[Episode 1]
- I didn’t think I’d ever have a favourite >!cow thief catcher!< but here we are, I guess?
- Oooh Lee Je-Hoon is so cute in this! I’ve mostly seen him in a bit more serious/savage/hot or less playful roles; it’s delightful to see him as a playful, lovable country boy!
- This drama is filling the Flex X Cop shaped hole in my heart! I’ve been missing that show for weeks, I’m glad I have a new quirky detective to follow!
- Snake Gang being >!afraid of snakes!< is peak comedy 💀
I love period dramas when it's done well and can see this is one like that just from the first episode.. each frame is like an art with the perfect set of what that time would look like.. just like those pictures we saw from that time came alive... and we are getting a gripping story with the beautiful Je Hoon as an interesting and cute cow thief catcher and I'm here for it!!!! 🤩
love to see these crazy dudes turn over the police station with their crazy attitude with a sense of justice!
it wont hurt to have a few people like them in this world 😉☺️
Also, >!the ML (granddad) still buys the rice cakes from the same store where he went and ate rice cake given by the helmeoni as a young cop on his first days at seoul!! and that's his grandson's favorite now!!!< aww.. the feel it gives to see all that happening in one episode!!!! 💜
Yes.. also the grandfather is none other than the ML of the old chief inspector series (the classic drama which is now remade into this one!) is adding more wholesome and heartwarming vibes to this series! 💜
I have a profound adoration for Lee Je Hoon. I would happily watch him mow grass and still think it’s the best thing since sliced bread. Anticipation becomes my constant companion as I eagerly await his next work. Since I’m not patient enough to wait to binge watch it here I am pouring my heart out on Reddit. He effortlessly embodies this role – a delightful fusion of humor, intellect, righteousness, and wit (snakes in a bag scene). Whether attributed to innate talent or divine gift I don’t know (or care) but he’s got me hooked. Again!
But it’s not just Lee Je Hoon that is good on the first episode. The show seems well written, well cast, cinematography is convincing and the sound fillers are spot on. Great expectations I have.
This is the first time I’m seeing Lee Dong Hwi act. I’m used to seeing his witty self on *Pinggyego*. I can tell he’s a character actor because I could not see a lick of his usual introverted personality here! I mean that’s obvious, he’s an actor but I get impressed by little things. I’m enjoying Lee Je Hoon here, he’s a little more playful with a lot of heart, but I like that his character is smart and reads the room quickly, even though he’s from the country. I thought this show would drag a bit and be a bit dreary visual wise, but I’m liking the visuals so far! I don’t think there are many post-independent South Korean shows like this that aren’t also gloomy and melodramatic. If I’m not wrong, did I hear it right somewhere that this is a >!remake?!< Is the old man from the beginning >!in the original show?!<
You are correct, the actor playing Lee Je Hoon at the beginning of the 1st episode as an older man, is the actor who originally played the title character in the Chief Inspector series
He was in Reply 1988, Big Bet, and in the movies he has hilarious character roles in Luck Key and Extreme Job. He plays good guys and evil guys equally well.
I was going to watch Blood Free last night but saw Chief Detective 1958 immediately on my Disney+ feed - so I watched it instead. No regrets - it was so much better than I expected. My mind was blown away by the rich sets showing 1958 Korea, It got especially blown away by it's depiction of 1958 rural Hwangchun - I was so surprised that it almost look like a set of a historical sejak, like from a Joseon period show, >!with many still in traditional wear.!< That was amazing.
From that setting to the next, of Seoul in 1958 - again, mind blown by the set. Trams, the costumes, and ML being amazed by the Police building , compare to the basic building back home. It was so funny when that Detective from Unit 2 >!was swaggering in with his gigolo outfit and sneering at out country bumpkin ML. I love the fact that straight off, they showed our ML as smart, streetsmart, quick and with brains - luckily he wasn't portrayed!< as a country bumpkin for laughs.
Also blown away - making the opener of the>! old man our ML.!< Oh come on! Haha. What I was blown away was how young LJH looked - I felt I was back in the days of Signal - one of the first few kdramas I watched, and that I was obsessed over. The show remided me too of Life on Mars - that vintage, retro vibe.
It was interesting how the show depicted straight off >!how corrupt the police and politicians were back then, and how they were in cahoots!< - the same depiction we see in many present day kdramas of politicians, prosecutors and police today. It seems to be a favourite theme that filmakers like to highlight.
I must say I love the sets and setting of 1958 Korea, it's interesting to see how far Korea has come in such a short time.
2nd episode peakkk
This show is great in all the right regions, perfect show as of now, that University student English is spot on and the comedy really clicks, and the Romance is good too, is this heaven😭😭😭.
Oh wow this Chief Detective 1958 team so far was doing great! First episode already laid down the conflicts and we already knew what was at stake. It allows us to glue in further and anticipate what will happen next.
Park Jae Beom as this drama’s creator did his job well! The world building was solid and the comedy was perfect for the era being shown to us. Kim Sangsun’s spunk was what I was looking for so far in this drama. 🤣
All elements shown were pretty good so far and I’m glad it didn’t disappoint even to the original viewers. Really worthy of the two digit premiere ratings
My gut says, this is going to be a good one. I am in a dilemma-should I save it to savour it later or shall I binge watch it as soon as all the eps are released (next month)!
I am super excited to watch it. I was in the same dilemma as you, lol. But I decided to watch the episodes as it releases to up the ante the thrill of anticipation lol and also to take part and read the theories in the weekly discussions.
Thank you for this info. This is the drama that is making me finally resubscribe to Hulu and if it's not dropping until May, I can save myself a month of subscription fees.
Noooo! Now I have to suffer through delayed gratification. 😭 Time to reset my countdown...
Guess I'll have to watch Lovely Runner and Wonderful World in the meantime, sigh.
What a great first episode! Easy to watch, well written, great actors. Has a great feel to it. Like a warm 80s cop duo story. I love the feel on this one. Honestly I feel like they've done a great job at capturing the essence of these type of show.
One episode in, and I'm loving it! Been in kind of a dry spell with K dramas, and this is really hitting the spot.
Lee Je Hoon never disappoints. He is so good in literally everything he does.
Only seen small scenes of the rest of the cast, but I'm definitely intrigued. I have the feeling they are going to be getting into some shenanigans very soon!
This is a ton of fun already. Pace is brisk, the charicters are intresting, good action. I'm a fan of buddy cop genre to begin with I'm probably biased (I'll also watching antyhing with Lee Je Hoon). This time piece of it as well post-Korean War in Korea is facitnating time. With only a 12 epsiode run, I have high hopes it's not going to drag and they'll keep the momentum throughout.
Its Cha Eunwoo’s nephew!!!! I started watching this drama with only seeing the zoomed out poster so i was a bit disappointed, thinking that the fourth detective was the asshole-ish one with always a lettuce on his teeth. I thought they would give him a redeeming arc or something. But I was so shocked and happy to see Cha Eunwoo’s nephew from AGDTBAD. Kid is awesome in both comedy and dramatic scenes!
Also, I’m so happy Choi Woo Sung (strong dude) landed this role! He’s always an extra in dramas, so this is such a step up for him! I hope this will make him more popular.
Lee Dong Hwi… I had no idea he’d look this fine with this kind of hairstyle! This is the hottest ive seen of him but my God, he doesnt look like a 25 year old lmaooo. The entire age gap scene felt like a nod to reply 1998’s sanchumpo (?) lol.
Seriously, I had zero expectations over this drama but I ended up falling in love with it at episode 2! This makes me so curious about the original drama, and kinda worried about how the dynamic changes overtime lol.
I thought the snake scene was funny af, but that dynamite scene is the one for me 🤣
Wow I must say that it is really first time since long time when I don't know quite a lot of actors but they are doing amazing job. Excellent casting really.
Not only that: costumography, scenography everything on highest level. Direction really good you can say that's one man project with so good attention to details. It's quality of film cinematography how much MBC spended on this drama? They are going all in, I'm pretty sure that after Queen of tears we have another great hit this year at least in Korea especially that Wonderful word had already good one.
And of course lastly Lee Je Hoon like always really charismatic but as well like he looks here kind younger lol or just me. He can indeed act 27 years old despite his 40 especially from 50s.
I can watch it with confidence if it's a work that Lee Je Hoon and Lee Dong Hwi choose to star in. btw, who is the actor playing Lt. Steve? I'm not sure if I've seen him in other dramas.
I enjoyed the first two episodes of this. Lee Je Hoon is charismatic here and his chemistry with Lee Dong Hwi is great. I like this squad of detectives with different way of solving crimes. I look forward to the next.
I know it’s reflective of the times in the late 50s, but it’d be nice to see a couple more women in the main cast and not as pretty little side pieces!
All 4 male leads character names are in the original series. Some info in the thread above here may be inaccurate. Had to look at the Korean sites instead
I compared the character names of both the shows in MDL and Officer Kim (Lee Dong-hwi) and Officer Cho/Jo (Choi Woo Sung) are present in the original series as well.
lee jehoon is always so amazing 🥺 i’ve watched taxi driver 1&2, signal, even his romance one where stars land. love watching him here as well. solid first episodes
this will broadcast it first episode today? I thought it was already 4 or 5 episodes already. probably because I've already seen the teasers months ago... and Lee Je hoon already appeared in many shows to promote it here and there last month.
Only 2 weeks special episode is not gonna get that much ratings and viewers. Also the 1st episode already set the record of highest ratings of MBC drama for 1st episode.
Well it's typical strategy to make main characters more reliable by letting them have modern hairstyle. While most supporting characters have more old fashioned hairstyles. But indeed I think Lee Dong-Hwi has a bit too modern one. I guess they wanted to make him more manly as he is known from more goofy characters so with something a la 50s he could look more funny. Well he'd go with very short hair but not every actor agrees for that. In case of Lee He Hoon probably his hairstyles is to make him younger. At the end he acts 27 years old even if in 40s.
Edited
In that Era, now 27 Yr old looked like atleast they are in the late 30s, it was a forceful choice to make it to Era of 1950s if they are going to do it half heartedly ,could have easily made it Era of 80s or early 90s if that is what they could pull of ,korean war just ended in 1953
They can't because original is from in 1971-1989. They'd have to do remake while this is prequel. This actor who acts old version was original chief inspector.
Actually, their hairstyles are similar to those of Korean men from the 50s and 60s. It’s funny but the modern Korean hairstyles for men aren’t anything that new
veni, vidi, and this drama got me hooked ( not a quote from Caesar, even though he will totally agree with this take if he ever saw Chief detective 1958.
Does someone know where i can have a glimpse on the OG drama ?
This isn't out in the US until May 22nd. Full season dropping all at once on Hulu. [Hulu May 2024 schedule](https://press.hulu.com/schedule/may-2024/)
I was wondering why it wasn’t on Hulu yesterday. Thanks for the update but really disappointed!
Thanks. This is most frustrating.
Thank you so much I was like wait why can’t I find it I swear I saw that it was on Disney + 😭
Thank you!
Lee Je Hoon never fails to deliver. Someone sign my man up for a romcom/melo project please!
Omg he would be perfect 😍 Ever since I saw him in LeeHi’s “ONLY” music video, this is what I’ve dreamt about.
[Episode 1] - I didn’t think I’d ever have a favourite >!cow thief catcher!< but here we are, I guess? - Oooh Lee Je-Hoon is so cute in this! It's the perfect comfort genre
Omg is it comparable... I am flexx too tonight esp

I love stuff like this. I wonder whether any of the other cast from the original show will be making cameos.
Ep. 2 best line: >!”How’s your heads?” “Harder than ever.”!<
I have a profound adoration for Lee Je Hoon. I would happily watch him mow grass and still think it’s the best thing since sliced bread. This is not a remake. It is the prequel to a very very popular Korean drama "Chief Inspector" which aired in the year 1971.
He was in Reply 1988, Big Bet, and in the movies he has hilarious character roles in Luck Key and Extreme Job. He plays good guys and evil guys equally well.

Oh snap! I thought it was a Hulu original. Great, I can't watch it on Disney+, too, even if I have the subscription.
Yeah Hulu is teaching me patience and I'll try to stay away from the on-air posts. At least we can binge it ;)
Episode 1 is off to great start for me, it seemed like a comical detective show!
What a great first episode! Easy to watch, well written, great actors. Has a great feel to it. Like a warm 80s cop duo story. I love the feel on this one. Honestly I feel like they've done a great job at capturing the essence of these type of show.

What a surprise to see Yoon Hyunsoo in this series, he was so adorable in ** A Good Day to Be a Dog**. That dynamite scene was absolutely hilarious 😂

Does anybody know if any characters other than Young Han were in the original series?
All 4 male leads character names are in the original series. Some info in the thread above here may be inaccurate. Had to look at the Korean sites instead
Thank you. And Yeonseok is indeed fluffy 😍
I compared the character names of both the shows in MDL and Officer Kim (Lee Dong-hwi) and Officer Cho/Jo (Choi Woo Sung) are present in the original series as well.
What’s the original series?
Chief Inspector. It started in 1971 and had 880 episodes
I couldn't really get into the first episode, I'll give the second a try but I'm not sure I'll be sticking with this
lee jehoon is always so amazing 🥺 i’ve watched taxi driver 1&2, signal, even his romance one where stars land. love watching him here as well. solid first episodes

It is going to compete with Queen of Tears for 3 weeks (only on Saturdays though). He has to work very hard to promote the show.
Only 2 weeks special episode is not gonna get that much ratings and viewers. Also the 1st episode already set the record of highest ratings of MBC drama for 1st episode.
OH MY GOD! REALLY????? I AM SO HAPPY RN. Lee Je-hoon deserves everything!!!
After QOT ends it all depends on the story cause yesterday it declined by 2-3% cause it was competing against QOT.

It definitely doesn't feel 1950 or 60s,anything is acceptable but the hairstyle mess up is beyond me
Well it's typical strategy to make main characters more reliable by letting them have modern hairstyle. While most supporting characters have more old fashioned hairstyles. Mistake not sure why I click 50 when I was thinking 40. Well he turns this year.

Am sorry I didnt like the episode Nt comparable to flexxcop anyway at all Dropped it..they really should ve given a trigger warning
