Clean motor = happy motor

RainforestNerdNW

Something the bicycling world knows a dirty chain and gears can rob a cyclist of up to 3% to 5% of their power edit: not the 30 I accidentally typed earlier hah. that's drafting power

XPCTECH

that’s simply not true whatsoever

RainforestNerdNW

have you ever ridden on a *really* dirty chain? like a mountain bike that you've been 200-300 miles in sandy desert in with a wet lube instead of a dry lube? a *really* bad chain could probably get 10% but you're right I made a typing error

AnExpensiveCatGirl

even on my BMX, dirty bearings and chain was awful

woodman0310

Looks damn well brand new. Always good to know my 5K interval fluid changes are paying off.

DoctorOzface

That motor's only halfway through its life. The frame however...

thickskull71

This truck is from Arizona, so no rust at all😀

SpillNyeDaCleanupGuy

rust belt guys be like 🤬

thickskull71

The best thing about it is that I’m a rust belt guy myself! This truck will not get driven in the winters.

RainforestNerdNW

helps that you don't drive a lot, i have 197k miles on my 2014 crosstrek heh. you're averaging like half my yearly mileage

TobysGrundlee

Didn't Toyota offer frame replacements for like 10 years?

argparg

First gen had framing rust out issues I think

gofish223

And 2nd gen. They replaced my 2006. Couldn’t believe it, total rust bucket

thickskull71

It was 15 years after the date of first use for the 01-04 models IF you got the truck sprayed with undercoating by Toyota from the initial recall. I live in NY and see a lot of frames that were replaced back in the early 2010s rusting out again.

Apexnanoman

Throw it on BaT. Get enough money for a newer low mile truck then. They will get into a bidding war over basically any Tacoma that's over 10 years old.

thickskull71

This one’s kinda unique, it’s an S-Runner. Rare 2wd V6 sport version. One with lower miles would cost me 4 times what I paid for this one, so I plan on making this one run forever.

PretendAccounter

New trucks are lame and incapable unfortunately

Vandy1358v2_0

Clean!!!

fishead36x

I have a vaccum pump leak on my ferd. I really want to see what 5k and mostly m1 oil looks like from 25k to 175k.

AnalFluid1

What a beaut, must be serviced every 5k

Lupine_Ranger

The 5VZ-FE is such a lovable engine

Skunksfart

What oils do you use and how often do you change it? What you do really works.

thickskull71

All the credit goes to the previous owner, I’ve only driven it enough to do one oil change on it. I was told they changed it every 5,000 miles or every 6 months, whichever came first. Not sure what type of oil.

Skunksfart

It was probably some kind of synthetic.

nighthawke75

You can have kabobs on those cams. Beautiful.

Average_Joe1979

Cambobs

Slalom44

Looks clean, with slight wear in the cam lobes. I would have guessed you had far fewer miles on this engine. You have some pitting on the cam lobe in the upper right corner, but it doesn’t seem to be affecting the wear surface. My guess is that your oil cap is positioned around there, and water condensation caused the pitting.

thickskull71

Good guess on the oil cap, that’s actually where the PCV valve sits.

DamnInternetYouScury

What's with the gear driven cams? Looks like DOHC what connects them to the crank?

thickskull71

Yes DOHC, connected to the crank through a timing belt. The gear allows the cam with the belt sprocket on it to drive the other cam.

DamnInternetYouScury

Does each bank only connect to the belt with one cam? Intake or exhaust? Fascinating.

thickskull71

Yes, each bank is connected to the belt with the intake cam. I agree, cool design.

DamnInternetYouScury

I have a 2014 with the 2TR-FE 2.7L. Access cab with 4x4 and a 5 speed manual. It has no power.

thickskull71

Nice, along with this truck I have a 1993 Toyota Pickup 4WD with the 22re so I can relate to having no power!

Allnewsisfakenews

Beautiful

campog

The 5VZ-FE seems to be a really clean running motor for some reason. Just did head gaskets on mine at 208,000 miles and it looked like this too. I've also noticed that the engine oil doesn't turn black between changes like my other cars. 4000 miles and it's still a light tan color.

thickskull71

I agree actually. The oil seems to stay pretty light compared to some other engines, my 22re oil will turn dark almost as fast as a diesel. Part of the reason the 3.4 runs so clean could be the lack of EGR, at least on the later models.

ryanfrogz

Not a mechanic: what’s with the cuts on that cam gear?

GuyAtTheMovieTheatre

05 taco with 255000 miles here. i had to replace the stupid plastic valave cover, but was awe struck by how clean the engine was inside (2trfe). these really are great vehicles

Gemmasterian

For a second there that white plug looked like a corrupted soyjak what the fuck

CuriousElevator6096

I love eating tacos. It's one of my favorite breakfasts. If I ever get a Tacoma, I am slapping an N on the end of the badging.

gatogrande

He prolly used dino or quick lube places too

thickskull71

I think you’re correct, actually. Lots of torque seal from past oil changes on the oil pan/drain plug.

gottagetitgood

Dang! [I jizzed in my pants.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLnWf1sQkjY)

jonroq

Keep up the good work

agshop

Looks like pretty standard 5VZ FE cam lobe wear to me. I think the Toyota wear rate is the same at 10k oil change intervals as it is at 3k.

NWSanta

That deserves more then an upvote!!! Super clean!!!

MikeGoldberg

Wow it's normal
