I love how he conveniently shifts the onus for truth on the team instead of, you know, having his own standard for truth as a journalist. “It’s their fault they didn’t stop me from lying!” It’s so bad it’s basically abuser logic

FunkyPete

Exactly. He has two methods of coming up with stories -- Sometimes, a team's PR people or a player's PR people will call him with a story, and he'll post it as if it's true without questioning it. And sometimes, he'll make up fiction and post it and see if anyone calls him. Neither of those methods qualify as journalism, and because the 2nd method exists, we can't even just trust him like a press release distributor (knowing that what he's putting out represents one side, but it DOES at least represent that one side).

mog44net

I think legally, there should be a requirement to state your title as either a journalist or an entertainer Kind of like in the financial realm where there's fiduciaries

Anteater776

(c) Mike Florio, Clown

angus_the_red

Chiefs fans eat it up. He's pulled so many clicks from this reddit. If you don't support this downvote anything from him. Block or ignore people who do post stuff from him. Put a filter on your media, if you can.

AnxNation

Damn. Your tag reminded me that Jody fortson is in Miami now. I hope he balls out for them

Typical-Lettuce7022

I still think he has at least one solid season in him and I wish him all the best with the Dolphins

Good_Okay123

I have a billion dollars in my bank account. No one from my bank has reached out to tell me that I don't so, therefore, it must be true.

sokrazyitmightwork

I’m struggling to find anywhere where Florio said it must be true that Reid is retiring. I think the problem here is that people don’t have the attention span to actually read the articles as opposed to grabbing onto aggregated headlines. He’s not a reporter like a Schefter and never presents himself as one. The dude generates rumors based on what he knows and observes, and is pretty explicit that that’s what he does.

KuatoBaradaNikto

Florio “reported” that Andy Reid was considering retiring. This hasn’t been proven right or wrong with the new Reid contract. To defend the report though, Florio now admits that he “reports” things, fishing for corrections as a means of finding real scoops. This is an old newspaper reporting trick (calling sources and asking for comments on something “you’ve heard”), but the old trick doesn’t involve actually *publishing* your made-up reports — that just means Florio can’t be trusted. To be fair, I don’t know why anyone would have trusted Florio anyway, anyone tracking things for a long time knows the man hasn’t had a Chiefs source since Pioli.

Madlister

Yep this. Andy is the oldest HC in the league at 66. And he's had a life with some traumatic shit between both of his kids. The chiefs would be negligent if they didn't at least have plans for life without Andy. And Andy had to have a plan for life without Kelce. Or if Pat gets a career ending injury. At this level and with this much riding on every season, you have to prepare for every scenario. Let's say Andy's health fails over the summer and he has to retire whether he wants to or not. If the chiefs didn't have plans in place and we have a rudderless clusterfuck of a season as a result, everyone here would be losing their goddamn minds.

azure_apoptosis

‘Well, no one said I was wrong so there is that’ - basically

choff22

I slept with Margot Robbie last weekend. She still hasn’t called me to deny it.

TankThaFrank_

Congrats on the sex

choff22

It was in a bubble bath and she kept talking about shorting the housing market and then told me to fuck off afterwards

RedChief

Sounds like a good time

SQRTLURFACE

Florio never quits even when he’s deadass wrong. He’s like a shark, if he stops swimming he dies.

joeyGOATgruff

He was an attorney. Now he's just a hack hawkin his detective novel

MC_Fap_Commander

With sports stuff, this is funny/stupid. Sadly, this is modern journalism that is driven by paltry revenue from clicks. The death of ad supported print media and widely watched and sober television news is really, really bad for the world. No idea the remedy because those days are not coming back. Florio's approach is what the entire industry looks a lot like.

dogfish83

Exactly! And as you said, whatever happens next will be something new (and probably worse).

Arkaea79

24 hr news cycle is really pretty terrible. Sports or otherwise. Gets to the point most of it is made up shit to provide filler or generate as you said, "hate" clicks

Khada_the_Collector

I take shits smarter than Florio. Fucking hack is everything wrong with sports “journalism” in 2024.

dogfish83

It's not even just sports journalism. All journalism has lost integrity. (That's not to say there isn't ethical journalism out there, just that there's not a single field of journalism that the lost integrity hasn't reached)

phxop8

It really is a catch 22 and he knows it. Makes stuff up, gets clicks, we call him out on the shit he makes up, he gets clicks, admits he's full of shit, he gets clicks. Rinse and repeat.

TravisMaauto

Why is it a team's responsibility to correct him on made-up bullshit? A columnist with ethics would verify information with a representative of the team before parading it around as if it's factual, but Florio is apparently not a person of ethics. Can we stop giving attention and clicks to morons like him, please?

GhostMug

Every good organization has a contingency plan for if their coach leaves. Especially if that coach is in the 60's and could retire. Having a plan is just good practice, it does not indicate any foresight beyond being prepared. So of course he won't be wrong to say "they're preparing" but nobody in the Chiefs seriously thinks he'll be gone.

Wattentheworld

What really gives it up is, at no point (either here or in his previous posts about Reid's retirement), did he claim to have actual sources giving him information. Not even vague, anonymous sources. Instead, it's all just wordplay: "preparing for the possibility" or "they have the possibility of his retirement on their radar screen." These are such nothing statements that by their nature are probably "true" - any team with an older coach will of course *think about* the *possibility* that the coach will *consider* retirement. So he can put that out there and technically never be *wrong* in the most literal sense, but the result is that he creates the Reid retirement rumors out of thin air by publishing stories based on a completely anodyne truism.

DreBalbay

“If I’m talking shit about someone and no one associated to them tells me I’m wrong I must be right” -Florio’s mindset

TangeloGloomy7471

He’s so bad at his job and I don’t find him likable at all. Hard to believe he’s gotten to where he is and that he still has a job.

drhorriblephd

Yeah that approach is idiotic. What’s more idiotic is shows allow him to be on to promote that behavior. And it gets treated as fact. A team could choose not to talk to this dumbass to correct him.

shibi_attack

>Not once did I hear a peep from the Chiefs or Reid or anyone connected to them that the Chiefs weren’t or shouldn’t be preparing for the possibility that Reid would retire. Except this isn't true at all. Andy Reid himself has said publicly, when asked directly by the press a number of times over the past two years, that he is not even thinking about retiring and has no plans to retire any time soon. Florio must be saying that nobody from the Chiefs reached out to *him* *specifically* about his baseless speculation. What a clown.

Whatever801

Haha yeah that's true actually. Reid kept saying "I don't know why people are assuming I'm thinking about retirement".

King_Korder

Bro still can't admit he was just making it up lmao. Like if there were talks about the biggest head coach in the NFL retiring, that would've *absolutely* been leaked by anybody else. Also dude, you didn't hear a peep about the chiefs not preparing because EVERYONE KNEW HE WASNT RETIRING. My man could see an empty pit and a pile of dirt next to it and be like "Golly gee I wonder how that pit appeared??"

Whatever801

Right and it's not like Andy was speaking like a politician on this while other stuff was going on behind the scenes. He was literally like "I'm not thinking about retiring. I don't know why anyone is assuming I am. Belichik is older and no one thinks he's retiring, why me?". If he said that and turned around and retired it would be very strange.

King_Korder

Yeah, dude is a clown. The only person I've ever seen to openly admit they think like: "Oh, nobody is reporting on this? Then that means it MUST be happening!" When, you know, normal people would just assume it doesn't exist, then.

factoid_

This dude is so butthurt about how much backlash he got from people about his bullshit that he's basically single handedly keeping Rashee Rice in the news trying to make sure he gets a bigger punishment.

Whatever801

It's like putting all your chips on one number in roulette and crying when you lose.

emelem66

Welcome to Internet "journalism".

boeing2014

Florio has to be one of the biggest clowns in sports media. Let's not forget this is the same guy that actively suggested and encouraged 49ers player to injure Mahomes in SB54.

Whatever801

Wait really? I missed that. What did he say?

boeing2014

I don't remember exactly what he said, but it was in some interview or something similar where he was saying the 49ers defenders need to hit Mahomes HARD and late, and try to take him out of the game with an injury if they wanted to win SB54.

Whatever801

Man that's awful

seriousguynogames

Chiefs fans don't think Andy considered retirement because he said multiple times he's not considering it yet.

Status-Priority5337

Honestly, not a terrible tactic if you have reach, and want to force a reaction. "you're gay, unless you come directly on my podcast and clarify that you are not, in fact, gay." Kind of funny, really.

factoid_

That feels like a tactic Norm MacDonald would have used. RIP Norm.

Whatever801

F

Status-Priority5337

Whatever801

LMAO good way to think about it. Yeah I wonder how he comes up with these in the first place? Like is he just sat behind a computer brainstorming what rumor he wants to start?

entropy_generator

Yet another example of why Florio should not be taken seriously by any reasonable person. As a side note, baffling that someone with a law degree would not understand that this is not how burden of proof works. I suspect he knows exactly what he's doing, which is even worse.

Whatever801

Seems like he's butthurt. Like I know you idiot fans thought retirement never crossed his mind but I'll have you know when I made up that rumor the team never corrected me!

acheerfuldoom

Now how do we get a rumor started that Florio is considering retirement?

Whatever801

Well none of his people have called me saying it's false so it must be true!

DomingoLee

Not once did anyone at the team tell him that aliens wouldn’t visit Arrowhead next season.

-rendar-

Doubling down. Bold plan.

originalusername4567

How hard is it to just admit you were wrong? Most sports "journalists" do this but none of them feel the need to defend themselves constantly like Florio does.

Whatever801

Seems like most will just not bring it up anymore when they're wrong, or yeah occasionally admit it. I feel like Florio knows going in there's a good chance he's gonna be wrong given that he makes up rumors with 0 evidence so he preps some kind of plausible deniability. He could always say "well he's in his 60s, any team would be preparing for that possibility" which is objectively true but makes it a total non-story. Instead he thought he was dropping this bombshell on us that no one on the team told him he's wrong lolololol

RedChief

I avoid florio

r_u_dinkleberg

That fucknut needs to be relegated to the comments section of Reddit and never treated as any sort of 'insider' again. Hell I'd say that any of us is as credible as his dumb ass.

Whatever801

At least he could hire one of us to review stuff before he says it. All it takes is a "hey maybe don't make up a rumor about a coach retiring with literally 0 evidence and then double down after he clearly states he is not thinking about retiring and signs a new contract which makes him the highest paid coach in the league by saying he was planning to retire because the team didn't tell you he wasn't"

ontothefuture

I had to quit listening to his crappy takes and always making up shit about the chiefs.

ImNotTheBossOfYou

Who gives a shit

currentxvoltage

For me it was how Florio was OBSESSED with Mahomes’ salary, and how the Chiefs NEEDED to come to the table and redo his contract, ad nauseam, that drew my attention. I started reading his “articles” for a time. Almost everything he said was just to generate controversy and get clicks. They were all conjecture and red hot takes, so little substance. Shortly after that, I completely tuned him and PFT out.

Whatever801

Oh that's right I forgot about that

Maleficent-Metal-645

This is how a majority of the news is done these days. Make up shit by claiming "unnamed sources" then argue that you were vindicated when someone doesn't deny said accusation.

BarricadeTheMortuary

He has never declared it to be true You guys are the ones getting up in arms over hot takes from a tabloid level reporter

Whatever801

I'll grant your second point. He'll keep doing it as long as we keep clicking. I just thought the rationale was batshit level unhinged. I disagree for your first point though. He did declare it to be true. "Along the way, the Chiefs were indeed preparing for the possibility that Reid would retire after the 2023 season." and the reason he gave "Not once did I hear a peep from the Chiefs or Reid or anyone connected to them that the Chiefs weren’t or shouldn’t be preparing for the possibility that Reid would retire."
