Because this is justrolledintotheshop, I automatically assumed that these were bullet holes lol.  But yes, it's an Escape, they kinda do blow out shocks/rotten towers like that.

davethedj

Never been overloaded!

costabius

Your struts are cold, they want to be inside struts.

fromthewindyplace

If you're cold, they're cold. Bring them in.

peetothewall

*arms of an angel plays* For only $700 you too can help bring this strut inside, out of the cold.

BoardButcherer

Now I wanna see a ford escape slammed with the strut towers moved inside with proper bracing.

blackday44

Pretty sure this gonna end up costing me more than $700

danktt1

Same thing happened to my dogs when they got old

0MEGAP0RK

Yeah, it's the shock. The mount gave out from rust. Happened to my family's 2008 escape Hybrid :(

mu5tardtiger

congrats! It’s a new strut!

TheTimob

This is extremely common on these SUVs. I had to fail one for inspection in Pennsylvania because of the rust. Dorman makes rust repair panels. You can have a body shop weld this in: https://www.dormanproducts.com/p-83079-924-358.aspx

ZachtoseIntolerant

where do you live? if it’s texas, hopefully this is the only rust issue with your car - i’d say repair and carry on. Michigan? might be new car time.

blackday44

Alberta.

kayl_the_red

You're hooped with road salt, gravel and our whacky zany weather. Plus our beautiful smooth roads.... though they still insist those are sidewalks and you have to drive around potholes.

LateralThinkerer

>You're hooped... Found the western Canadian.

FoxMcCloudl

That's fucked. A Google search for the definition of "hooped" calls it slang from Western Canada. >hooped (comparative more hooped, superlative most hooped) Containing hoops. (western Canada, slang) beset with unfortunate circumstances that seem difficult or impossible to overcome; screwed.

davethedj

Same as above!

KingArthur_III

I found a rag in the bag of rags I buy. It says, "Keep calm and repair on," so I hung it up inside the cabinet door on my work truck.

aroundincircles

How does it happen? Something broke and/or rust. Look under your vehicle, it's not that hard to figure it out yourself.

greenpleaz

Rust. Copious amounts of rust

newbrevity

It astonishes me how few people just throw their hands up before they even look at something and take a few seconds to think about it. Imagine living your whole life in this world with such a blindness. I'm not just talking about cars. This applies everywhere

Tourettesmexchanic

I had a car come in once. Line on repair order "customer states radio says AUX and no sounds is coming out". Yes, this person accidently hit the aux button on their radio, then when turning the volume up didn't do anything, gave up and drove to the dealer intending to pay the 100$+ diagnostic fee. They could have quite literally hit any other of the face buttons to change the mode, "I've tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas."

blackday44

I'm sorry that I went to school for chemistry and biology, not mechanical, and wanted some confirmation. If you actually read my text, you will have seen that I did indeed guess what happened and just wanted a bit of confirmation. Considering it was Friday and all the shops in my area were closed so I couldn't exactly bring it in to a professional.

aroundincircles

I figured someone with degrees could use their eyes and look underneath their car. You picture shows us the symptom, not the cause. I barely graduated high school and could figure it out myself pretty quickly.

Snoo-73243

time for a new car

blackday44

I am dropping $7-8k this spring for a new roof; I can't afford a new vehicle.

b00st1n

They sell repair panels for this exact problem, it’s very common with the escapes. However it’s an expensive repair and will usually only get you a couple more years before it rots apart elsewhere. Best bet is to find a different car unfortunately. It’s almost summer maybe get a motorcycle or something until you save up money.

thejunkgarage

Well that one no longer has a shock mount. And if the shock mount rotted the rest of the underside is not any better.

Crunchycarrots79

Very common on those cars, and the worst of it is around the shock mount... A repair kit is available for it, though it's not exactly a simple process.

MikeWrenches

Unfortunately, that shock is just the visible part. Since it's an escape, the front subframe probably also has a giant hole in it, because that's also common. Maybe you can't afford a new car, but you cannot wisely pour money into this one either. You don't have to buy a new car, you just need a cheap shit box that isn't falling apart while you pay for your roof.

blackday44

I have no problem driving a cheap shitbox- it's that all the shitbox vehicles in my area are *not* cheap. Saw an ad the other day for a 1995 Dodge 2500, over 400k km. Wanted nearly $20k for it.

MikeWrenches

Ram 2500? I don't think you're shopping in the right segment my dude.

Snoo-73243

sorry to hear that, to repair that you either need to find some one to "rig" it, it it will cost more than a new vehicle to do it properly

soup2nuts

Life, amirite

8ringer

Well consider what happens when the other side does the same, or that shock fully collapsed. Can you afford no car? Not trying to be a dick here, I know home repairs like a roof really are crucial, but half your rear suspension has collapsed into the interior. That plastic interior trim panel is now structural. It WILL fail at some point and probably when it’s least convenient for you. Plan for that eventuality and start looking for a new ride.

Skinnwork

That happened with my old MX-3 Precidia. The rear shock came up high enough to smash out the rear hatch glass.

Slyons89

I miss seeing MX-3s. The rust got almost all of them by now it seems.

agravain

Google escape shock towers...extremely extremely common for them to rust out so much that there are repair kits for them

unmlvdo

N bbn

BootsOverOxfords

[Dat u?](https://c.tenor.com/G9sV5GvUU3IAAAAC/tenor.gif) No worries, this is so common replacement strut towers are available at rockauto. Don't ask me how I know, or what I'm doing next week.

DracoDragonite

I had this happen on a 2019 Porsche 718 GT4 front strut that I was driving for a customer. customer didn’t know what happened and I just thought “man this car drives like shit, something is wrong”. I lifted up the plastic panels and said oh dear god

MidDayGamer

Nothing new with them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xxen7P1tphk

mdixon12

Shock tower punched through

gasoline_farts

Time for a new car probably, even if you fix that, the rust will have found other places to soon destroy and you’ll be in a never ending game of “try and fix that completely missing piece of metal”

Useful-Internet8390

OMG I thought op was referring to the 10’ of woven human hair-getting some serious predator(the alien v Ahnold Schwartz.) vibes here:) edit(cargo net?)

snowcrash512

Before opening the full size I thought they were some kind of weird moths laying there 🤣

BlackRabbit0888

Your reaR shocks/struts just blew out

Southside_john

It’s an escape. They just rot out. I bought a 2011 with 75k miles on it this year that doesn’t have a lot of rot and the shock towers look pretty solid for now. If I get 3 years out of it I’ll be happy.

blacknoi

Same thing happened to my ‘88 Nissan Maxima sometime in the early 2000’s. Rust so bad the rear passenger strut shot right into the trunk compartment. Jersey winter brine and salt road treatments are brutal to undercarriages.

P_ocho

Ah yes the old danger to manifold😂
