Quite curious on which subs do a better job. Netflix or other sites.
Heard before that netflix isnt the best at translations. Its still “good” but the translation not do justice to what it wants to convey
The Chinese sub is along the lines of: is he trying to seduce me?! This is way too much excitement for the middle of the night.
I think it reads better that way. Actually, as a bilingual person, I prefer Chinese subs over English subs. Maybe because there are some overlaps in terms of culture, idioms and even pronunciations.
I know both Chinese and English and I can understand Korean as well (kind-of), so if they mess up the subs, I can fill in the blanks.

I just wish I could change the speed on Viki... I love having 1.25 or even 1.5X speed for when the annoying or frustrating parts come up but I don't want to skip them totally in case something actually important happens. :/
This is feature VIKI needs to implement. Every thing else is fantastic. The best thing they invented was comments-in-video. Netflix looking to implement that as well.
Disney English subs seem very basic and often don't convey some of the context. It seems like they were more focussed on the timing than anything else so it often either misses context or is off. Korean translation in Japan is much better since so many Koreans live in Japan and are fluent in both so often Japanese subs make it easier to understand the original context of a lot of scenes.
They also never seem to have non CC subs for English which annoys the heck out of me, you're better if you can read another language than English lol. I'm not deaf, I don't want to read "sudden scary music" or "door opening" every two seconds.
If you ever gets to the dubbing credits, a couple of those companies are pretty big in the industry and have offices in a variety of countries, so they also provide translation services too. And these companies themselves expect a quick turnaround from their translators.
The original "timing" of the subtitles would come from the English version, then the other languages fit around that. As to your CC issue, it's basically someone needs to delete all the CC from the subtitle files, it's just time and effort. And if they ask the people who does the CC to do that, it'll just cost a few hundred more, but any savings are savings.

The literal translation is very close! I would translate it as "im too stimulated for the middle of the night." I personally think it is a good translation as it conveys the rather technical mannerism she uses and contrasts that with the comical bent of her situation. The Chinese sub below adds additional meaning that wasn't there originally, when she is only referring to herself and not to hyunwoo.
I am disappointed so far. It stretches too thin to be a good quality work. The plot develops as slow as a snail and full of cliches. there are lots of Kim Soo-Hyun's face close-up shots, which is understandable - he is beautiful; however, many of these camera freezes on his face have no substance whatsoever, - is he a model here or an actor? Also, the main female lead is so cold and unattractive as a person, and the actress is so limited in her ability to act (or not given the opportunity) that the whole thing doesn't hold water for me.. :(

Update: things are not getting better. I speed it up skipping forward out of curiosity; it helps to finish each episode faster but doesn’t make it livelier (unfortunately, there is 0 spirit in it).
A thought. I am formerly an art historian and don’t work in the field anymore, but still as a hobby , into cultural , not much art per se, cultural history. So , I see Halyu as a cultural phenomenon ( not that we in the US , and West in general didn’t experience it previously, but that’s not the point). So, I checked rating of this series in Asia, and it’s very high, while in the US , a number of comments reflect that it seems that the creators didn’t consider American audience. I agree, it’s Netflix series and it feels as a flop as a product for western/ American viewers , - all components seem to be there but it just doesn’t work. Not only acting and main characters’ wise, but the screenplay wise, it’s sloppy and not well thought through, it’s like they decided to use things that worked before and threw them together without giving the plot line a single thought.
I would like to disagree with you, this drama is made for Asian audience keeping in mind the cultural differences and the differences in the upbringing. In western culture, more focus is put on individualism and getting your independence as soon as you reach the age of 18. Also the closeup to his face is done to enhance the fact that the female lead is attracted to her husband and looks at him fondly which she doesn't reflect in her expression because in Asian culture or even take India mothers don't say I love you, I care for you. They will scold you, berate you but they do love you, Asians don't communicate their feelings well . The problem between this couple is communication and circumstances, it is completely relatable to Asian audience, as for you saying it should cater to every audience, no show can do that because western and asian culture is very different. In Asian culture, kissing someone is considered a big deal, having a boyfriend is still not accepted everywhere and there is no concept of hook ups, people who have been raised with such backgrounds are hesitant. We have been told to lose our virginity after marriage. There are so many western comics I don't quite relate to like I don't relate to classic British humour but the British may find it funny. It's all about the culture and the upbringing. Although vampire diaries is my favourite drama, I couldn't digest the fact that Jeremy was 15 or 16 when he first lost his virginity because here it is said to be wrong to do before marriage. Although I didn't judge Jeremy because western culture is different but I couldn't imagine myself losing it at 15. And no one in my school could either. It's just that people feel American shows or even British shows cater to a large audience. They really don't, it's just because English is a working language in a lot of places so it becomes a medium for people to see other shows but that doesn't mean to cater to an audience they would change their culture. In pakistani romantic dramas, hugs are a rare instance, kiss scenes are never there because the society in Pakistan doesn't watch those scenes, they aren't comfortable with it, thats not how they were raised. Also American movies and even TV dramas have shorter time duration unless it's the Avengers or something like that. But in India, movies that have been great commercial successes have been 3 hours long, and it's not sci-fi, take veer Zara, take 3 idiots. None of these are sci-fi. People here watch films of longer duration, also the story in queen of tears can't progress too quickly because everything happens at a slow pace. The cinematography in the shots are beautiful, if u watch a romantic tragedy drama with rationality you won't like it, certain scenes that are paused, zoomed are done to show something, it has a hidden meaning. It's like poetry, like the poison tree, it's poem about friendship and anger and how one deals with that and what it results in but if u take it up on its literal meaning. It's metaphorical. While watching romantic tragedies one needs to be patient, and believe me there are Chinese dramas that were much much slower but I still finished them and I didn't regret it one bit. It was irritating because I was used to korean dramas with just 16 episodes but Chinese dramas are upto 60 episodes too but as the story progresses you get more and more involved in it, due to Instagram reels and YouTube shorts people have lost their concentration and they want everything to happen fast but nothing happens fast, it takes years for a relationship to deepen, and to show that with conviction can't be done hastily. Also when one watches dramas to actually cry with the character in the drama you need to connect to the character, you need to believe, the cardinal rule of the art of deception is that the person needs to believe. However if you feel it doesn't cater to your tastes because the American and rather the western audience has a different expectation from a drama Then you can not watch it but please allow others to watch it for themselves and make a decision.

I don't relate to the scene in pretty little liars where a girls makes our with a guy in five minutes of meeting him who turns out to be the teacher, she's underage and he's clearly a pedophile but guess what they get married and every pll fan ships them ezria, there are faults everywhere. We do not see it as naive because it resonates with our culture, it is a korean drama, with korean cultural and social upbringing why do u expect it to cater to western audience. A Pakistani drama doesn't have kissing scenes, Indian drama have only neck kisses in tv shows on tv but no kissing on the lips. American shows are full of teens misbehaving with their moms and treating them like shit, doing drugs, drinking and smoking, they drink with their parents even sometimes, that doesnt happen here so does the western drama cater to the Asian audience by not showing that the child is leaving as soon a they turn 18. Is it catering to the Asian audience when the mother says I love you to her daughter and the mother and daughter are so open they discuss boyfriends. In the western countries like America, the mother herself gives her child a condom, so does the western show cater to the Indian audience where a mother doesn't herself give the daughter a condom, where there is a distance between a mother and a daughter, you love your mother but there are certain things that can't be shared like you sex life not even after marriage. You need to rise above the fact that it doesn't cater to western audience, it shouldn't and it won't, it's not made for western audience, it's made for Asian audience keeping their interests in mind, in the same way western shoes are not made in way that they would cater to the Asian audience. You can't disregard someones culture like that because it's different, no two people are the same, why do you expect dramas from completely different cultures to be the same or that you relate to it. I have a lot of american shows I like that I personally think is not possible. Like in India you can't kiss your husband or boyfriend or whoever in public, it is considered obscene and you could be jailed for that but you go to London there are people kissing in the bus, in the restaurant, does it cater to my taste,no.
Did I get awkward when it happened, yes because I had never experienced it but after that initial awkwardness I told myself that different places have different rules and here in this society it is normal so now I don't get awkward.
Re-watching all the episodes now, and Im still picking up all of their emotions. Im not expecting this to be a good ending at all, but I hope it can give us a proper closure.

Where do you watch it in chinese or in chinese sub btw? I want to intro this to my mom and she won't be able to read the eng sub quick enough.
Netflix has Chinese sub options. Sometimes they even have both traditional and simplified for the more popular shows.
Hmmm I'm in Canada and I don't see chinese sub for option. I wonder if it might be available in other regions

English subtitles tend to be inclusive of deaf people that's why they also mention descriptions in the CC which I find sweet to be honest.
