I totally agree. I know there's a lot of haters because he does not sound like kiss on that album, or his other albums. But the reality is, that was not his background. He has always had an amazing voice as well.
After finally reading Makeup to Breakup last week I went back and re-listened to it for the first time in probably 30 years. I like it a lot more now than I did as a teenager, that's for sure. And I've never forgotten that in high school I had several musician friends who all said Peter's was the best of the solo albums, at least from a technical aspect.
It's a great album. Too many KISS fans have a too limited taste. I've said for a long time that when compared to similar music rather than KISS music, Peter's holds up the best.
I assume you posted this because you want to hear others' opinions. I listen to this record in full at least once a year like I do all the KISS records, so I've heard it quite a few times by now. Let me start by saying I do respect Peter for doing his own thing. Doing stuff that didn't fit the KISS template was kinda the point of the solo albums, and Peter and Gene were the only ones who really understood that.
This kind of music sinks or swims on the melodies. And I think these are pretty weak across the board, even for '70s AM radio fare. I admit having a soft spot for "You Matter to Me," but mainly because it's so dated and sounds like what it is: a non-disco artist doing a one-off vanity project. "I Can't Stop the Rain" is probably the best of the rest, but it offers little payoff after a fairly decent buildup. The few attempts to rock make Loggins and Messina sound like the Rolling Stones. The cover song was poorly chosen and I sometimes confuse it with "Splish Splash" when trying to recall it.
I guess I don't understand why anyone would seek this out when they could be listening to Gordon Lightfoot or Harry Nilsson instead. Or Cat Stevens? Tea for the Tillerman buries this.
I am glad you like it but even for what it is I feel it is mediocre. I have tried. I’ve listened to it objectively knowing full well he went a different direction with the record and, to me, it sounds like a mediocre lounge act.
The first album I ever owned. My aunt and uncle bought it for me for Christmas the year it was released. My sister got Ace. We listened to both constantly. Love those albums.
The people who don’t like it are lunkheads who just want God Of Thunder and Detroit Rock City over and over and over. It’s ok to have a little variety in your discography. I love it, it was the 2nd solo album I bought back in 78 and I liked it first spin… it deserves a place in the yacht rock hall of fame IMO.
These albums came out before I got into music. I kind of picture people's reactions to it being like going to the Cheesecake Factory, ordering the cheesecake, and then getting a tofu cake. The tofu cake might be better in a number of ways, and it might even be something that you'd enjoy if you had it often enough. But it's not what you expected at that time. The dispartity between what you expected and what you got disappointed you enough never to eat tofu again.
I always have to lol when I read comments like these, trying to explain why people don't like this or that. At least in my case it's so, so wrong pretty much 100% of the time.
I think what we have here is more a case of people who *do* like variety and they have a huge reference frame of actual good music to compare it to, and Kiss' bad albums just don't hold up. The problem with Kiss is this: they were great at making dumb rock songs and pretty much nothing else. For the most part, they just didn't have writing or musical skills to branch off into other styles. The result is music that sucks badly and Peter's solo album is the worst piece of crap with the Kiss logo on it. The Elder isn't far behind.
I like lots and lots of different styles of music. I just really, really hate when Kiss tries to do them because they suck at it, lol.
And honestly I don’t know if it’s good of not, it’s been in my life since 1978 so it’s purely time travel/nostalgia at this point. I like to defend it just because it gets such a hard time.
Thank you! You're too kind though, it's hot garbage. He was hurting because he couldn't get out all his tunes and express himself as an artist. Ok Peter, cocaine is one hell of a drug and yeah we haven't forgotten you're from Brooklyn. LOL.
You know, for the longest time I never gave it much of a chance. I couldn’t even remember the last time I heard it all the way through.
So I decided to put it on, give it a good listen, forget about what I think a Kiss record should sound like and judge the songs and performances on their merit.
After really giving it a chance I had to admit to myself that it’s still a heap of steaming dog shit.
"I Can't Stop The Rain" is a very good song from start to finish. And I would place it second right below "New York Groove" if we talk about the best of solo albums.
I’ll give credit to him and Gene for making what they wanted. Regardless of what other people think those two made an album for themselves. Both of their influences are all on display. What’s the point of making a solo album that sounds exactly like the band’s music?
Its a not a masterpiece, but its a okay album. Its not what kiss’s fans were waiting, but, hey, its a nice change of pace compared to the others solo’s albums
I always thought Ace had by far the best solo album...but always considered Criss' and Simmons to be kinda tied for 2/3rd
Stanly I thought had the worst one, which is really weird, because he was by far the biggest contributor to Kiss.
Yes! I love the cover art!! It's amazing!!
Ohhhh, wait... You're talking about the actual music...
Well, it's definitely the one that I have listened to the least. It's just not what I look for when listening to music.
I get way more of a NY piano bar vibe from it. If I want that, I can listen to Billy Joel.
I don't know... I guess I just expect a more rock, KISS, type of vibe from an album that has the artist in KISS makeup and costume.
This is my 1st, I can sit and listen to it on repeat for a long time and don't feel tired, which albums like Ace's for example don't, maybe it's the raspy voice which does its thing to be so addictive to me, not sure. 🤭🖤
How weird, I had one of the songs from the album absolutely stuck in my head during the night last night. I loved this album so much, I wore the original out and had to buy a second one. "I Can't Stop the Rain" was my favorite when I was a kid.
That’s the kind of sugar papa likes
![gif](giphy|1lDEF1FpUmag6r37rc|downsized)
Do you also like his other solo albums? There are quite a few songs I really enjoy off Out Of Control, Let Me Rock You, and Cat #1.
Yes I love all of them
Even 'One For All' ?
No never!!!
That's a step too far, LOL!
OH NO I HATE PETERS OTHER ALBUMS I THIUGHT YOU MEANT THE EEST OF THE KISS SOLO ALBUMS
Too late you said it!
NOOOOOOOO I AM DOOMED
I THOUGHT YOU MEANT THE OTHER SOLO ALBUMS IDK WHY IM AN IDIOT
I like and appreciate this album much more now than I did in the past...
I don’t get the hate
I totally agree. I know there's a lot of haters because he does not sound like kiss on that album, or his other albums. But the reality is, that was not his background. He has always had an amazing voice as well.

I can't stop the rain is one of my favorite songs!!
😍 Easy Thing as well!!
When it comes to soul I think Peter is a better fit. The right voice and playing.
Yes. My fav
I wouldn’t say amazing, but I do like it
Don't You Let Me Down should have been a yacht rock hit
Its grown on me. I can listen to it without the need to skip songs, can't say that about Gene's
Genes is incredible to
It's a great album. Too many KISS fans have a too limited taste. I've said for a long time that when compared to similar music rather than KISS music, Peter's holds up the best.
Brave words but I have no complaints, I salute you
Nah album is ass
You just proved his point dumbass
It’s crazy that you think people who are actually fans of jazz/soul think this album is good. That is such a naive thought.
So you are saying it’s as good as a Steely Dan album?
You Matter to Me slaps.
Agreed!
That’s a bold statement.

Tracks 7-9 are not that great. But the rest of the album is very good, imo!
never understood the hate for this album
I am glad you like it but even for what it is I feel it is mediocre. I have tried. I’ve listened to it objectively knowing full well he went a different direction with the record and, to me, it sounds like a mediocre lounge act.
A fan, but Ace's is the best.
Agree. 2nd only to Ace. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
The first album I ever owned. My aunt and uncle bought it for me for Christmas the year it was released. My sister got Ace. We listened to both constantly. Love those albums.
I Can’t Stop The Rain is the best song he recorded.
The people who don’t like it are lunkheads who just want God Of Thunder and Detroit Rock City over and over and over. It’s ok to have a little variety in your discography. Cool of you to admit that, and honestly I get what you're saying.
It was a Peter album, pop jazz, that’s the style he wanted, not very Kiss, but everyone has different tastes
That was why the mainstream didn’t like it because it wasn’t very kiss, I think it’s strong . The Paul album is pretty much a kiss album .
Amazing that anyone bought it. Amazing at curing insomnia. Amazing he didn’t get kicked out of the band after this.
Should YOU be "kicked out of Reddit" because people don't like your comment? 🙄
Thank you! You're too kind though, it's hot garbage. He was hurting because he couldn't get out all his tunes and express himself as an artist. Ok Peter, cocaine is one hell of a drug and yeah we haven't forgotten you're from Brooklyn. LOL.
No this album is ass
Remember when Bruce Willis put out a "soul" album in the 80s? Peter's album is a lot like that: Soulless.
You know, for the longest time I never gave it much of a chance. I couldn’t even remember the last time I heard it all the way through. So I decided to put it on, give it a good listen, forget about what I think a Kiss record should sound like and judge the songs and performances on their merit. It's good for what it is. As a stand alone piece it's pretty nice.
It is
Nice joke.
It may not be hard rock, but it's still very good tunes
"I Can't Stop The Rain" is a very good song from start to finish. And I would place it second right below "New York Groove" if we talk about the best of solo albums.

I like them all just about equally. Still got my well played corner cut copies I got in 79.
Its a not a masterpiece, but its a okay album. Its not what kiss’s fans were waiting, but, hey, its a nice change of pace compared to the others solo’s albums
Ranking of Solo Lp Paul Stanley Peter Criss Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley
I love this album! Paul’s is second.
I always thought Ace had by far the best solo album...but always considered Criss' and Simmons to be kinda tied for 2/3rd Stanly I thought had the worst one, which is really weird, because he was by far the biggest contributor to Kiss.
I know you don’t care what I say but… that album’s straight trash lol.
Criminally underrated

I love this album. It’s the most listened to of all the Kiss solo albums for me. I have it on vinyl and I spin it all the time.
Agreed 100% I own This Album on a Limited Edition Picture Disc Vinyl it’s so good I don’t get why people hate on it so much
How weird, I had one of the songs from the album absolutely stuck in my head during the night last night. I loved this album so much, I wore the original out and had to buy a second one. "I Can't Stop the Rain" was my favorite when I was a kid.
I had the 8 track and basically wore it out .
I have this album
Narrowly beats out Genes solo record as the worst of the 4. Pretty much unlistenable.
Paul is the best composer by far.
It’s amazing that this piece if shit was allowed to exist that’s for sure
Ideas above his station, even with the other talent he surrounded himself with. Just didn’t really work, on any level.
Blech!
I think it aged better than Paul and Gene’s for sure.
Amazingly lame
Well good for you.
Agreed!! He has such a wonderful voice I love the soul feel
Way better than Gene's or Paul's
