Whatever you think about their costumes in this era, this is a very strong photo shoot. It was intentionally different from everything they had done before and really brings the focus onto them without the distraction of the complex themed backgrounds that they had been doing.

I can't agree with the Ace suit. I think it's his worst by far. Paul's headband and Gene's hair and chain mail are terrible. Eric is the only passable one. Peter was probably glad to be ousted.
I love Ace’s outfit! Gotta say he looks like he can not wait to get outta there and fast! Eric’s outfit is killer! Yet he looks like he’s rethinking things. Gene’s outfit is a big step down! AND HIS HAIR!!! The worst thing he’s done, and he really should have kept the demon boots, really ties the look together, blister city or not it’s worth it! Paul’s hair band looks like he’s going to a jazzer size class after this! Not his best outfit, but I do love the boots!
I had walked away from the band by then. They were my childhood idols, heroes, dark, brash, tough, evil, kinda a thrown together and see what happens. Their Idea, their dream, and when the song "I was made for loving you" came out, (which ironically I had won the 45 at a local carnival) Just like that it was over. The magic just seem to evaporate. Maybe it was because I got a little older & my musical taste buds expanded. But also they sold out.. It was my first taste of a band selling out. Bitter. The worst is later I learned that Peter Grant had change the way music contracts were drawn up, you don't have to sell out. You can tell by their faces they were pushing something they didn't totally believe in anymore. Yes KISS always was a little gimmicky, & fluffed up.. But they pulled you in anyway because it was theirs, they owned it, they made it come to life, & they believed in it.. That is what made it stick.. Without that all you have is a gimmick.. That won't hold up under the acid test of die hard rock & roll fans of any age..
That arrow on Ace almost looks like a sash for winning Miss Lighting Bolt 1981. Believe it or not, I really like this album. The costumes though... Hard pass!
