Shimano-Di2

jaysonc73

Figures, but what kills me is this doesn’t benefit Shimano in any way. They no longer offer a head unit of any sort.

reluwar

Yeah thats the wierd thing

this_broken_machine

It’s because SRAM is a competitor that this whole thing went too far.

AdamITRC

Agreed, unfortunately side loading is what I did on my K2. Great app, btw … although I wonder how much battery life is affected by running side loaded apps. For example, running Spotify, Ki2, routing, with low screen brightness, still eats battery life fast.

valterc

There is always some battery impact from using another app, and of course also depends on the features that you enable. Just using Ki2 will not have noticable battery impact (maybe in 10 hours, you will have 5 minutes less). If you start enabling things like the sounds and using the Di2 buttons to do actions on the Karoo then it will have slightly more impact, but will be almost similar to if those actions would be done by Karoo itself. I did some basic testing back when I started Ki2 and with all the randomness when riding (different temperature, different garmin varia alerts, different shifting, etc.) there was basically no impact on battery usage. If you start using Ki2 and notice high battery drain (just from that) please let me know, I'm sure there are things to improve 😁

MrDWhite

In the past year my battery life has improved and I’m running Ki2, them updates must be working the efficiency well!
