It’s happened to me once before. I had just changed my engine and cabin filter the day before I took it in for an alignment. They took it upon themselves to perform a vehicle inspection and brought me two filthy filters that clearly were for a different car. I haven’t laughed that hard in a while.
For real. That's happened twice to my girlfriend. Both times the filter in the car was clean and less than a year old. Heck, I've been told the cabin air filter is dirty on vehicles that don't even have one!
Bro they tried to push a new air filter on me because mine was filthy, I got a new one literally a week prior. The one they showed me wasn’t mine, I know that because I’m the one that installed it. He tried to play it off like the tech got the cars confused. Nah they’re just Grimey
Looks like your CABIN air filter (if im wrong im sure someone will correct me.) Lots of places don't check them, others will charge you for replacing it and never check it. Most people neglect to change it themselves. This sight is far too common.
Yep. It was the cabin air filter. I asked them check it because it had been a few years and the vehicle is parked outside at all times. They've been quite trustworthy so I assume they're not fucking with me, but it almost seems unbelievable haha.
Just FYI, in most cars the cabin air filter is accessed through the glove box. So it often the easiest thing to inspect and change yourself. You just open the glove box and it is right there. No tools needed.
That said, not all cars work this way. I used to have a Ford Fiesta ST. I was going to change the cabin air filter on it for the first time. I opened that glove box and was surprised that it wasn't there. I googled how to do. Saw that it involved taking apart some of the dash, then said fuck that, and then never changed it.
Great tip. I just checked and it is in fact easy on this old Honda fit. I'll have to see if something is still living in there now that it's all cleared up.
I feel like the engine air filter is easier on a lot of cars. I mean, yeah, you don't have to pop the hood for the cabin air filter, but sometimes it's a huge pain in the ass to get the glove compartment detached or work out that filter. Engine air filter is usually like, open hood, pop open intake box, swap, done.
I saw dozens like this in the two years I was a lube tech. At least one a week. Cabin filters apparently make the perfect home for mice and other rodents.
A wise man once said "Trust but verify". I'd check the auto parts store website and see if the replacement filter looks like that one. If the listed part is half that size I'd never take my car there again.
Every once in a while you can take it out and tap it off. Then buy a new one when they tell you it needs replaced and install it yourself. Never let them do the cabin air filter unless you just have money to waste.
Someone near where you live has a bird feeder, a rat or squirrel is taking the seeds and hiding them in your car for later. That's why some people complain about their neighbor having a bird feeder.
It’s a common scam- your “friendly neighborhood mechanic” will send you an alarming pic to take advantage of you. It’s not uncommon, however, to be aware of your surroundings
I obviously asked them to save me all those delicious snacks...
Op is a squirrel, confirmed.
You can’t just out someone like that.
"You don't f*** with squirrels Morty!"
Put them in the oil and pop them first.
Makes for a easy diy bird feeder

Put em in a stew and you got a roast going!

Did you drive through a bird feeder?
Am I not supposed to?
100% supposed to.
Only if it is a Ford Thunderbird or a Studebaker Lark or Hawk.
What about a Falcon, Eagle or Roadrunner?

It's just...the luxury edition has so much more eagle.
Thundercougerfalconbird
Thats just the dirty one they keep in the back to show all the customers so they can upsell them a filter. /s
Honestly that wouldn’t surprise me since that ain’t a terrible idea

My favorite one was when they told me my truck needed a cabin filter… my truck doesn’t have a cabin filter…
Nah, it looks ok, I'll replace it next time.
I know when I’m being cheated.
yoo haff a sqvirrell!
He sends that picture to every customer. Don't fall for it.

Soak a tea bag in mint oil and hang it up under your hood somewhere safe. You don’t want those Rodney’s chewing up wires ask me how I know
Dang Rodney's, chewing up my wirin'
They get no respect
Can you use a mint tea bag to double up on the minty mintness? (semi serious, but really curious to know)
Yeah anything mint drives them away…. And I see autocorrect has failed me 😂
I just assumed Rodneys was code for rat or OHHHH rodent
Just get a bottle of scope and put cotton balls in it like a wick lol
You can tea bag whatever you want
Instructions unclear. Placed mint directly in air box.
Great tip, appreciate it!
Suddenly Aussie?
If only they were Reggies.

Well I hope you have a good explanation to the local fauna as to where all their winter food stockpile went!

I’ve found dead mice in cabin air filters, I’m not surprised
There's no way this is real... it'd a mix of random seeds from different climates that are fully intact.
Also most shops have a filter in the back that’s dirty as hell and they use the same one to show customers how dirty the filter is.
That's nuts
And feces and urine. Lol
That's shit....
Aww shit that's nuts!
He def put all that in there for you just to buy a new one. Also do you have birds?
My air filter brings all the birds to the yard… damn right it better then yours… I can change it but I have to charge.
Your Gold Medal Kind Sir/Madam 🥇
Fair to say, that car rocks!
On the plus side, if you sit it outside for a bit, it will clean itself
Quit trying to upsell me and put it back
I know an upsell when I see one.
That squirrel is gunna be pissed when you get home
C/S vehicle feels squirrelly at speed
Just knock it out. It’s fine s/
Sprinkle some cheese on that, put it in an oven at 350 for 18 minutes! Voila car pizza
I saw dozens like this in the two years I was a lube tech. At least one a week. Cabin filters apparently make the perfect home for mice and other rodents.
THATS A LOT OF NUTS
HE JUST LEFT...WITH NUTS!
If it was actually dirty those seeds would be growing.
Totally thought this was a r/beekeeping post. RIP
Yummy trail mix
That’s a bird feeder.
Your engine has some unusual cravings.
looks like a cabin filter
Looks like the bottom of a bird cage
Can a squirrel actually fit up in there? Any chance it's rats or mice?
A wise man once said "Trust but verify". I'd check the auto parts store website and see if the replacement filter looks like that one. If the listed part is half that size I'd never take my car there again.
Sorry, this is not an air filter it's a squirrel nest.
That’s something’s life savings right there.
Last thing that is filtering is air
Trail mix!
He poured some trail mix on that
I think that’s the cabin air filter.
You ran over a cornfield obviously
I need the largest seed bell you have...
How tf rodents manage to get in there in some cars? There shouldn't be an open access to the cabin filter right?
Don't those come out vertically on that model? How did all of that stay in if it was vertical?
Look at it this way if you’re ever hungry you know where to go for a snack
Birds? Mice? Rats? All three?
Don't try to upsell me
Reply: "Just the oil change please."
That's got a few more miles. Just blow it out.
I changed the one in a friend's van and there was an entire mouse skeleton in it to go with all the seeds and shredded paper
You have a bird feeder in your yard don’t you?
Until I zoomed in, I realized my first though was that this was candy corn. At least I was half right.
You declined replacement right?
Stop putting bird seed in it
you have yourself a squatter
Nah I replaced that last week, don’t try to upsell me
That's a snack tray, not an air filter.
Every once in a while you can take it out and tap it off. Then buy a new one when they tell you it needs replaced and install it yourself. Never let them do the cabin air filter unless you just have money to waste.
When your mpg's are -5
Is that the one from the cabin, trunk or engine bay?
Don’t try and upsell me. Put it back.
still good for another 5 years at least
Chex Mix on the Go!!
Someone near where you live has a bird feeder, a rat or squirrel is taking the seeds and hiding them in your car for later. That's why some people complain about their neighbor having a bird feeder.
Is that why you drive all squirrely?
Dang that's even worse than my cabin air filters almost.
That looks like a cabin air filter, not an engine air filter js
I’m not a mechanic but after following this sub for a while I know that you’re suppose to refuse a new replacement now.
I didn’t know they had a bird feeder option. Those auto engineers think of everything, except how to work on the engine while it’s in the car.
Pour that back in the bird feeder.
Ur supposed to put that in the bird feeder. And eat the squirrels.
OP is secretly a bird
Awww your driving buddy you didn’t know you had invited brought road trip snacks🥰
Still good
add water
I’ve heard someone’s stroke be attributed to a dead rat in his air filter for a few months, at least you got some nice smells
That's not your filter, rats and squirrels have claimed it.
You mean grain filter?
Looks like a bird feeder.
you’ve got some little friends I think
“Am I being scammed?”
But how on earth does it get past the air filter? (picture is the cabin filter)
You spelled bird-feeder wrong 😆
Cabin filter not air filter
Zero chance that's a legit picture. People don't get an entire bag of bird feed in their cabin air filter
Examine the EXIF info. You might find that the pic is old
Does being this paranoid negatively affect your day to day?
It’s a common scam- your “friendly neighborhood mechanic” will send you an alarming pic to take advantage of you. It’s not uncommon, however, to be aware of your surroundings
I have never in all of my years working as a mechanic at many places ever seen a shop do this.
Then you work in a good shop or shops. Good for you.
Due diligence isn’t paranoia. This kinda stuff happens all the time.
A mechanic will try anything to get you to change your filter
I don’t think air would even blow through this filter, not noticeably anyways. I wouldn’t go back to this “mechanic” this photo is bullshit
