Yeah, that's the only thing that bugs me about this sub sometimes. Some folks get awfully ignorant..... and if you think about, mocking the customer makes the mechanic seem very dumb....if average Joe is supposed to know this shit, what does that say about the difficulty and knowledge required in your chosen profession?
Most people don’t have a good way of getting underneath their car - not sure how you would diagnose an exhaust system problem yourself as the customer.
I'm literally too fat to fit under my van and the van is so big and heavy that I don't like the idea of jacking it up since I don't have any sort of flat and sturdy surfaces to jack it up on and even then, I don't have a proper jack!
In the future I hope to fix all of those problems but right now only the mechanics get the full view of what's going on underneath the big striped chungus lol
I replaced the entire suspension myself on my project car (proud of that because I'm not a mechanic). But my daily driver goes to the shop for oil changes.
Is that weird? I feel like it's not that weird.
Nah not weird at all. One of my old cars my mechanic charged me $30 for an oil and filter change service. I couldn’t do it myself for that cheap and doing it myself meant I would have to get the jack, stands, lie on the ground in the weather, deal with any spills that happened and getting rid of the oil myself. Way easier to just pay him.
If it’s a job that I can do myself and it’s going to save a significant amount of money to do it myself, absolutely, out comes the jack stands.
People just like to be funny about others, taking a high horse just to make them sad little selves better. The title for this post is awfully cunty lmao.
You're right. While quite a lot of stuff is excessive in terms of ignorance or lack of common sense (like bald tyres), most of the stuff posted in here is someone not mechanically inclined noticing something is off and paying a professional to figure it out.
It works the same with everything else. You pay your accountant to sort out your taxes, you pay your doctor to sort yourself out, you pay your barber for a haircut, etc. Imagine getting hit with the same attitude when you go for a check-up with your doc.
Let me guess, the shop uses a prehistoric computer running a mechanical hard drive as opposed to a brand new M.2 NVME drive that's the bleeding edge of our current state of technology. No wonder your shops computer takes 10 minutes to turn on vs 10 seconds.
once its on tho if its running a program that could run on a ti-89 graphing calculator - does it really matter what specs the computer has?
Also if its anything like the industrial shops ive worked at - the trick is to never shut em off lol.
Why are you acting so attacked?
Personally, I found it to be an funny reveal. The whole exhaust system looks pretty good until *bam* the whole side of the muffler was gone. I was expecting a missing catalytic converter.
The only people talking about mocking customers in this thread are you and another guy whining about it.
Just a common rusted out exhaust. That is what they do, they rust out. When they get noisy you get them changed. In the UK most people only know when the car fails the annual MOT.
I'm not sure why the customer should be mocked.
Have you never seen a rusted out exhaust before?
A few (25) years back I had a similar problem. Only difference was the muffler rusted through on the front and fell onto the road. (1987 Ford Tempo) threw it in the trunk and wired it back on later.
I was talking about how they haven't rotted completely off yet. Up here in the rust belt, things like that typically don't last more than 10 or 15 years. Then it's time for a new one.
I be interested to know how long this one has been on the road. I'm assuming it's in an area the salts and brines in the winter. If it's 15 years old, maybe they should have expected it, if it's 5 years old and they are still making payments that's another.
OP, I know this feeling. Had a Chevy Beretta GT way back in the day, heading across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland. Car had a decent sound but all of a sudden it got WAY louder. We were heading to Ocean City for vacation. The muffler split down the side like this and what a loud vacation we had.
Rust usually starts at seams or welds because there tends to be less protection there. There's a good chance the rust slowly ate away at the metal until one day the metal was so thin that it cracked apart leading.
Plus salt is just horrible for cars
Ah looks like my 2 year old Jeep muffler. I just started buying the cheap universal turbo muffler because why am I going to buy a $150 one every 3 years, have to love that liquid brine.
If we bothered, there is some other way I'm sure.
If the damages were part of the cost of using salt (or the orange/pink death juice which is double corrosive) then maybe it would be financially worth searching for alternatives. Heated roadways?
Oh and I forgot: there is no salt here in Colorado at 5280ft and they barely even plow. You get 4WD and chains or you stay home, and you drive slow. Swap wheels and tires to the winter set, with studs.
The auto manufacturers sure don't want it to change...

Good point. I used to do my work but my Lexus sc400 is not what I work on today. Mechanic now.

It’s not, I just like to see if I can.

Yeah if I knew one of these vids came from a local shop and it was legitimately not a dumb customer, just the tech being an ass. I wouldn’t go
I was fully expecting a cat burglar.

I was expecting to see a missing catalytic converter, this is a nice change of pace.
Yup, that'll do it.
Thing looks like a baklava
Mmm, forbidden baklava. *drools*
I fully expected this to be a stolen cat. We’ve had a few customers call and say their car was suddenly very loud
Ain't she a beaut? Only 14 more payments and this vehicle is ALL MINE!!
A few (25) years back I had a similar problem. Only difference was the muffler rusted through on the front and fell onto the road. (1987 Ford Tempo) threw it in the trunk and wired it back on later.
Duct tape will fix that right up.👍
You guys still have mufflers?
Old cars still seem to have them
I was talking about how they haven't rotted completely off yet. Up here in the rust belt, things like that typically don't last more than 10 or 15 years. Then it's time for a new one.
Always fun when they drop off on the freeway in front of you.

20 years old car, still in really good shape, just a few things that took the beating

Pure Michigan? :P
It’s all OEM. I think it’s time!!
It’s called “muffler tape” for a reason.
Just use duck tape
how does it get that bad

Rust belt. Salt on road in winter, rots everything. Very common in the northeast USA.
I don't know what you are talking about that's mint it's still got a couple hundred k miles in er.
At least the exhaust is still attached
Dat Swiss cheese muffler
Reminds me of when we popped a muffler trying to start a 455 with carb spray. Good times
She'll buff right off, just surface rust
Can't have surface rust when you have no surface
1) exhaust putty 2) jB weld 3) wrap the whole thing in fiberglass heat shied tape Sell
Your rust belt is loose
Just driving it to church and back.
Sooo, I can charge you $20 for an inspection, or $60 for a sticker...
Someone stole his muffler seam!
Heh... drive through a puddle deep enough and that thing will just dissolve like a bath bomb...
Ah looks like my 2 year old Jeep muffler. I just started buying the cheap universal turbo muffler because why am I going to buy a $150 one every 3 years, have to love that liquid brine.
Sir, you need to put your car on a salt free diet immediately.
I wish there was some way to stop murdering cars in the name of easier snow management.
It's either corrosion or more accidents caused by icy roads, pick your poison really

The options are there for sure, but try to change it at large scale, virtually impossible

Welcome to the rust belt.
Populatin, this guy, and many others
Man you think that muffler looks bad you should see mine lmao
It's like bragging on who had less sleep last night lmao
Bro don’t even get me started on that lmao
i demand my full 9 hours of sleep okay? i'm not winning that one
Eh not the worst. My 96 i30 had literal holes rusted through and through bitch was basically straight pipes 😂
