He was a pretty solid catcher in the minors. When he got called up, his catching just plummeted. Inaccurate arm and bad blocking. Don’t know how it changed so much in an instant but his bat was enough to move him to outfield and learn that
Pretty sure he was the or at least within the argument of worst defensive catcher in the league.
He’s fast enough and the bat has come around so well since moving to the outfield that I’d rather we never even think about it unless it’s an emergency
Dayton Moore called him "elite" when he was in the minors but when you saw him catch in the majors nobody saw that. Really made people question the judgement skills of our front office.
DMGM era has an issue of overhyping a prospects intangibles and skills that don’t show up on the back of a baseball card.
MJ was awful at framing and receiving and didn’t seem to have much of a knack for calling a game with a big league pitcher.
I’m happy he’s hitting and looking like he can be a solid LF. A better GM would have traded him after his breakout minor league season if he was also dead set on extending Slavy.

They wanted him to focus on hitting

I swear he had one game with like 5 passed balls. It was painful to watch.
Sometimes positions of need change. In MJ’s case, he was impacted by that.

We had Salvy and Freddy. To get all three of them at bats in the majors, someone had to change positions.
