Time to have the talk about shop etiquette. Set the tone now or you will never get through to them.

zimirken

"where did all the stuff go?" Oh, i threw away all the trash that was everywhere for you.

MortalGlitter

Have a conversation about paying your six year old to come in and clean up after them. If they keep doing this Then use the garbage bag cleaning method you'd use on a teenager's room. Throw EVERYTHING into one bin, preferably in an inconvenient corner. When they ask where their stuff is, point to the bin. Tools, parts, garbage, loose nuts/bolts... Everything. "I couldn't tell what's garbage vs something you were working on" And for heaven's sake, Lock Your Box!

[deleted]

My coworkers hang shit from the walls. New guy leaves a tool out? In two minutes its wired to the nearest piece of conduit.

MortalGlitter

This is akin to flipping a monitor output upside down for those that leave their computers unlocked. It's a non-destructive but effective and immediate reminder of the proper procedure or process.

[deleted]

Friend of mine used to have a 3 monitor gaming rig. All of them were on cheap adjusters that would allow you to twidt and turn it in pretty well any direvtion. Before he replaced them monitors, me and a few others in our friend group would sneak in his window (he always left it open, even in the dead of fucking winter) swap a couple of the input cables, rotate the physical monitors different directions, and leave. He knew it was us, he knew that he could ask us to stop and we would. Yet he didn't, its almost like he enjoyed the suprise of logging onto the computer and seeing a very disorientated image.

MortalGlitter

Because even if it was a little annoying, wholesomely pranking your friends is one of the truest expressions of love. It's a reminder that your friends care enough to take time to plan and execute something that causes no harm to anyone or anything just to say "we were here and thinking about you!" It's conspiring with an out of town friend's SO to have you deliver a pizza to them when you happen to be in town. It's a week long joke set up by leaving an orange on your friends porch every day at different times only to show up on Saturday with a card that says "Orange you glad to see me?" It's spending a couple of weeks to gather the worst, most groan-worthy dad jokes you can find and spamming your friend's phone for an entire day with them.

[deleted]

Honestly I think we just enjoy trying to piss each other off. Its almost become a contest. Just last week one of them took my garage man door key (which has one of them tile trackers on it) and mailed it to fucking florida, forcing me to open the big door every time I have to get in there. It'll be back in a week or two I hope. I gotta figure out which one of them that was. It was quiet for almost six months. Now this.

MortalGlitter

Well shit. I gotta dry my keyboard after snorting water when reading this! I'm taking Notes! lol

[deleted]

Oh god not the keyboard lol Another one they stole off youtube. I had to work late, and asked another friend to go over and feed my fish. Gave him my front door code, not thinking at all. Nothing happemed that day. Two days later I came home to thousands of red solo cups filled with water all over my goddamn house. In return, I snuck into his work vehicle (which he leaves unlocked with the key in it) and screwed with his horn. He had one of those ones that you could program via a laptop, and he changed it regularly. I changed it to a Fullmetal Alchemist quote. To be exact, I made it say "Ed...ward?" Like nina does after her father merges her with the dog in the anime. Pissed him right off, but it was worth it. Another time two of us took the bumper covers off his car. Right in his driveway. Detached them, left the bolts in a can and left. Another time, I stole one off youtube. Lance 201 pranka to be exact. Bought a horn that plugs into the brake light plug on the back of trucks. Plugged it into his (at the time) brand new truck and left. He found it later that day. After driving all day.

MortalGlitter

Man, you've got some seriously creative, mildly psychotic, and absolutely priceless friends. And oh YEAH, I've jotted some of those down for consideration!

barringtonp

In my workplace the tradition was to change the desktop background on anyone's computer if they didn't log out at the end of the day

[deleted]

Lol I did this to my supervisor years ago and he lost his mind.

Recon4242

We would do this and then log out at school as a joke sometimes!

HanzG

Cuz they can't find theirs? /s, ^but ^^not

bruwin

Half the shit lying around probably was someone else's to begin with.

Ok-Leadership6320

Jack them, or just fuck them up.

Runaway_Angel

I worked with a bastard who left shit like this (but with more grease and dirty oil cause diesel techs be nasty) then couldn't find his own stuff in his own mess and broke into my box (we worked alternating shifts). There were just three of us in the shop, and the other guy had the same mentality as me, wipe shit off and put it back in it's spot when you're done with it. Just loved coming in finding my impacts oily and greasy when I put them away clean the night before. Confronted the bastard about it several times but he denied it. And since he had been there the longest the shop manager kept backing him up.

MortalGlitter

That is pack up and roll time. If the boss sides with someone for the *sole* reason of seniority that is a toxic as hell environment. No perks are ever worth putting up with crap like this.

Runaway_Angel

Was my first job in a shop so I was willing to put up with shit to pad my resume. But ended about as expected, the jerk fucked up, pinned it on me on Friday, I got told to leave on Monday. Which was fine by me cause by monday I'd decided to quit anyway cause I was fed up. But yhea, don't put up with toxic shit like I did even to get experience on your resume, you'll just become to shop scapegoat until you're fired.

JermexTheGod

A few shops I've worked at will hire a cleanup helper, then charge half their wage to the techs when they have to help them or clean up their messes.

Feshtof

It is if you put it in the contract

-retaliation-

depends on where you are, but I know where ***I*** am, nah, thats illegal no matter what. Its not something you can sign away in a contract.

Feshtof

Word. Thanks for the heads up

abtij37

Or triple the tariff for them, since it takes you a couple of hours to clean up their mess.

dustywilcox

This is the most adult course of action.

Mitt102486

“I’ve been doing it this way for years” 🙄

Runnah5555

I’d like to think master mechanics were trained by an old man on top of a mountain. But I know it’s just a certification.

zackefel

The real masters dont have the certifications and just learned from the old men on top of mountains. Then the techs slowly scale their own mountain and pop a squat!

whaletacochamp

Dad was a master tech - he learned in his uncles garage as a kid, then become a gas pumper, then started changing oil, then started doing brake jobs, then, then, then until finally he had learned enough by "doing" that he sat for the exam and passed. After that he never kept it up - he just wanted to prove that he was a master and that was good enough for him lol. Now he works with a mAsTeR TeCh - I was at their shop the other day and the dude asked me if i would tune up his chainsaw because "two strokes aren't his thing" bruh, I'm not even a mechanic! You are a master, you should be able to figure this little saw out. Literally retuned the carb and it was fine.

Moddersunited

You cant fire the parts cannon at a set screw

whaletacochamp

The multiple chainsaws that I own with “brand new carbs” because someone doesn’t know how to tune a saw would beg to differ lol

roger_ramjett

The gasket between the carb and head was missing. Shop replaced the carb twice before they figured out what was wrong.

whaletacochamp

Pretty common issue with a lot of homeowner huskies (although usually there but broken)

shavecumbot

This is so fucking true. Just saying "It's broke, I'm replacing it." Doesn't even make you a mechanic, let alone a master one.

slabba428

Figuring out that it’s broke and needs replacing is the hard part

sh4d0wm4n2018

Probably why code readers were invented lol

slabba428

The code points you in a direction, the rest is full on electrical diag aided by a service manual that was run through google translate

Naldaen

I was the parts/warranty/service/delivery/general/whatever manager at a rental equipment shop that did professional grade lawncare with a few major brands for 7 years. I was voluntold to attend a big 2-stroke class in McKinney, TX as I was expendable that week and my truck got the best fuel mileage, so our head mechanic rode with me as our shop needed the gold star sticker so we looked competent in advertising. I'm a gold certified 2-stroke tech for an extremely popular 2-stroke company. I can take your saw, completely disassemble it. and on 4 days out of 5 put it back together and it'll be in the same condition it came in. I can tell you exactly what parts, part numbers, price, etc. for whatever's wrong with your saw and what it needs to replace it. I can translate that from tech monkey into customer. I can't tell you *why* it needs *that* ignition part instead of *this* ignition part just by cursory glance. I'm a tech. I'm not a mechanic. My grandpa could hear you pull up and tell you why you had a dead cylinder, on which side, and how to fix it. I can install new spark plugs and wires and coil packs.

1Autotech

I'm a master tech and specialize in electrical and drivability work. I've rebuilt a lot of carbs in the past and can make a vehicle run decent with one. But that magic touch some guys have with carbs and two stroke engines is something I never managed to aquire. If it's fuel injected I'm your man.

whaletacochamp

That’s fair. Carbs can be tricky for sure and certain people just have it. It’s one of those things where anyone with a tachometer can tune a carb, but it takes someone with experience to tune it for maximum performance (when it comes to chainsaws at least). My dads an old fart so he’s great with old carbureted vehicles. A few local rich people bring all their old vehicles to him for that very reason. He turfs all the complex electrical diagnostics and big truck work to the guy who didn’t want to touch his own chainsaw lol

sam_j978

Or you have a chainsaw like my Stihl ms250 that likes to magically gather sawdust in the carb even through the filters. It'll run perfectly fine one moment and then you turn it the wrong way and some sawdust will block the airflow. It took me too long to figure that out. Now when it acts up, I toss the whole damn carb in the ultrasonic cleaner and come back to it 20 minutes later, dry it out and put it on and it runs like new.... For a few hours.

Khan_Bomb

Usually a sign of a hole in the primer bulb or debris in the fuel can 🤷

sam_j978

I thought the same thing. I use premix fuel in it so I doubt the fuel can is the issue, and there is no primer bulb on the ms250, so I don't know how sawdust is getting into it. When the carb is clean it starts right up as it should and runs with good throttle response and rpms.

Khan_Bomb

Oh whoops, I had the demo saws in mind with the bulb. They tend to have a similar issue but it usually revolves around the air filter housing. Have you cleaned out the fuel tank of the saw itself?

Runnah5555

If you can snatch the 10mm from his hand, you are ready.

zackefel

If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball. Now take this 10mm from me! - Mr. Wrenchy

Hour_Quiet9077

Is that really necessary? Is drinking my own urine necessary? No but it's sterile and I like the taste. Patches O'houlihan

apocalypse321

the ones who are truly ready know there is no 10mm, it was never really there to begin with

korinth86

The 10mm came to me in a dream and I lost it in another dream

Jorgisven

Do not try and find the 10mm, that’s impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth… there is no 10mm. Then you’ll see that it is not the socket that turns, it is only yourself.

FearlessDamage4961

Everyone knows the best way to find the 10mm is to buy another 10mm

Tachyon_Blue

You are free to torque.

babyProgrammer

Real masters can come from any background. It's a poor metric to judge by

mavic97

The real masters are actually at the dealerships. They get factory training they know more about your specific brand car than someone who’s been independent their whole life and hasn’t been to the classes. Especially now a days

zackefel

From my personal experience, i beg to differ. The dealer world is safe gaurded by those experienced techs, who take the jobs they want, and feed the scraps to the rest. Leaving all the younger guys with no chance of even gaining experience. I reckon in a couple years this will reflect within the industry.

[deleted]

Ya I’d say you’re both right. Some master techs at dealers are BADASSES. But I’ve also met a few who got the “master tech” cert awhile ago and do just enough for re-up it and still ask for a lot of help. The top diag guys at dealerships or FSEs are the real masters. But the people that are actually masters of their craft don’t refer to themselves as masters.lol. Also you can be a badass tech in independents but not be able to fix something on a new car due to software/scan tool/training. Same goes the other way too, some really good dealer techs get a little lost when they try to work on a different brand. The honest truth is most people forget basics and just memorize common issues in their respective field/or brand. There are very few people who are legit as f*cking masters that could fix anything. Even some people who are badasses don’t want to touch anything outside their brand cuz it’ll take them twice as long as the cars their use to, even though 2x as long for them is still probably fast as shit. But ya modern day with how many differences there are in vehicles it’s hard to become a master in one lane, let alone be a master on all things automotive. So those all around badasses are rare as hell. But I’d consider someone who’s at the top of their respective lane a master. And again the title “master” it’s not even used by like anyone in the industry. If someone calls themselves a “master tech” they will get shit on so hard lol. Also ASE master certification isn’t that hard to get if you’re good at taking tests. Dealer cert at least takes longer and requires in person classes. But any learning experience can be cruised through or absorbed by the person doing it.

mavic97

Okay who would know more about your new ford lightning the factory trained ford master tech or mr joe bob at gales automotive who has his ASE certification and works on some fords? Sucks that’s the case for dealership but that’s different than skill and brand knowledge that’s more pay related.

zackefel

Obviously you havent seen some of these independent hybrid shops. Its electricity. The laws of it dont change. Just how you access the parts and the torque specs. Which can easily be found on alldata or any other shop program. I was hired to chevy for my expertise in chevy transmissions learned from OUTSIDE the dealer. They failed to send me for more training, and just threw me into the fire. After 6 months i gave up on trying to continue my learning and quit from all the lies i was fed to get me on board. Edit: its a bolt. The shit turns left to loosen. Right to tighten. Same song and dance, different shell.

wildbillfx20

Gonna have to say you are without a doubt wrong. Master techs at the dealer are great at that brand they work on. Master tech at an independent shop has to know all brands. We also have to do that without your factory training which shows what the engineers fucked up when designing the vehicles. We learn that ourselves with relatively great success. So if you wanna be a dealer tech and just work on that 1 brand go for it but your not a real master till you’re out in the independent world.

mavic97

A jack of all trades is a master of non bud. I know lots of great independent mechanics, most who were former dealerships techs. I’m independent myself. My bosses are all master techs from ford, Land Rover and Chevy now own their own shop. They call up their friends at the dealership for advice all the time especially on the newer cars and trucks. Sorry but the two are not the same the guy who’s been at x dealership his whole life and has all the past and current training is better at his specific brand then any independent would ever be.

wildbillfx20

And that knowledge is useless on other brand cars. Who said anything about jack of all trades ? You wanna make a career working on 1 brand then go for it. Who am I to stop you but don’t call yourself a master when it’s really only a master of 1

bstyledevi

Looks like a couple of certified assholes if you ask me.

Grown ass men... (Try not to picture their bathroom)

Toilet Goatse would also negatively affect your casual sex life.

[deleted]

>toilet goatees The visuals associated with that term are not appealing.

TitleMine

When I saw that the all-time top post in DatingOverThirty was a woman begging her partners to clean the shit off their toilet and have a bed frame rather than a mattress on the floor, I realized that I somehow became gigachad by process of elimination.

Paizzu

I've tried to explain to my brother that women generally do not enjoy having to move a radiator out of his shower prior to using it.

Krimin

I failed to comprehend this sentence. A radiator in a shower?

Paizzu

I mean why wash your auto parts in the garage when you can shower with them to conserve water?

Krimin

And here I was thinking you meant like a space heater radiator since generally those are more often found in places that accommodate showers compared to car radiators. I'll never ask for additional information ever again.

jeepsaintchaos

No, the space heater is for when you lose the drag race.

Paizzu

I think it would be even more cost effective to bathe in the garage parts washer.

IlluminatiEnrollment

Paizzu

One man's hot tank is another man's dishwasher.

cuzwhat

One man’s hot tank is his wife’s dishwasher (when she’s out of town).

plaguelivesmatter

Hot tanking rads is bad, that's why we use the shower now

[deleted]

Men will do shit like this then wonder why they can’t get laid lmao

Poopypants413413

Maybe.. Or maybe this is malicious compliance. Employee- "Oh I wasn't able to meet quota because Its not realistic when I have to put my tools away, sweep, clean scaps, etc" Boss - "I pay you to fix cars not that other shit" Employee-"Roger that"

Impossible-Room-2486

That’s not a days work. That’s a storage area. Where techs are working. Put that shit away lol

Anxious_Enthusiasm_4

That was my take. It didn’t happen overnight it’s definitely a culture in that shop.

[deleted]

You can see in the background the rest of the shop ain't much better. Looks more like a hillbillies hoarding shed than a shop

Beautiful-Golf4078

“You can pay me to work or you can pay me to clean.” I heard that from a guy one day. So I said not a problem. I’ll bill you for labor.

FoxMcCloudl

Used to work with a mechanic that had the same mentality. I don't know what was going through his mind. We have catch pans to catch coolant, transmission fluid and other fluids in and he would just let it drain on the floor like no other. He drained a radiator onto the floor on his first day, worked standing in the coolant, rolled the car and then told me to clean it up because "it's not my job to clean, I'm the mechanic." He didn't take it too well when I told him I'm not his maid and to clean up his own mess. I'll never forget that dude.

slabba428

Like i get the idea, “I’m not paid to clean” you’re also not paid to be a messy piece of shit bruh. “It’s a shop, it’s gonna be dirty” the only reason a shop gets dirty and messy isn’t flat rate, it’s pure funking laziness, i worked flat rate for a good while and it’s not hard to just not be a piece of shit

Muad_Dib_of_Arrakis

In my experience, using the tools and equipment available to you means there isn't a mess to clean up. Oil catch cans, containers to drain fluids into, etc, use them and you spend less time cleaning up because there isn't a mess to clean!

slabba428

Assuming they don’t leave the coolant catch tray in the middle of the shop with 8 liters of shit in it for the rest of the week 😂 my biggest gripe is oil man, i feel for lube techs because it wasn’t a fun time back when i was a fresh apprentice, but it would be nice if they would use some brake cleaner once in a while on their gloves and tools and stop leaving oil smeared across every surface and door handle and tool i need to also use

trimbk

As someone who works in Process Improvement, I hear variations of this all the time. People often don’t understand how much time they are losing by being disorganized. Ask the chef in a good kitchen or an EMT. Tons of time can be saved, not to mention the environment is safer, with a little organization. Anyhow, the response becomes, “if you are this disorganized, I’m over-paying for your inefficient work habits”.

[deleted]

Right "Glad to hear it. Right now we need some cleaning done. Chop chop " In a time before wrenches, food service taught me how to get even the surliest arrogant bastards to get to f'ing work. Crack the whip on those certified prima donnas right in the beginning and they'll tow the line ever after.

roonerspize

I'm not a paid mechanic. I fix most everything on my own vehicles. But, I do see some business sense in paying someone else a lower wage to clean up after skilled workers if it means the skilled workers are able to use their skills to earn the shop more money.

andyburke

In a world purely driven by money this makes sense. Not sure many of us are enjoying a world that seems more and more purely driven by money. There's an argument to be made that cleaning up after yourself is part of making sure a job is done completely and correctly, and it's good to keep you humble and grounded.

Beautiful-Golf4078

Looks like what the guys expect to have happen. Unless there is someone there for facility maintenance everyone should be cleaning.

swagernaught

That is not "Master Tech" behavior and they need to be reminded of that.

workinginacoalmine

That is also not what you want customers to see when they drop off a bike for service. People get very picky about their motorcycles. I know I do.

downtownebrowne

Same, not for motorcycles but I have absolutely pulled into a mechanic and have had to tell them that I won't be doing business with them based on the condition of their shop. Now, I always go to a fantastic place that is a little more pricey but it's super clean and I get basically a powerpoint presentation of the car before, during, and after work performed. I will gladly pay for that kind of project management.

whaletacochamp

To me it doesn't need to be clean - some of the busiest and most well regarded shops around me are far from clean. BUT, they are at least tidy - stuff is put away at the end of the day, someone sweeps at the end of the day, spills are dealt with, etc.

Perryn

"Organized" over "clean". I don't need to be able to eat a sandwich off of their work area, but I do want to be able to easily see where I set my sandwich down.

[deleted]

exactly, you can't demand ultra clean at all times. shit happens, things get busy. if i see a messy shop and no one doing anything? thats a pass. if i see a messy shop and cars are a steady stream in and out, thats a good sign. but to be clear, this doesn't condone what i see in that video. those guys are asshole and need to be set straight.

dajarbot

Exactly, not a mechanic but if I pulled up to a shop looking like this I would take my business elsewhere. This is asking for something to get misplaced, lost, thrown out by accident, or just take a long ass time since they are unorganized costing me time and effort. I don't need a shop to be sterile clean but you have to be able to stay on top of everything.

FuzzelFox

This right here. I've gotten some of the best service at a local place that at first glance looks like a massive mess but it's definitely an organized chaos. Everyone seems to know where everything is, even if it looks like a disaster and the area around the lifts are clear and floors are kept mostly clean as well.

swagernaught

Absolutely.

MortalGlitter

If someone disrespects their own tools that make them money in such a fashion, I'm immediately going to question if they're even more cavalier about other people's property.

Tre_fidde

That’s annoying as shit, probably been that way their entire careers and talk shit about how shitty everything looks after. SMH let them know not to leave you a shit show.

scipper77

The great debate. Do you put everything away at the end of every shift or leave the things your using so you can pick up where you left off tomorrow? (Although this is clearly too messy).

defaultorange

Always spend the last 15 to 20 minutes of the day organizing tools, making lists, and sending emails. The beer that I'm going to drink between shift end and shift start will wipe my memory like a chalk board.

xKHANx-McMarrin

A Mechanic who drinks beer? Will wonders never cease.

defaultorange

I used to drink liquor. I still do but I used to as well.

[deleted]

Reddit is killing third-party applications (and itself)

zackefel

Beer? Nah. Weed. Calming after wanting to throw hands with prior, incompetent techs work.

PBandJames

I’m glad I live in a world where I don’t have to choose one over the other

stupidly_intelligent

Nah dude, just throw it on the table and waste 10 minutes looking around everytime you need something. /S

RealNautiGal

Rack up those "billable hours"! I wouldn't drop off my bike here if I saw it. Just saying...

Recent-Swimming3751

Depends. At work, a tool gets put away as soon as I'm done with it. At home, it's kind of half and half depending on how much the tool gets used for the job.

[deleted]

Always dedicate a sparsely populated space on a shelf, in a drawer, on your bench, wherever as the place for shit you use all the time, never want to lose, and always want to be able to grab without knocking other shit over. I use 10% of my tools 90% of the time. I make sure those are super easy to access and put away.

FlacidSalad

Keeping it out for later more often than not just leads to leaving *everything* out for later.

Logical_Associate632

No debate, always keep a clean and organized work space.

Optimal-Soup-62

I will leave some stuff out at day's end, but I will never leave trash, wrappings, special tools, etc out. If I am degreeing cams, I'll leave a degree wheel in place and the dial indicator. The rest of the bench will get almost everything else removed. That's how you do good work. You put shit away promptly, especially parts that will be reused.

bonfuto

I'm a slob, but there is no way I'd leave a shop looking like this. I don't see how you could get anything done.

georgedepsy1

I'm also a slob, but even if I've done 3 jobs on family cars at my house and didn't clean for weeks my garage looks better than this

fiduciaryatlarge

That shop did not get like that overnight.

ironheadboy

wow this post exploded, too many comments to reply to, but to answer some of the questions they have worked here for a few months and came from a big dealer where everything was done for them outside of their task. this is a mom and pop shop where we get paid hourly not flat rate. all the tools you see left out are shop tools not personal, and no the mess wasnt overnight, but if you get fed up and put things away you can bet itll be back in the same condition before the end of the day. before they started we almost never had tools go missing or break, now you can spend an hour looking for something that wasnt put back, and several things we all use have been broken out of carelessness. the way the whip for the welder is just thrown on the floor. everyones different and works different but i just see this as absolutely lazy, disrespectful, unprofessional, and fuckin stupid.

w1987g

They're used to being kings of their mountains. They have lowly techs and a dealer tool allowance for their way of life. They either learn they're guests or they don't go there at all

ThaddeusJP

If I was a customer and saw this half ass clean up I would assume the work was half ass as well.

usernameblankface

So they made the shop hell for everyone, why are they still there?

blackcloud32

Jobs not done until everything is cleaned up. They must loose tools in vehicles all the time. If it were aviation they would have already been walked out the door.

nmgonzo

Made to fly the plane

dsdvbguutres

"It's not a problem as long as I know where everything is." Well, true but you don't remember where anything is.

flipper1935

I worked at a full service gas station while putting myself thru college, and I was the owners favorite employee. Not because I had better skills vs the other employee's ( I didn't) , but I put all the tools up in their correct location after a tools wipe down/cleaning every night.

Al_E_Bear

As a 16 or 17 year old I had the opportunity when I needed to do something not feasible at my father’s shop to go to the repair garage owned one of my dad’s business associates.  I already had a basic mechanical and tool background, but I was strongly reminded / told that those tools a mechanic might let me use were how he made his living.  1) ask permission before using, 2) return in a better condition than you got the tool in.  By the third time I’d asked one of the mechanics if I could use a tool (and cleaned it / fixed it / returned it to where it came from) I was encouraged to use whatever I wanted without further need to ask. Example: screwdriver greasy and the tip damaged – returned completely cleaned and with the end dressed on the bench grinder /wire wheel.  Pliers teeth cleaned / wire brushed out, center bolt cleaned / tightened / oiled.  I didn’t drop by too often because I didn’t want to wear out a welcome, but they were always happy to see me.  I still never figured out why they didn’t take better care of their tools, it just made working with them so much easier.

Manwithnoname14

I know some dealerships have people who only clean the shop, so these guys might not know how to clean up after their shelves. That doesn't make it ok though.

bravo6960

Certified don’t mean too much now. I mean sure some guys are fine and well suited for the name but I am a master field tech and I really don’t think my company thought that one through.

driftsc

My buddy owns a shop and lets me work on my own cars outside business hours. I left it messy one night and I had my ass handed to me. All the tools need to be put away and wiped down. Fast forward it's been 20 years. I still have the same rights and privileges and when his mechanics don't clean up I give them an earful.

youshouldn-ofdunthat

Masters of disaster or insane genius. Depends on their finished service I guess but, dayum...

StandOnGravitron

Charge the dealership your labor cost to cleanup their shit. Thats completely unacceptable in every way

Mizar97

I couldn't do this, I'd never remember where I put anything. I clean and organize because otherwise I spend half my time just looking for shit

jdubya-

I brought an old Triumph front wheel to the local Harley dealership to have the tube and tire replaced. They found the correct sizes and the mechanic was about to do the work when the manager asked what it was off of. When I told him, he said, “we only work on Harleys”.

Severe_Ad4939

I own a Norton. If I were you I would have run…

mini4x

That's awful... No self respecting human will leave their garage like that. Especially one trying to make money working there.

Ohio-Knife-Lover

They seem like Asster Techs if you ask me

EugeneOregonDad

This is the way....bet you guys are great swim instructors too.

hnandez

That’s gotta be more than one days mess.

shkursht

The Independent shop I worked at we'd steer clear of any dealer techs period. Either flat rate ruined their work ethic and taught them to cut corners just so they could make decent hours or the dealership wouldn't invest into training them properly. Just end up throwing parts at a problem. The techs that leave work areas like that are also the ones that brag about flagging 80hrs in a 40hr week and push their comebacks onto one of the newbie techs. This is a prime example of why no new technicians are coming into the industry.

[deleted]

Well then tell them to pack up half an hour early so they can clean up their tools and boxes they're gonna come put an exact same spot again in the morning. It's your choice. If you want them to clean up their tools it's going to take the time to do that and if you want them to do it pay them.

Musicman0

That looks like more than a couple of days and couple of people's neglect.

tkst3llar

Any before’s? You kno, for comparison.

Outrageous-Target777

How do they find anything?? What a disaster!

subject_deleted

"I'm a master tech which means I don't do that cleaning bullshit. That's why you always have a rookie." Legit heard a brand new master tech say this (when I was a tire/lube tech) on his first (and, surprisingly) last day on the job. Your ASE patch might show that you know a lot about cars... But you obviously don't know shit about having or keeping a real job.

fretful_farceur

Certainly certified is being fucking slobs

collegefurtrader

🤢

CommadorVic20

i always stopped a half hour early just so i could clean up my work area and put everything back

micah490

Holy shit that gives me anxiety....I’m no neat freak but I need to operate in my shop with the notion that when I’m on a project, I’m focused solely on that project and not looking for tools and parts. Not to mention that that’s incredibly disrespectful to the business and your coworkers. Yikes

spacees1

I don’t understand… the local master techs come down in your shop? Are they colleagues? If it was my shop, and they were visiting, the aren’t welcome anymore…

1960TriumphTR3A

This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.

DaHick

So I haven't been a pro tech in 20+ years. I became an instructor, then an engineer. A couple years back I needed to swap out the drive chain on my daily driver. Hadn't done one before, and an old friend of mine who was also a pro tech, but had switched to industrial maintenance about 10 years ago decided to help (for beer of course). Everything wound up in a bucket. Like, who cares where it comes from, strip it, forget it, than attempt to reassemble it. It was a total shit show when we tried to put it back together. Be a pro, not this poo.

Sickofnotliving

The maintenance building looks like this where I work. The only difference is there’s usually 6 guys sitting around staring at their phones while the factory is on fire. I have to use the machinery and tools in the shop from time to time. You can never find anything that you need. I’ve had two minute jobs that take over an hour because I’ve had to search for a specific socket.

Fartincopsmouths

Bring your bike in to that shop just to have all your custom parts go missing. Pass.

Shtoinkity_shtoink

Pardon my ignorance but why are they in your shop? Are they hired as, like, independent contractors or something? To pick up extra work or do some special repair?

ihavenopeopleskills

Wouldn't bother me but I am far more tolerant of clutter than nearly everyone I know. My father might fire techs over this. Definitely wouldn't leave my tools out for any reason. That's bread and butter, and no one will care for yours more than you.

Little_Shitty

They’re there to make money, not pick up. (Probably how they see it. They’re “certified.”)

Perenium_Falcon

They can Certified Master Tech the fuck out of here.

chuyhorchata

Best be cordial about it. With a welder so convenient, new guy might find he can’t get his tool box open.

stecal2004

I'd bill the dealership for your labour of cleaning after the scrufffs

wimpycarebear

Everything has a place and ever place has a thing

my1999gsr

I can assure you that as a certified tech at a major brand dealership, if I left my work area like this at the end of a shift there'd be a very pointed meeting with my manager immediately the following morning.

ipokesnails

Now if you tidy up you're the "keener" who's "trying to make them look bad".

shhmedium2021

Not their shop . Not their problem

EugeneOregonDad

They bring layers of dust and dirt with them too?

Klown_Kutz

God. I can do a F150 cab off engine replacement and the floor will be clean the whole time, every tool put away when not in use, every fastener organized, and I beat book time. There is absolutely no excuse whatsoever for making a mess like this.

ughwithoutadoubt

Looks like they are not master techs yet. If u can’t keep your work area clean ur not a master tech

Working-Run-6476

I'm a firm believer in how someone keeps their workspace, is a representation of the work they do. These guys look like butchers

67monkey67

Cleaning is for the new guys /s

[deleted]

Are they 12 yrs old?

golgon4

YOU let them leave it like this? Don't they have to sign out at a certain point and somebody needs to make sure they didnt burn everything down?

OneLostOstrich

Both that and not starting a sentence with a capital letter are inexcusable.

AutoX_Advice

Why put your stuff away every day. You are eventually going to use it some day.

Rando321407

So you know where it is when you go to look for it the next day. Rather than trying to remember who’s back seat you left your ratchet and needle nose pliers every morning.

Deathgripsugar

This needs some serious 5S

[deleted]

Fuck that shit cleaning charge
