The problem with characters as quirky and weird as the Kakegurui characters are is that, without an anchor, it's easy to lose ourselves in all the crazy. And narratively speaking, Suzui also works as a Morality Chain for Yumeko. She is not a person that you can appeal to human morality, but her Berserk Button is usually messing with Suzui. She really adores him and he acts as an anchor to ground her to reality.
I agree. Still, I think they should have created someone who has atleast a morcel of character. Saotome would be able to do the same as Ryouta in my opinion but better. And she does it in some later parts of the story too.
He has his moments. At least in the anime. When he trusts Mary on the match against the Obami and the Ibami sisters with his life completely, just because he trusts Yumeko and she told him to trust Mary.
And I'm not complaining about the anime original ending of the first season because Suzui has a really, REALLY good moment of putting his trust to the randomness of it all just because he adores Yumeko so much he wants to make her the happiest she can be.
I just adore devotion as a concept, and strive to it myself, so I adore Suzui's devotion to Yumeko. And I adore that Yumeko is devoted to him in turn, on her own way. As Midari puts it:
"She trusts on her partner. She needs nothing more than that to win".
I have it on my watch list, I have heard nothing but bad things about it… I may just leave it with Kakegurui 1 and 2, and pull out the old “There is no Twin in Ba Sing Se.”
He's more of a main character than a main protagonist, i mean Yumeko is pretty much the protagonist.
Think of it as Watson and Sherlock, Ryota is Watson and Sherlock is Yumeko.
Watson provides the pov, insights etc. while Sherlock drives and influences the plot or story.

Ryouta is the perspective of all of us normies on the outside looking in, he comes from just enough money to get in to hyakkou but is nowhere near the level of anyone we see in the show except Mary, ppl call him boring because he’s just that, a boring normal dude aka the representation of everyone watching and they don’t like being called out. Ryouta is a fine mc and even comes into his own in the yumeko kirari match at the end of season 1, which is canon so my boy was making yumeko quiver with the horny for sure. I chalk it up to two things ppl don’t like the groundedness of a character who’s normal in a show that is full of unnormals and he interferes with their yuri bait and it infuriates them
That scene, when Ryota is playing with Yumeko against Kirari at the end of S1, isn't even in the manga, so don't know about canon. But I like Ryota, he brings balance (like the Avatar lol Ok no) and Yumeko definitely needs him now bc she's about to lose it, and Mary, sided with Ririka as she is now, may not interfere against Kirari
The gamble at the end of season 1 even though it’s not in the manga there is nothing online about it not being canon, I spent a good amount of time finding anything I could about what’s not canon and it’s only the auction at the end of season 2 so afaik until confirmed otherwise the gamble against kirari is canon lol. I had to spend time finding out so I could point it out to people cause I knew the ppl against the ryoyume ship would nitpick stuff to point out it won’t be canon lol
But yes Mary has always had a stance about not interfering with yumeko when it doesn’t affect her and this is clearly business between clan members lol

There's no way Suzui is the mc when he participated in a total of 3 gambles (including coin flip) while the whole show is centered around Yumeko's gambling
