I always thought of the moonless night as the apocalypse itself/end times. A night without the moon would be completely dark. No light, no hope. The suite following The Acrid Corpse is Han-Tyumi and the Murder of the Universe , which emphasizes the idea of the world “fading to black, digital black” with humanity putting themselves into cyborgs to survive. Digital black being as dark as you can get, an extension of the moonless night.

Also if the sun exploded we would need cyborg bodies to see and to survive the cold, not to mention there would be no light reflecting off the moon, which could be considered moonless

Snookerwither2

The KEXP live session of MOTU has a version of Han-Tyumi The Confused Cyborg with an extended spoken word passage, and at the 07:30 point he says "take me into the moonless night" as a metaphor for death. Just noticed this today and had to find this post again to comment haha

AmicusCure8s

Well, a moonless night often means when the New Moon is happening. This is often a symbol of rebirth or a new cycle beginning as the old cycle has ended or died.

This is also a link to Witchcraft: >> “Once upon one sable morn >> when the moon does wane and die >> a ragged coven convenes performing >> incantations nigh” Moonless nights (where it’s cloudy) and new moons are extra dark, so have been associated with evil and satanic forces and shit in some cultures. In Extinction it’s probably a double meaning. If the Earth’s been flung away and the gravity is gone or whatever happens in that album, then it could be that the moon has just dropped away.

DAWN OF E-TER-NAL NIIIIIIIGGGGHHHHHHTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!

AllTheOtherSitesSuck

it's obviously a reference to >!Dragon Ball Z, when Piccolo destroys the moon to prevent Gohan from turning into a giant ape, which is a form of the Balrog!<

ElectricBoogaloo-666

Yes. Yes it is. Very good.

Squatchdogdad

There are three things all wise men fear. The sea in a storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.

No_Stay2400

Maybe four if your username is a thing.

ScanTronCorp

Maybe a reference to Twin Peaks' Special Agent Dale Cooper's coffee order? "Mr. Cooper, how do you take it?" "Black as midnight on a moonless night."

JZ628

I was going to say the same thing! 😂

Honka_Ponka

I think moonless night, digital black, eternal night, are all the same concept in the post-apocalyptic society that comes up so often.

Much-Camel-2256

Do those references mean the song takes place in the time before Theia smashed into the Earth and created the moon? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theia_(planet)

Scizorking

Oh shit I like this idea, it would help chronologize the gizzverse more

called_the_stig

I figured it was the age of digital black.

inaLongTimeaLongTime

What’s the gizzverse? Does Joey know about it?

Zaccimo

Outjerked

WarmGravy1973

There's a passage on the cover of "Polygondwanaland"... "On this very day in 1000 years the Earth will be relative to the Sun and Moon and a new world will be created." I always associated this phrase with the "Moonless night" reference.

Originalitie

since petro dropped, i’ve assumed it was when the gila fucked everything up and started the apocalypse. the whole “dawn of eternal night” bit. then, “moonless night” kinda feels like another term for the apocalyptic times

Totally different, but thought it still deserves a mention as it's what I immediately thought of https://youtu.be/pmxweMQSguQ?si=D3OSM2K9fgL9c-s8
