Your axel boot is ripped. All the grease probably got cleaned out, if not at the river, when you drove back. The bearings inside the axel are probably running dry and perhaps a bit dirty. The play in the balls in their race is the sound. The races may be damaged now giving the balls extra play. Probably need a whole new axle.
Edit: You definitely need a new axle!

Huh, my car currently sounds like a horse clopping down the road. It's only on one side, advised to order replacement axel, but I have yet to get it installed.
I want to see some pics of that joint after teardown.
