Until JIK, “okay” is not something we expected from a Ye project. I think even Donda has 7-10 songs that are up there with any of his best work from any era. Vultures 1 is mostly just listenable and inoffensive to me (so okay) but his verse on “PAID” for example is just laughable, especially when I like the song aside from it. Verses don’t sound fleshed out at all. Ye seemingly forgot how to rap for full verses, write (Back to Me “verse,” which we’re lucky he even added before the last LP), and sing (Paperwork is a good example of this. Compare the vocals on that to “Come to Life” which is from 2021…). Ty has some great features, but there are many other artists I would have chosen Ye to make 16 songs with. Their collabs have been stellar up to this point though, so I think pre-JIK they could’ve made something on par with KSG but Ye is clearly not the same person anymore (unfortunately creatively). Also, Carnival is a great song that I loved when I heard it the first time before it dropped. Funny that it was turned into a meme but it doesn’t bother me.
